Councillor Assesses Fire Damage.

Councillor for the Environment, Sharon Halford, this morning accompanied Nick Huin of Falklands Conservation on a trip to assess the fire damage on South Jason Island. The pair left Stanley just after 9 O'clock this morning aboard a fishery patrol aircraft bound for the small Island to the North West of West Falkland. They arrived back in town late morning, having photographed the area. Falklands Conservation will today use those photographs in an attempt to estimate the general damage to the Island and the specific damage to the Black Browed Albatross and Rockhopper penguin colonies. The military press officer Captain Campbell said today that the fire was virtually out by 10pm yesterday although there are currently a couple of smouldering patches on the ground.

Traffic Accident ? Six People Involved

Six people in a vehicle, which left the Mount Pleasant to Stanley Road early yesterday evening sustained injuries ranging from minor cuts and bruises to more serious back and head injuries. At just after 6pm the Royal Falkland Islands Police were made aware of the accident by members of the Joint Services Police and Security Unit based at Mount Pleasant Airport. The incident occurred ten miles outside of MPA near the Fitzroy turnoff. The driver and three of the passengers were from the Met Office and the other two passengers from the Dumbarton Castle. One person was taken from the 110 landrover to the Medical Centre at MPA by a passer by, a further two casualties were conveyed by helicopter to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital in Stanley and the remainder were taken by ambulance to the MPA Medical Centre. Of the two people brought into Stanley one sustained cuts to the head and lower back injuries and the other an injury to the wrist. The others received minor injuries. The Royal Falkland Islands Police are conducting an investigation into the cause of the accident.

Good Week for Reindeer Team

The team currently on South Georgia rounding up reindeer fawns for transportation to the Falklands is reported to have had a good week last week. Pat Lurcock the Marine Officer on the Island said the team at Husvik has been busy building fences and corrals
