That only makes us believe that what they really want is to profit and deceive the government. These farmers should be heavily fined by the government as an example for other farmers who start having the same stupid idea. Logging in this country has always been done in an illegal way and people (Chico Mendes and others) have been murdered because of such activities. I don't stop cutting trees just because there is a law that stops me from doing so: I do so because I know that hurts the environment and consequently human beings will be affected by such stupidity , I do so because I know future generations won't have enough air to breath, I do so because I attended school and I learned that nothing that is a living organism will survive without trees. But the worst is to know that there are people such as city councilors, governors and other crook politicians helping these people. The farmers are not the only ones to be blamed.

FOR GOD'S SAKE, DILMA, GET A GRIP ON THINGS.

YOU RISK BECOMING THE PARIAH OF THE WORLD.

We ALL depend, one way or another, on the maintenence of these rainforests.

In nuclear terms, what Brasil is doing is equivalent to MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction).
Brasil is undertaking UAAD (Unilaterally Applied Assured Destruction).

    Humbleman
You may stop cutting the rainforest for those reasons.
The one important point is YOU HAVE NO PROPERTY THERE.
The pastoralists and farmers do not, and will not, follow your reasoning. They will only stop in 2 cases
1 There are no more trees to cut.
2 The penalty for cutting those trees is higher than the money they make from the cleared land.
The second will NEVER happen in Brasil

    Fildo Dildo,
let's risk stimulating you a little.
But just the bit that you think with.

Think about the difference between the rainforest and the sertao. What's the big difference? That's right, one is wet and the other is dry!

There's another difference, one has trees and the other has scrub & cactus.
So . . . . removing trees causes wet land to go dry.

Now, if all the trees in Brasil are removed, do you think Brasil gets wetter or drier?
    Is this 'a good thing'?

Now, if it happens to ALL the rain forests in the world (not a lot left) will the rains fall more or less?

Now, if human populations go up fast and rainfall goes down fast, will people get thirsty?
And do thirsty people die? I'll answer that one for you, Fido; yes they do.

If you have to pay the same for water as you do for oil, Fido, you may not die because you are in A Developed Country, but it may be the end of your world as you know it.

It would, indeed, be The End Of The World for millions, if not billions of people in the new sertao world.

    'Disgraceful hysterical exaggeration self-righteous screaming.'

Please add condescending . . . . sometimes the message needs simplifying for those practiced in the not-so-gentle ways of sarcasm.

I can tell the difference between sarcasm and theatrical desperation, Geoff, and your post number #2 fits the latter. And if that was indeed an attempt, a failed attempt, at sarcasm, you should refrain from others in the future. It's much more exhausting to read a person's message, specially when it expresses ideas opposed to ours, when they're put in that self-righteous, loud style.

Forgetit #12, you must read the thread more carefully:

    Desperation- yes.
Dilma is doing nothing to stop in its tracks this acceleration of logging .
I have this first-hand & verbatim, last week, from a Chief of Police in west Para who is supposed to halt the logging, stop the money flow and arrest the perpetrators and the killers - activities being hamstrung by politics & the empresas madeireiras, police underfunding & understaffing, and resource diversion.

    Sarcasm was Dildo's mode.

My condescending simplification for Dildo @ #7 remains the substantive and unrefuted posting - both by him and by you.

    The loggers are the main problem - and the killers;
the police are culpable by their refusal to get involved.

    @Geoff

Spare me from anecdotes that I won't believe. Do you one for each discussion you may engage in?

On the Amazon issue, I find the following article of interest. I hope your wife will translate you.

    Forgetit,
My condescending simplification for Dildo @ #7 is my substantive posting - it is unrefuted both by him and by you.

As for 'anecdotes' - when you reach my age you will have many references to personal experience available to you and many interesting people you will have met (eg #13).

If you globalise your career and your experiences you should never need to 'extend' truths to embelish anecdotes; I have never found any such need.

“I find your lack of faith disturbing.” (Vadar, Episode IV).
“May the force be with you”.
