Out of the region tourists dropped in Chile this summer

The 2009 summer season attracted 780.000 foreign tourists to Chile which represents an increase of 6% over the same period a year ago, according to the latest figures released by the country Tourism Service office.

The release shows an increase in the number of tourists from neighbouring countries but a drop in out of the region visitors to Chile. Argentina with 353.000 tourists was the largest contributor, having expanded 29% over the previous season. Peru and Bolivia visitors also increased to 54.900 and 59.500 with a 13.6% and 4.9% respective advance over the previous year. However the number of Brazilians was down to 44.000, a drop of 16.7%. Out of the region tourists who represent the bulk of revenue for the Chilean industry were down: US visitors totalled 50.900, a significant drop of 23.1%; from Canada came 13.400 which is 11.1% less and from Mexico the number was down 22.9% to 5.000. Europeans totalled 106.500, 11.4% less than in 2208. Germany was down 22.4% to 19.800; Spain, 11.500, down 12.3%; Britain 16.000, down 22%. The only country which supplied more visitors to Chile this season was France, 17.700, up 5.6%. As to revenue for the industry, it was estimated in 475 million US dollars which represents a drop of 2% from the 2008 season. However domestic tourism boomed with 6.185.000 travellers, up 7.3%. Hotel occupancy averaged 88% this summer season with Coquimbo, 80% (30% more Argentines); Valparaiso region, 86% and Araucaria region, almost 100%.
