Councillors and their Doings.

Two Councillors, Mike Summers and Sharon Halford, along with the Falkland Islands Government representative in London will attend the Labour and Conservative Party Conferences in the near future. The Labour Party Conference will take place in Brighton between Monday 25 and Thursday 28 September and the Conservative Party Conference will be held in Bournemouth between Monday 2 and Thursday 5th October. Councillor Summers has already left the Islands to attend private business and take a holiday prior to the conferences. Councillor Halford is due to leave the Islands on Wednesday. Between the third and 4 October Councillor Summers will also attend the Overseas Territories Consultative Councillors Meetings.

CPA Small Countries Conference

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Small Countries Conference begins in Jersey on Monday and will be attended by Councillor Norma Edwards and Clerk of Councils, Claudette Anderson. Following that conference they will then attend the 46th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference, which will begin in London and reach its conclusion in Edinburgh on 29 September.

Squid 2000

The sixth International Cephalopod Trade conference begins next Tuesday in Madrid and will be attended by various members of the local fisheries community including the Director of Fisheries John Barton. Fortuna Director Stuart Wallace will also attend and speak at the conference. Highlights will include the review of world cephalopod resources, squid and octopus fisheries, world consumption and consumer trends, new players in the cephalopod market and the latest processing techniques and machinery.

CFL Valiant to Leave Port Today

The CFL Valiant, the second long-liner wholly owned by Consolidated Fisheries Ltd was moored at FIPASS yesterday, following her arrival in the Islands on Tuesday. The vessel, which is surprisingly spacious, carries a crew of forty men, mainly of Spanish nationality. How much Toothfish can be caught in one haul, Grant Munro, General Manager of CFL. She is due to begin fishing activities immediately.
