Steady as she goes for another few years MLAs until the oil starts to flow properly. Then improve our infrastructure. Stanley's sea front, cruise ship arrival area, Dockyard, Ross Rd, deep sea port and MPA Road. These would all get my vote as priorities for capital expenditure. We have to invest in projects that will continue to realise outside income after the oil has all gone in 20/ 30 years.

Some of the money will need to be spent building up self protection against envious, avaricious, deluded and increasingly desperate neighbours. The Islands' Government can only rely on UK up to a point. A truly capable maritime arm of the FIDF is needed. Say three corvettes to operate as OPVs. I just happen to know were three such vessels can be sourced and can name a man ideally placed to take this idea forward (i.e. me). Pirates of the South Atlantic indeed.!

@5 Well, since you want to engage me on ground of my own choosing....
It seems to have ended badly for one of Victor's paymasters this week. The Special Court for Sierra Leone has found Charles Taylor guilty of illegally interfering in the affairs of that country (subject to appeal we look forward to welcoming him to a UK prison). This should be a warning to leading Argentinians to take care that their actions don't lead, eventually, to something that they could be held to account for in an International Court of Law.

It's all relative. For the Falklands it represents about 32% of our operating budget. That operating budget is about 10% of our cash reserves.

What percentage of the Argentine operating budget is your surplus for the year? What is your national debt running at? The Falklands has no national debt except the one we owe the UK for protecting us from your country's aggression.

    Think #13 (sober again? ;-) Doveoverdover #19:

Many people in the UK still question Blair's role in initiating the legalised invasion of Iraq 'in order to bring Saddam to justice'.

The lack of rigour and the severe circumscription of the remit cast the Hutton Inquiry in a bad light,
and I entertain serious doubt about the cause of death of Kelly, the 'suicide' who had his computer hard-disk files erased remotely, the death weapon wiped clean of prints, and a serious lack of blood for one who was deemed to have knifed his wrist artery..... This has all the trappings of the black arts of the security services attempting to limit the damage to the Government of the day and the politicians involved.

Millions of ordinary citizens marched on the streets trying to stop their government taking the country to war.
Millions of others said 'My country, right or wrong' and had faith in the Prime Minister's statement that Iraq was ready to unleash weapons of mass destruction on the UK at 45 minutes notice.

There is an embarrassing consensus of hindsight that the British Prime Minister, through pressure on his Attorney General to change his stance, gave the UN and thereby the US the authority to enter Iraq.

The P.M. Blair has remained 'teflon-coated' throughout, and even moved subsequently to the position of Middle East Peace Envoy!
.... and became a very, very rich man.

@4 Rather depends on what you call “proportionate”, does it not? Nobody would deny the right of the Islanders to provide for their own defence BUT it depends on what they can reasonably do. Available statistics indicate that one-third of the individuals on the Islands are British service personnel. Take them away and half the Islands' population will need to be in a constant state of armed readiness. A River-class patrol vessel similar to HMS Clyde costs approximatelt £5 million per year to run. You can expect any OPV (even second-hand) to cost around £2.5 million. There might well be additional costs as the vessels would certainly need to be armed. As the defence of the Falkland Islands is a matter for the United Kingdom, someone might want to ask the MoD how it feels about a BOT navy with armed vessels. There might well be costs there as I would expect the MoD and the RN to insist that crews of Falklands navy vessels received the same level of training as RN crews. Finally, there is the small matter of air defence. As an example, a Type 45 air-defence destroyer costs around £6.5 billion. After all, you wouldn't want argie air force aircraft to get too close. A Eurofighter Typhoon, with no munitions, costs around £65 million. How many would you like?

This is the trouble with comments such as yours. The tone suggests that you think me “warlike”. I, on the other hand, have a very clear understanding of what it takes to be suitably “defencelike”. Let's add it up. Leaving aside the destroyer, and assuming you don't pay your troops, you need over £70 million just for a start. Add in the cost of munitions, real and practice, and your entire budget starts to look like a spit in the ocean.

Britain, except for people like El B****** Kirchnerist, have no problem with defending you. Just remember that it comes at a cost. The most important of which could be the lives of British service personnel. So wind your neck in and quit trying to be so smug.

