Chile’s December election: 100.000 registered to vote in Magallanes

Almost 100.000 residents are registered in Magallanes Region to vote on December 13th Chilean general elections which will decide on the country’s next president and regional members for the Lower House in Santiago.

The exact number is 99.847, (including 266 in Antarctica) which is 435 more than the previous election four years ago, and represents 1.21% of the total Chilean national voters’ registry.

At national level 8.285.186 Chilean are registered to decide who will succeed President Michelle Bachelet as head of the Executive.

In Magallanes region the majority of voters belong to Punta Arenas, 74.737 or 74.85%.

Other cities and villages are Puerto Natales with 13.175 registered; Porvenir, 4.943; Cabo de Hornos, 1.462; Torres del Payne, 1.290; Primavera, 1.214; San Gregorio, 770; Laguna Blanca, 763; Timaukel, 639; Río Verde, 588 and 266 in Antarctica.

The region will have 423 voting booths, 225 for men and 197 for women.

Friday November 13 begins the official campaigning period through the media and in open spaces but what is most attractive for candidates are the open television free minutes to be distributed among parties and hopefuls.

Although street ads and hangers are already displayed it is only from Friday that they can now be identified with the “Vote for:” and the name and number of the candidate’s list. All campaigning must cease 48 hours before voting day that is midnight Thursday December 10.

As of Friday also the different voting registries will begin drawing lots for the manning of the 423 booths, an estimated 4.200 people.
