It's all the illegal escapers of taxes that where in Uruguay last week, that now are buying over-priced dollars in a futile effort to hold on to “their” money :)

You know its bad when your own countrymen are trying to take money out of your own currency to save it.

That is a certain level of desperation only seen usually in economies going into economic melt down.

Let's see what CFKC does about this now she is back at work after her 'sickie'. Honestly, the woman is a medical miracle recovering from influenza in just 48 hours! Or maybe she was lying and being over-dramatic about the sniffles?

Increased AFIP raids are not going to control this problem. It just make s teh gov't look weak and desperate. At some price and or point there will be public panic. Once it sets in they will not be able to control the devaluation.
It is just a matter of time now...

Quick question (if anyone can help). My brother-in-law has asked me to buy a computer in the UK and take it over to Argentina for him (it costs 10,000 pesos in Argentina and 4000 in the UK). Are there any restrictions on bringing personal items like this and, if there are, who would be the best person to bring it in, me (on my UK passport) or my wife (on her Argentinean passport)?

@4 Elaine, sounds less and less like influenza and more and more like a bad case of “man flu”.

    6. As a foreigner visiting Arg you can bring in 1 laptop and 1 cell phone. The aduana is pretty disorganized so it is hit or miss on whether you will have to give them the declaration you fill out with the serial numbers of the electronics. If you do there is a very very slight chance they will want to see the items leave with you back to the UK.
As an Argentinian she would probably have to pay taxes when she brought in the items.

@6 I have completed the Argentine customs form numerous times and I remember having to list mobile phone details but not my laptop. I have never been questioned, or had my bags searched and, in fact, most of the time the customs officers are not bothered to take the customs form at all. This is probably because they are not very interested in foreigners. I have taken I-pods as gifts but never a computer.

It might be a little more tricky if your Argentine wife took it in but as she is not resident there, I doubt it. If you had one lappy each, I can't imagine anyone questioning you about that.

I think I may have mentioned here before that the last time I left BsAs in March, people with Argentine passports were having to list every single item of value in their hand luggage before leaving the country. It was a nightmare of long queues with just one man at the desk. Everyone else just went through customs as usual. I was a new system so they may have organised it a bit better now.

CFK demanded that no one speak about the barriers to exchange.

Shhh if no one talks about about it maybe if will delay the panic.....

I suggest you carry the “contraband”, as yankeeboy says you can enter the country with a laptop with no problem, and going out they won't have the slightest idea who you are.
Have a good time here. Are you coming to Patagonia?

A tip, try the Schroeder wines, especially their malbec, from Añelo, Neuquén. They are excellent. I believe there are some really good wines even further south in Chubut, but I'm not sure whose they are. Think would probably know.

You're right; the Schroeder wines are very good. I did a tour around a number of the Neuquén bodegas 18 months ago. However, it's the altitude in Mendoza which really makes the Malbec grape flourish and, unfortunately, there isn't the thermal amplitude in the south to give the wine the same intensity. The epitome of this is in Salta where some of the vineyards are up at 2000m and you get temperatures of c. 40 degrees during the day and sub-zero at night making the wines almost purple in hue and with a stunningly complex structure of tannins. They aren't quite to everyone’s taste but, if you can, buy a bottle of San Pedro de Yacochuya. ABV is sometimes up near the 16% mark, quite a stunning wine but needs a good couple of hours to breathe first...

anyone in the UK looking for the best Argentinean wine outlet, I found this the other day. Being a bit of a wino I've been looking around at these guys are by far the best...

Argentines who voted for CFK will get what they deserve: a major devaluation and poverty. Meanwhile the politically connected Peronists will get richer and richer. After the devaluation the Peronists will rush in to buy Argentine assets on the cheap with their dollars stashed offshore

    20. Another hint, make sure the laptop looks like you have been using it in case they search your bag. The Aduana are hit and miss so you never know when one of them needs some $ to buy lunch.

Of course the sky will not fall on you; you may not be able to get into the sky. Now CFK and friends are keeping the Argentina people from flying out of the country until they are checked for dollars.

I love that you use 1 day of a price decrease to show you are onto a new trend.
You should invest in the stock market you would be a gazillionaire by now instead of getting poorer EVERYDAY.

People cant save money in Arg. There is no way. In pesos you loose, and if you go to a supermarket, with 100 $ you cant buy nothing. Obviously prices in Arg arent those that publishes the Indec, and neither of inflation, that is everyday more high.
