Minister Pimentel sent a letter of complaint to his Argentine peer Minister Giorgi Minister Pimentel sent a letter of complaint to his Argentine peer Minister Giorgi

Brazil’s Commerce and Industry minister Fernando Pimentel called on the Argentine government to de-activate restrictions on Brazilian exports and revealed he had addressed a letter to his Argentine peer Debora Giorgi exposing restrictions on bilateral trade and demanding a reply this coming week end.

“I sent a letter to Minister Giorgi telling her about the situation and requesting she makes the necessary arrangements to comply with what was agreed at the beginning of the year”, said Pimentel quoted in the Brazilian press.

Pimentel was addressing an event with mayors and anticipated that “we are going to wait for a bit longer, next weekend, to see if there are any changes”. If not measures “will be considered. Nevertheless we must always give Argentina a “confidence credit, and we must have patience”.

The minister said that Brazil supports and defends its exporters and “we want Argentina to adopt procedures that match those which we apply on them”, but also admitting that Brazil has a strong surplus in bilateral trade with Argentina.

Pimentel said he had received complaints from Brazilian exporters indicating that Argentina is going beyond the maximum period of 60 days in approving the non automatic import licences and also imposes additional barriers to liberating merchandise from Customs. Apparently the list includes complaints involving 200 products.

The Brazilian Confederation of Industry, CNI and the Brazilian Foreign Trade Association, AEB, first filed a complaint on the issue with the Brazilian ministry.

Besides, “when Argentines limit the access to Brazilian products Argentina is opening a space for Chinese products”, pointed out Fabio Faria, AEB Vice-president.

Brazilian exports to Argentina in 2010 totalled a record 18.55 billion US dollars (up 44.9% compared to 2009) and imports reached 14.43 billion USD (up 28% over 2009)
In the first quarter of this year bilateral trade soared to 8.48 billion USD, with a 1.06 surplus for Brazil. Brazilian exports increased 34% and imports from Argentina, 19%.

no can do Mr. Fernando Pimentel as you might be well aware that Brazil has a trade surplus, and what was agreed on paper can not undermind the Argentine economy, lets not forget we are representing the poeple not the private industry. we are sorry but Argentina doesn't react good to bullying or pure pressure, come again when your needs are less inmediate that way we can all be in more agreeable terms. untill the trade surplus comes down we will have to take a chill pill, we have inflation to worry about wich is way more damaging then economic threats nade by anyone, the reality is Argentina can't control Brazil's supply and demand nor can we control labor unions, production or return on investments, but we can as well as Brazil draft laws to protect the local economy wich is what Brazil is attempting to do with this formal complain, a word of advise patience is a virtue.