Your estimates of military requirements seldomly demonstrate such level-headedness and considered measure. That is why I often judge them to be beyond the rediculous. I have nothing but respect for the armed forces as an organisation but it is made up of individuals who, individually, have to earn that respect. I was in the armed forces and I know that it is has all sorts; some good, some not so good.

I am out now but I still have lots of colleagues who are still in. Some of my closest friends are now colonels, brigadiers and there's even the odd general amongst them. I also have friends who gave it away in the last 10 years after being WO1s for many years. Some of my closest friends have seen some dreadful action. Action I was fortunate enough to only be on the edge of. I've talked firsthand with contempories of actions in 7 different countries around the world and I've spoken countless times over the years to much older veterans from both world wars.

Never have I spoken to anyone with anything like the attitude you often display on here. I think you are full of shit and a disgrace to your country.

    Argentina has....

The Malvinas BOT represent, at best, a minus of 150,000,000 £ a year for the British taxpayer just in “Thiefence” expenditure….

Those 150,000,000£ of “Thiefense” expenditure represent TWICE your whole “Operational Budget”

And that very low amount is reached by creative accounting as, for example….:
Not accounting for the cost of salaries….
Not accounting for the cost of weapons….
Not accounting for the cost of maintenance…

    In short…

Not accounting for next to nothing.

@46 Is that why they are all in jail now?

    Operation Condor:
(Spanish: Operación Cóndor, also known as Plan Cóndor, Portuguese: Operação Condor), was a campaign of political repression and terror involving assassination and intelligence operations officially implemented in 1975 by the right-wing dictatorships of the Southern Cone of South America. The program aimed to eradicate alleged socialist and communist influence and ideas and to control active or potential opposition movements against the participating governments. Due to its clandestine nature, the precise number of deaths directly attributable to Operation Condor is highly disputed. It is estimated that a minimum of 60,000 deaths can be attributed to Condor, possibly more. Condor's key members were the governments in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia and Brazil. The United States provided support, with Ecuador and Peru joining later in more peripheral roles

    36. Except the USA investments are as much as a 1/3 of Arg's gdp. Do you want us to pull out the car factories and stop shipping you medication? Fine with me, we can move the factories to Brazil or Uruguay and let RGS die because they don't have the smarts or innovation to make drugs or medical devices or ____ fill it in.
How do we start this process?

Dear Joe Bloggs, thanks mate, cheers.

    Yes, Argentina is a sad joke thanks to the clowns governing it...roll on 1930's, 1940's, 1950's, 1970's, 1982, 1989, 2001-12, etc.

In contrast,Chile, thanks to its general good governance over the last 22 years has done a lot to give a better image of South America and the potential it can offer. I know student protests have broken out there in the last year, as expectations rise, but their government is trying to deal with same in a mature manner as noted in Mercopress.

Other countries in South and Central America should look at Chile as a role model, certainly as to general good governance and steer clear of the Argentina, Bolivian and Venezuelan examples.

Maturity, and commonsense, a couple words that seem to be lacking amongst Camporista posters here.....they may feel they are serving their political cause well, but as for the good of their country...god help the many decent people that live there.

Guz, keep posting....you silly fool....who are you trying to convince, the silly fools that attended CFK's latest rally. Any open-minded person who follows developments in South America looks at Argentina's current governance with bewilderment. Self-destruction on a grand scale.

CFK is styling herself as a new Evita....and a third-rate one at that. I look forward to seeing the musical and the eventual movie....although I think the Edith Piaf musical I saw in late 2009 in Buenos Aires was more to my liking.

Yes, Chilean many students, encouraged by some small local Communist (probably admirers of CFK) elements, are demonstrating....but some sensible reform is being put in place....as to politics, the Concertatcion (Centre and centre left) and the right wing parties (UDI and Renovacion Nacional) have both pursued a similar economic model. If there is a danger in Chile at all, or any other recent reasonably governed South American country, like Peru, Colombia or Brazil, it is if the leftist elements try to copy the Argentinian role model in some way in the future....in Chile's case, I can't see that happening, because Chileans have seen the benefits of open trade. They are major exporters to the world and are more deserving of G20 place then Argentina....it is only because they dont want to a major diplomatic incident with Argentina, that they dont talk more strongly about replacing that nation at G20. Countries like Australia and New Zealand would welcome them with open arms as their government and business people operate in a professional manner and respect the concept of a contract. For instance, our national airline, the respected Qantas (never crashed) has given up on Argentina and now flies to Santiago instead.

