Brazil Votes in Presidential Runoff Election

Brazilians go to the polls Sunday to cast ballots in a runoff presidential election with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expected to win another term in office.

Polls released Saturday show Mr. da Silva with at least 20 percent more votes than his opponent, former Sao Paulo governor Geraldo Alckmin.

Mr. da Silva promised in a Saturday campaign rally that he would make peace with the opposition after the election.

Alckmin predicted he would win an upset victory in the election. He said Brazilians understood the need for change and know it is the vote that changes things.

Mr. da Silva was the top vote-getter in the October 1 balloting, but fell short of the percentage needed to avoid a second round vote.
