Full article

This is a stunning book of Falklands wildlife by the Award winning photographer/naturalist, and Life Member of Falklands Conservation, Kevin Schafer.

It is a vivid, colourful portrait of this windswept paradise captured over several extended stays to the Islands. It visual rather than scientific, and a celebration rather than a field or site by site guide (for this latter consider buying our Visitor's Guide to the Falkland Islands).

In the Introduction Kevin explains how his interest in the Falklands was aroused: ?During the early 1980's, I stumbled onto a well-worn copy of a book by American ornithologist Olin Sewall Pettingall, describing his research on seabirds in the South Atlantic. The book was ?Another Penguin Summer', and it was a revelation, filled with pictures of penguin-covered beaches and raw, wild scenery in a place I had never heard of: The Falkland Islands. As a young photographer, mad about both seabirds and islands, it looked like nothing short of paradise. Today, twenty years later, it still does.'

In the Foreword to the book Falklands Conservation's Becky Ingham states: ?The Falkland Islands are not an open-air zoo, with fences and signs. They retain the wide horizons and open vistas that attract the free of spirit and it is this essence that all with a love of nature and its bounties should strive to protect. I hope that after reading this book you will feel the same.'

Kevin Schafer is a professional natural history photographer and writer, whose work has appeared in all of the most respected science and nature magazines in the world include National Geographic, BBC Wildlife, Smithsonian, and GEO. He was the 1997 Recipient of the Gerald Durrell Award for photography of Endangered Species.