Guz, keep waffling, you good old-fashioned leftist idealogue. How is Lenin doing? You must live in some time warp!

Any serious foreign investor in South America knows from the formguide (i.e The Economist, etc) and practical experience what are the well or reasonably governed countries, and what are the more hopeless cases. Chile has rated well as a foreign investment location for the last 20 plus years....has that been the case with Argentina, Venezuela, Bolivia,Ecuador, Uruguay etc? I don't think so!!!....Uruguay, which I have visited too, is currently led by another leftist popularist, who has been criticised recently by a former Uruguayan president for his silly subservience to Argentina...Uruguay has the prospect of a free trade agreement with USA and good relations with EU and Britain...while I understand the diplomatic issues, Uruguay needs to play a smart game and put its economic interests first by not going down the Argentinian road of isolationism.

Guzz, you are backward looking and anti-western in your views, driven by ignorance and envy and your left-wing idealogy.

Many Western nations have a good mix of free enterprise and government services.....look at Australia, NZ, Canada, Britain, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France, Holland, Belguim, the Scandinavian countries, etc (USA is less so, but they carry a huge military burden, much to the benefit of the rest of the world/yes, they have made mistakes in Latin America in the past, but they have moved on and today are trying to pursue good relations there where possible as can be seen in Chile, Peru and Colombia and Brazil). South American countries have many good examples to follow, including Chile....Uruguay would be very silly to copy Argentina's trade policies for example....they were hurt badly by them recently...so much for soladarity.

The key for South Americans is to understand that good living standards come with good governance and societies based around generally good values, including good productive attitudes towards work.

It is no surprise that Chileans are doing well because their attitudes to work are very good and the people generally have good values, influence no doubt by the fact that it is still quite a religious country. Chileans like to see themselves as the British of South America in terms of their work attitudes and professionalism.

Anyway, viva the Falklands and hope to see this sad Argentinian story end soon...it's so silly and promises only deliver more poverty there.

“I have served my country for over 40 years and was officially recognised as a commissioned officer.”

Sounds strange to someone that's served. Were you given a commission as an officer or not? By the way, I'm not being snobbish about NCO's whom many I admire and count as friends.

    @47 Conquerer.

40 years as a Commissioned Officer? In what, the Salvation Army?

I smell a Walter Mitty. In fact it was on another thread on this website that you said you had never served due to your age and infirmity (a bad back I believe you said). You, the grief whore that you are, cried about how, in 1982, you couldn't serve and had to 'watch' our brave boys being killed, not realising that there was no satellite TV back then to report on the action live.

You are a troll and a liar. No Officer has such distain for non-commissioned ranks. No Officer in their right mind would upset a Warrant Officer. And to clinch it all, the majority of Officers have to retire at 55yrs of age, so did you join the Army at 15? If you did, back the old days, you certainly wouldn't have been commissioned.

Trying to lie to big yourself up is despicable, and an insult to all those who have served. Not only that you constantly harp on about killing people, which no real soldier, serving or retired would EVER do, and this fact insults the memory of those who died to protect the people of the UK, Commonwealth and the Falklands.

You should dwell on the core standards and values of the British Army, which those of us currently serve and have served in the past live by:

Respect for Others - even your enemies
Courage - both physical and moral
    Integrity
    Selfless Commitment
    Loyalty
    Discipline

If you truly want to emulate those that serve try living by these values and standards first.

@55 Joe Bloggs, Conquerer is a Walt of the worst kind, but he's also a bit dim 'cos he can't keep his lies straight.

    @126 - Joe Bloggs.

As an ex-soldier myself it really grips my s@*t when some troll disparages the reputation of the Armed Forces by talking such utter bollocks. Conquerer is like Galteri was, willing to fight to the last drop of someone else's blood, as long as they don't have to get their own hands dirty.

Conquerer talks like killing people is exciting and something to be proud of, but he has never had to look down the sight on his rifle at an approaching man and make a decision: is he an innocent civilian, or is he a suicide bomber? If you make the wrong choice someone dies, someone's father, son, brother or husband or God forbid some of your muckers. Killing is not something that is done lightly, and every soldier is responsible for his own actions and has to answer for them to higher authority. Conquerer doesn't understand it's not like the movies you don't automatically know who the bad guys are and what their intentions are.

