“Pink taxis” only for ladies and driven by ladies with GPS

As of this week the Mexican city of Puebla has a fleet of 35 “pink taxis” exclusive for women and driven by ladies, announced the local Communications and Transport Secretariat.

The brand new vehicles not only are they driven by specially trained women but also are equipped with a satellite GPS tracking system and a panic button connected to an Emergency and Immediate Displacement Unit.

“We want to end with that macho proverb which states that ‘a woman at the wheel is a constant threat’ and replace it with a more appealing and pleasant ‘lady at the wheel, permanent responsibility’” said Valentin Meneses, head of the Communications and Transport Secretariat.

The 35 units were baptized with feminine names such as Maria, Margarita, Blanca and Ely and will have the necessary technology so that clients can have the unit’s number, name of the driver, as well as its correct position and course.

“We chose to emphasize the feminine side since we believe it is a segment of residents that needs special care with units manufactured and equipped specifically for them”, added Meneses.

A year ago, the City of Mexico implemented a similar “pink” service for women in buses in the main lines of the Mexican capital.
