£250 Successfully Won for Local Charities

A total of £250 was donated to local charities last night during the Hits of the 60's programme on FIBS. Deputy Financial Controller, with the Falkland Islands Government, John Parker, who is to leave the Islands soon, donated the money to be used as five £50 prizes for local charities. The competition was to guess the mystery year. John provided the clues.Those were just three of the several clues he provided. The year was 1964 and of the numerous entrants the following five people were picked out of the hat to donate £50 each to the charity of their choice. Eileen Jaffray gave her winnings to the Stephen Jaffray Memorial Fund, Ken McKenzie's £50 will go to the Seaman's Mission, Peter Nightingale also chose to donate his money to the Stephen Jaffray Memorial Fund. The other winners Mark and Sue and Ian Goss have chosen to give theirs to the Cancer Support and Awareness Fund. Liz Elliot, who hosted the show, said that of all the calls received during the evening the above charities were the only ones nominated by the competition entrants.

Tourist trip with a difference has tea at Government House

Currently in the Falklands are a group of tourists with a difference. TCS Expeditions, a company based in Seattle is at present on a sponsored South American luxury jet programme. They arrived on a Boeing 757 on charter from Air 2000 yesterday. 80 passengers and 8 staff are on the trip, 10 staying in Darwin and 78 in Stanley. Their 21-day itinerary began in Miami onto Guatemala, Brazil and then the Falkland Islands. From here they'll fly to Chile, Ecuador and Peru before returning to Miami. Yesterday, they had a tour round Stanley and the museum, an excursion to Sparrow Cove to see the penguins and then tea at Government House in the afternoon. Sponsoring organisations for the trip include the Harvard Museum of Natural History, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and a number of American universities.