However, back on thread, I hope the Falklands continues with it prosperous future. No doubt when the black gold starts flowing the islands may get some prospectors trying to settle down there, I hope their immigration standards are high. ;-)

    UPDATED
Argentina's 'plans for farewell intercourse law so widows can have sex with DEAD husbands' branded a 'complete nonsense'
    By DAILY MAIL REPORTER
    PUBLISHED: 28 April 2012

Alleged proposals to allow Argentine widows to legally have sex with their dead husbands for up to six months after their death have been branded a 'complete nonsense'.
The controversial new 'farewell intercourse' law was claimed, in Argentine media, to be part of a raft of measures being introduced by the Peronist-dominated parliament.
Controversial: The 'farewell intercourse' law is 'a complete nonsense', and was confirmed after re-interviewing sources

Sources inside the Argentinian Embassy in London have said the claims were 'completely false', and 'could never imagine it happening'.
The source said the proposal, if it even existed, had not reached the congress- although it was also admitted it could be the work of an extremist politician. Although not officially rebutted, the claims that someone inside Argentina could introduce such a law provoked widespread skepticism.

Let me guess. The widows would've been flown to their dead husbands on Tupolev aircraft and the scheme was to be operated by the wives of all the 1000s of Chinese oil workers who are coming over to take control of YPF.

President Pinochet and his civilian advisers, after an elaborate and lengthy process of deliberation and decision making in 1973–1975, in which various alternative courses of action were considered, put in place the radically new set of market-oriented structures and policies that have been and remain the foundations of Chile’s subsequent three decades of economic and social development.

The Pinochet era is not black or white and whilst it is much easier to take an extreme, uncompromising position, it really is not that simple.

If you visit Chile you very quickly understand that the country is polarised politically and split fairly evenly 50/50 over that period in history. I have interviewed many people and listened to their personal stories and accounts for that period,. In one day I visited the home where Pinochet was held under house arrest and Allende's tomb, where I listen to people close to both speak about them as the humans they knew.

Whilst I cannot see Chile ever returning to military rule, under Pinochet the economy certainly started on the road to make Chile the most stable in SoAm and will make it the first developed country there. And, remember, it was pressure from the people, as their standard of living improved, to return to democracy that led Pinochet to hold elections that had him removed from power.

It would be very simple to hold up Allende as a socialist hero fighting the big bad capitalist enemy but his government model was flawed and unworkable with disasterous consequences for the ordinary working Chilean. Likewise, Pinochet's regime was oppressive, dangerous and lethal to many ordinary Chileans. Both leaders utterly believed they were acting in the best interests of their people.

What happened under the military governments in South America was horrific. But you can argue that left-wing communist governments are equally lethal for anyone daring to challenge or question the government.

Not unconnected, on my last visit to Argentina there was a ground-swell of opinion that they were better off under military rule. I can't see it happening but it shows that people are not at all happy with the current situation there.

I was a teenager living during the UP and life was untenable. The truck drivers, the taxi drivers, the farm workers and especially the women waiting in line outside supermarkets with ration books were all fed up. My father used to bring back from business trips abroad, toilet paper compressed in his luggage because of the shortages here. You may find that humorous, but try living without toilet paper for two weeks and using newspaper instead. You might wish for a military overthrow as well.

Thank you. I'm supposedly recovering. We'll see. That's why I have so much time to terrorize Argentineans with Chinese high speed trains and Russian super wide body airliners.
By the way, one of my very good Argentinean friends lost his sister in the Ezeiza massacre. I had casually dated her when she vacationed with her brother in La Serena and was devastated when I learned of her death. Killing innocent people is terribly wrong. You had to be here to understand what went on, there is no simple analysis.

The good old anecdote of the “missing” toilet paper !!!

We used to ride loads over the Cordillera for the friends.

It was as valuable as jeans in the Soviet Union during the 60’s.

But the fact is that it was never a real shortage of toilet paper in Chile during the UP government.
It was just stolen, hidden and stored somewhere.

Do you remember a couple of days after the Coup?
Miraculously, there was toilet paper all over the Chile
    And cheap as ……………..Well……….Toilet paper.

    Magic!

    PS:
All this “toilet paper talk” made me “Think” about a very tangible cultural difference between our two great sister Nations.

