Argentine Economy minister Roberto Lavagna said Argentina must advance aggressively with its agriculture claims in the coming months, once the WTO peace clause expires.

"In a few months time when the peace clause expires, (which limits demands among countries in farm issues), Argentina must be ready to appeal to these claim mechanisms if no advance is reached regarding developed countries farm policies", stressed Mr. Lavagna.

However Mr. Lavagna who was addressing a forum of food quality businessmen in Buenos Aires pointed out that Argentina must improve the presentation, labelling and quality of Argentine food produce.

"Our food industry must elaborate on the labelling, voluntary certification and all the information requested by international markets, and which consumer associations are demanding", warned Mr. Lavagna.

This means a more active participation in the WTO, particularly since Argentina has been one of the countries most accused of trade rules breaches.

"After the United States which dominates 20% of world trade, Argentina is the country that has faced most litigations for alleged trade rules violations, and we only represent 0,6% of world trade".

Mr. Lavagna finished saying that the current government will do its utmost to ensure that Argentina is no longer the granary of the world, "but a trade mark that reaches and is present in the aisles of international supermarkets. We must work to achieve a clear identification of Argentine quality in food line production".
