Flights between Gibraltar and Spanish capital Madrid will be resumed later this month (April 30th) according to Andalus General Director Fernando Guerrero, who made the announcement this week at a presentation by the regional airline in the Campo Mancomunidad, in Algeciras.

Guerrero described the forthcoming commercial venture as “firm, serious and looking ahead to the future”, according to the Gibraltar Chronicle.

There will be two daily flights between the Spanish capital and Gibraltar commencing on April 30th at 8.20am, with the evening return flight from Madrid departing just after 8pm. The aircraft will be staying in Gibraltar overnight. Guerrero said there are also plans for three weekly flights to Barcelona and two weekly flights to Bilbao starting in late May or early June.

Following the presentation, Andalus officials held talks with Campo mayors to inform them in greater detail of the airline’s plans. The Ayuntamientos and other provincial entities have expressed their complete support for the resumption of Gibraltar-Spain air links

It was also reported that Gibraltar Chief Minister Peter Caruana is in Madrid for talks with Spain’s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. It is understood Mr Caruana will be raising the issue of the renewed Gibraltar-Madrid air link that was announced by Andalus airline.

Informed sources said the surprise meeting will also be a timely opportunity to review the agenda in advance of the next round of the Tripartite Forum for Dialogue, (UK, Spain and Gib) and discuss other preparatory details.

In a brief statement a Convent Place (government house) spokesman said: “Chief Minister Peter Caruana left for Madrid for discussions with Angel Losada, the Spanish Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. Mr Caruana is accompanied by the Chief Secretary Richard Garcia and will be back in Gibraltar Wednesday”.