You, Chilenos, do not have the slightest idea what a “Bidet” is for.
Maybe this particular piece of “Basic Roman Hygienic Culture” could have saved Allende’s life.

    Allende……………………Salvador…………..

A man that entered our history, standing for ALL his people……..; PENNYLESS!

Compare with Pinocho that went “Sin Pena Ni Gloria” as a common thief, with 25million stolen Dollars in his bank account.

    Compañero Salvador…………

@177 When your attitude has matured you will understand it is possible to view situations without having to take sides. Only then can you really analise and evaluate.

You are a very angry young man who flip-flops on just about any subject just to stay angry. Your knowledge is superficial, conspiracy theories infantile and your prejudice astounding. Instead of festering in your bitterness, jealousy and frustration, why not arm yourself with an education and go and do something to change your life? Or better still, make a useful contribution to society. You can make changes but not by being an armchair racist.

One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.”

A question for Guzz, British Kirchnerist, Think et al.

Wouldnt you prefer Argentina had a socialist democracy like in Scandanavian countries rather than focusing on populist politics and the cult of personality of Argentine politics which relies on stirring up peoples emotions by creating -them and us- scenarios rather than simply applying good sound policies that tangibly benefit the majority of the nation for the longer term?

Peronism requires a poor, ill educated, dependent class to sustain itself. It simply couldnt exist without that.

Social democracies of Scandanavia exist because the largest class of voters - the middle class - vote for them. They are far more egalitarian and 'wealthier' (not just economically but the options open to them) than the populist/nationalist models of Argentina etc

Dont mention the Scandanavian suicide rates. They are similar the world over in extreme northern southern latitudes probably due to the lack of light and the need to stay indoors!

Anyway the choice seems like a no brainer to me.

I think with Argentina-s huge size and wealth of resources it could achieve far more wealth and stabilty than most countries in the world could dream of. It is blessed and yet it has consistently struggled thanks to nationalist politics over the last 60 years. If it hasnt worked up to now and in other countries too why would it work now?

Also its entirely contradictory that certain politicians should have and seek so much wealth whilst claiming to be fighting for the common man.
Surely they should be concentrating on running the country - as politicians -and not making lucrative business deals to say the least .

Argentina requires stable, relatively honest politics with long term goals rather like Germany and Japan had after the 2nd world war. A much fairer, more honest, responsible society with non emotive politics is entirely possible.

I think a good politician should be like a good referee in sports match. Iow hardly noticed because the game itself is allowed to flow and the centre of attention is the game not the referee.

At the end of the day being a politician SHOULD be about doing a job -forming and applying policies. An employee of the state. Not frequently partaking in self promotion projects.

Let the policies do the talking not the rhetoric

Oh son, son, son. The Falkland Islanders will not be touching anything that is Argentinian. You can be sure of that. They are just improving their own quality of life the legal and responsible way. It's only those whiny a*sed , cry baby Argentinians who are kicking up a fuss about it and they are only doing that because they are in the habit of stealing everything not nailed down and laying claim to things that are not really theirs.

The South Atlantic would be a peaceful place if for that constant whining and crying sound coming from Patagonia but I think that the only reason for this is the fact that someone has stood up to them, Humiliated them ( as aposed to them doing it to themselves ) and now they are sulking about it. Just like the bully in the playground, who gets shamed infront of the class. Oh dear, boo hoo. Move on.

If there is oil out there in the Falklands and they do raise the money to pump it out the sea then GREAT, I hope that their economy can grow and flourish and may it improve ALL of their lives. It can stand as a beacon to the Argentinians to show what can be achieved when you don't have some crackpot, bi-polar, thieving, lunatic in charge

One is interested in your replies, they seem to contradict each other .
    Allow me
206, you say=I have no issues with the islanders, although I do think argentines claim is fair. That said, the islanders are the rightful inhabitants

    Then
211=let the Argentineans decide their own future. The country is theirs to do what they please.
    …………………………………………..
On one hand you think Argentina has a claim to the islands, but think they have a right to decide their own future,
And thus Argentina has a right to decide her future,

Then should you not agree, that if the islanders have a right to decide their own future,
    And they decided
    1, to remain British,
2, to have nothing to do with Argentina
3, to remain British until otherwise stated.
    ……………………………………………………………………….
This then solves the whole problem from you point of view then,
And thus Argentina claim is irrelevant,
    Is it not.
And thus CFK and her government should add ear and respect the islanders wishes, and thus denounce any and all claims, and leave them alone .

