Uruguayan president Jorge Batlle and a numerous delegation of businessmen are currently in Japan promoting trade and investments.

Although the volume of bilateral trade is insignificant in Japanese terms, Uruguay has lately managed to sell small volumes of rice and beef to Japan, emphasizing its disease free and organic condition.

Besides, Uruguay is interested in Japanese investments in forestry, railways and the container terminal in the Montevideo port plus communications.

Although the political situation has back staged the visit, the occasion is still considered very positive since it coincides with the 80th. anniversary of Uruguayan-Japanese diplomatic relations.

Uruguayan businessmen also indicated that the feedback from the Japanese private sector and official overseas cooperation agency has been encouraging.

The Uruguayan delegation also includes an orchestra that will play one of Japan's favourite music and dance, tango.
