History was made during Saturday's Falkland Islands Defence Force anniversary celebration marking one hundred and fifty years since the first volunteer force was formed here.

For the first time a female soldier was awarded a long service medal. Lance Corporal Denise McPhee and newly promoted husband Lieutenant Justin McPhee were also the first husband and wife team to receive long service medals together.

Given out for twelve or more years, other long service awards were made to Private Stuart Wallace, Corporal Russell Smith and newly promoted Corporal Gerard Ford.

After presenting the awards the Commander of British Forces described the five people as having given so much, so consistently and so well, calling it an outstanding achievement. And saying the community should be extremely proud of the force. He also thanked the FIDF for the training opportunities they provide for British Forces here, saying that the defence force is the most difficult enemy they ever face.

Other new promotions announced on the night include Captain Andy Brownlee, Colour Sergeant Paul Watson, Corporal Nigel Bishop and Corporals Owen Betts and Richard Morrison.(FIBS)