That if you are the rightful inhabitants I.E the owners, you have no right to the ownership and cannot do as they please.

But on the other hand, as Argentinean are NOT the rightful inhabitants, they can say who owns Argentina,
Is this not backward ideology in reverse.
So==as most inhabitants of South America are NOT the rightful inhabitants, they CAN decide who owns the land,
But as most Europeans and Africans, are the rightful inhabitants, they CANNOT say who owns them

    @221 Guzz,
    You do sound confused.
A little while back, you stated that it was right for the Falklands to drill for oil but not right for them to extract it as the oil(seams? strata?caverns even?)lay under Argentine territory & we would thus be taking their oil.
    Undoubtedly!
But what would you have us do?
    1) stop drilling?
    why?
-to please Argentina. not very likely after the way they have been behaving.
    2) cut them in on a share?
    why?
-we had an agreement with them that would have covered situations like that, but they tore it up because we refused to discuss sovereignty.
They made that decision to withdraw, not us.
    3) anyway, it cuts both ways.
lf they drill in their territory & we don't, they will be extracting OUR oil.
What do you say to that Herr Guzz?

    /////////
other wise your entry would be rightful inhabitants means they have the right to inhabit, preccisely what the word indicates...
    thus inhabit and not own.
theirfore argentinians have a right to inhabit, but not own, thus you do not own argentina .
    .............................

Yankeeboy: I followed your advice and did an analysis at http://www.teamtechnology.co.uk/mmdi/questionnaire/ of the past 35 recent posts of the character who calls himself “Buzz.

No surprises: The conclusion is he’s a single male, most likely between 18 and 25 years of age, underemployed, most likely still living with is mother, perhaps attended one or two years of trade school before dropping out. An extremely self-centered narcissist, who craves attention and acknowledgement from others. He has trouble empathizing with superiors or understanding their positions. He’s apparently extremely sensitive to rejection - implied, perceived or real from others and may react with displays of aggression, threats or temper tantrums when denied. He claims being a “marine engineer” that commutes between Denmark and Uruguay, but the conclusion is its nothing more than another manifestation of his delusions of grandeur.

The Argentina claim fair! What rot. A claim based on proximity! Hilarious. Britain is 21 miles from France, so I suppose France has a legit claim on Britain!
A claim based on inherited Spanish claims. What a joke. A corrupt pope's gift of half the new world to Spain and the other half to Portugal even before the islands had been discovered.
A claim based on the supposed eviction of a Spanish colony (bought from French). A blatant lie. A totally disproved historical non-event yet taught in Argentine schools to keep the lie alive.

Good luck to the islanders. Hope the money floods in to your coffers!

He exhibits a non-completed mediocre education with English as his primary language.

    Justicialist Party May Day Celebrated

Buenos Aires, May 1 (Buenos Aires Herald) -- The dear respected Maximo Fernández made a congratulatory speech at the Justicialist Party parade celebrating the brave workers of Argentina on the May Day holiday. His speech has enjoyed great public response as it was vibrant with superb intelligence and iron will and gives clear-cut answers to questions arising in building a thriving nation.
In particular, his statement that “Our party and the government of the Justicialist Party will join hands with anyone who sincerely wishes the reunification of the country and peace and prosperity of the nation, and make responsible and persevering efforts to realize the historic cause of national reunification with our brothers held captive in the Malvinas Islands” instills in the minds of all Argentinians the conviction of sure victory in national reunification with them.
Maximo Fernández was evidently making a reminder of the tireless work of his mother, Dear Leader, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, who has called for national unity before anything else and led all patriotic-minded Argentinians to the efforts for national reunification with the Islas Malvinas.
This statement also made people recall the bold and fearless leadership, of his father, the late Great Leader President Néstor Kirchner as well who declared that Argentina would join hands under the banner of great national unity with government authorities or ruling and opposition party officials, politicians and Argentine workers, if they value the common interests of the nation and want national reunification with the illegally held rightful territory of Argentina.
The idea of on great national unity and their lofty personalities and patriotism of Presidents Cristina Fernández and the great leader President Néstor Kirchner, have served as a source of strength enabling all Argentinians to turn out in the drive for national unity and reunification.

Know that Argentina will NOT attack the Malvinas, HMS or no HMS, army or no army, that is just not going to happen. Attack 82 was the work of a fascist regime that in order to try score points with the people, sent 100 of young men into their death (amazingly, they didn't send their own sons). We never bought it, true it was a few pro-juntas that celebrated the insanity, but know that the masses never ever agreed with that. Watch the movie “La guerra de las Malvinas” and you'll see things from the common Argentinian point of view.

The invasion was supported close to 100% by the Argentine people.

Some people say, that Argentina will never invade the Falklands ever again,
The one thing I love about humans is
    1, how trusting they are
    2, how quickly they forget
3, how evil under the guise of peace can work wonders
4, how the masses will believe anything they are told
5, how corrupt politicians can literally get away with treason, and call it progress

8, and how its all for your own good, belive us, we know what we are doing,
Trust us,, its for your own good, as you know nothing,
    We politicians know everything.
    ///////////////////////////////////////////////////
Don’t you just love those words?
    Well I think differently
I believe the argentine government on the surface is portraying peace in our time,
But behind your backs is progressively trying every trick and skull drudgery under the sun, to take them,
Remember we have to defend them 24 hours a day every day,
They have only to strike once and maintain a bridge head, until the world calls for a ceasefire to talk,
    ,,,,,,,,,,,
Just a point in question .

Idiocy doesn't discriminate, it attacks all nations, and during the military dictature, there where people that supported the junta, the very same ones that cheered in the Plaza de Mayo. Those people are not representative for the Argentinians, no matter how much you would like them to be.
Ask any Argentinian you meet if they supported the junta invading the Malvinas (and yes, for us Uruguayans they are the Malvinas). Please watch the movie about the war, it tells you the history from common argentinians point of view. We will never invade the islands. Period. And I say we, not as uruguayan or argentinian, but as latin american.

Frondizi, Alfonsin, and all the other politicians, both from the right and the left supported the Junta in the invasion. It would be pretty fair to say that the same 62% who support Kretina's attacks on the Islanders supported the Junta's invasion in 1982.

    'Invading'
............ do you mean something like Hitler's Anschluss or Napoleon's pan-European wars? ..... you know, 'active' invasion.
............ or do you mean the gradual population of territory populated by existing 'tribes'? .... you know, like North and South America.
........... or perhaps the re-taking of mainland Europe at D Day, or the re-taking of TFI in 1982? .... you know, responsive invasion.

I think that Britain was involved in invasions:
    in Roman times,
    in 1066, and
in the Crusades - including the Childrens' Crusade (losing side),

and in the time of Henry V (winning occasional forays into France, like at Agincourt; losing others).

Whilst you are right that 'invasion seems to be the ultimate solution'
especially where 'active invasion' - like Genghis or Hitler - is accompanied by genocides,
you claim too much bellicosity for the British. The (ephemeral) British Empire was largely built on trade rather than the bullet.

You are wrong, Guzz about the Argentine people.
Nearly 100% supported the invasion of the Falklands.
They would do it again tomorrow if they could.
lf they are as innocent as you say, why don't they remove the offending paragraphs from their constitution & stop teaching lies to their school children?
And l wouldn't “like them to be” anything as you put it.
Perhaps l would like them to be good neighbours but l think its gone too far for that.
Just thought that you might like to know, but the term “malvinas” is highly insulting for us.
They have never been & never will be, malvinas.
Even Argentine atlases refered to them as “lslas Falklands” until they got this crazy idea that the lslands are theirs.
Guzz, your guarantees of non-invasion are worthless.
You may not want to invade but others do. especially now that there maybe lots & lots of oil!
Finally, l didn't agree with the invasion of lraq either.

The ONLY reason your proud nation of murderers of infants invaded Iraq, was to get their hands on the oil, and now you are going to do the same to the islanders. English newspapers are talking about “Biggest oil findings since the 70's”... Of course it has to do with the Malvinas, just as it has to do with Northern Ireland, as there is a red line through all their actions. The steal lives, resources and chunk of countries...
If you ARE an islander, and there IS oil anough for you to prosper as a nation (note I say nation, not puppets), then I'm truly happy for all of you, as long as you don't start pumping oil from the Argentine basins (pretty unavoidable, hence the need of cooperation). No, Latin America is made up of countries that speak a Romance language. It does not include English speaking countries, or Dutch speaking Suriname. As South American as you maybe, but not as Latin American as you.

And Scottish colonisation of Northern Ireland was no different to Spanish colonisation of what is now northern Argentina and Uruguay, or Argentine colonisation of what is now southern Argentina (La Pampa, Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego) territories which were never Spanish, but which were invaded, conquered and annexed by Argentina (and Chile) after independence.

281 - UK torture ...evidence ???? facts of Northern Island are a bid wobbly do some research.
Regards Oil wasnt there an agreement between falklands and Argentina that RG's walked out on??? why because the falklands are a huge popularist distraction from RG economic collapse, a useful tool to unite the people, like the jews where for the nazi's.

All was quiet on the falklands issue until a couple of years ago when they found oil, then the RG's started slavering after it. We can bat around digs at each others country, none of this changes the facts.
1/ You illegally invaded another country.
2/ We regained the islands and you LOST

Get over it, humiliated yes you may be, but with time the pain will ease.

One has to pick things delicately as confusion often follows,
Remember that all truth, in part is either false or created,
But to condemn one side, one must either condemn both or support the evil of the side,
    Allow me .
[the elected government, they DID kill women and children in Iraq,]
    Not strictly true,
Some innocent people, always get killed, only if the British government directed the military to kill civilians, could they be condemned,
Thus the removal of foreign troops would bring peace, yet even today, terrorists or murderers, routinely kill and murder women children, babies and men, =and where are the do gooders, that condemned the allies, but are mysterious, very quiet,
Did they really care about the innocent, or was it again purely anti military, and xxck the innocent .

[they did invade for oil, didn't they]
Actually ,no, for that may have been a reason in part, if it was purley to get the oil, then we today would have billions of tons of oil, , but we don’t, not one drop was stolen or removed to the UK, [fact]

[if you bring Ireland into it]
Then Argentina and its people, would be making the biggest mistake in their history to keep what is not wanted, unless you guys are willing to except the deaths and injuries .of hundreds of argentine military, trying to keep a province, that does not want you .
She is only Latin as wildly as we are considered European,
But we are as British as they are, and you are as Argentina, as brazil is Brazilian ,
    Is this not true .
    Finnit.

    .

    @281Guzz,
We are not Latin Americans although some of us, including me, have Latin blood.
We are from the South Atlantic.

Isolde, you Islanders are surely no Latinamericans, as this is rather a cultural/ethnic definition rather than geographical (There also exist latinamericans within and born in the US, for example)

But I do believe according to rational definition, that you guys and girls are southamericans (geographically). And I do not think that this is any problem at all for your own definition as people. It might even enforce your own position and self confidence, if you would admit it and stand for your rights. As long as you see yourself distant from the continent (which you aren't, geographically), you will offer the Argentine mob surface to attack you and define you as intruder.

Actually the Falklands are positioned in the south Atlantic full stop.
What people regard them, is their opinion, but as they consider themselves Falklanders and British, that is the end of any debate,
    ,,,,,,,,,,
As we all may or may not say that the Caribbean and the west Indies are middle Americans,
We wonder how many of them actual consider them selves centre American,
As a matter of fact, does this mean that Canadians are in fact Americans, or referred to as north Americans,
But I can assure you, that if you ask any Canadian or British, or most of the worlds people, they would be considered and in fact are, Canadians.
    ///////
    Interesting wasn’t it .

Briton, you seem somehow confused. Point is, the world is defined by continents and their respective allocated zones, and the example you have given (Caribean) has a very straight definition: The Caribean is geographically defined as North America. There is no room for any other interpretation. “Central America” is not a continent, but a subregion of North America. You can verify that in every encyclopedia. Canada is also located within North America. The Falkland Islands (and many other islands like Galapagos, Chiloe, Tierra de Fuego etc...) are allocated to South America. Like it or not, it's a ...FACT.
Being in the South Atlantic does not impede this, as it does not impede the UK to be defined as european country, even it's Islands are in the North Atlantic. Greenland is a similar case, a huge Island... dependency from Denmark, but still it is in North America.

And again, I am not putting in doubt the sovereignity of the islands at all, it's totally clear to me they are dependent territory of the UK (Same as Guyana is to the French). I totally respect this.
