“In between the two planned developments, thousands of people live in grim poverty on the riverbanks in shacks that get swamped whenever the river water kicks up.”

I think that says it all... No matter what artificial gloss they put on things, Argentina will always be a decayed, shambolic wreck, much like Turkeyneck herself.

You're not seeing the opportunity here. “Slum tourism” is the latest big thing. Wealthy tourists are paying big bucks to visit the world's best know slums.

No, that's New York or Los Angeles, I'm afraid.

Coudn't be London because in tha place there is no development at all, it's all decayed for about 60 years now, and no future since Europe in general is on its last legs.

Cfk doesn't miss a trick. The Nazis used the medium of film to indoctrinate the population of Germany. She will use it in an attempt to bend the public to her corrupt mode of thinking with especial reference to the Falkland islands Propaganda always fail! She wants public and private money to fund her future political games. With public funds she will “ influence ” film content ! Private money is well advised to stay clear.

I was talking in terms of physical attributes, but thanks for the opening. The fact you can't name an argie actress does not speak poorly of argie actresses or our cinema, it speaks poorly of YOU.

You Brits (and Americans), live your lives without eyes and a nose. You live your whole lives isolated within your monolingual bubble, without ever knowning foreign culture, music, cinema... The amusing thing is you think that is something to be proud of. I pity you.

It's not something to be proud of - it is something of no relevance to us either way. The reason you know who Mila Kunis is is because English language cinema is dominant throughout the world. We have no need to seek out Argentine audiovisual products because we produce enough to satisfy our needs. It would seem that Argentine tastes are much the same when your government needs to stipulate in law the amount of Argentine content that must be shown.

As there are nearly 200 nations in the world I assume you must know actors and actresses from all of them? Otherwise you're simply whining that yours aren't talented enough to attain worldwide fame.

    Aug 31st, 2012 - 06:54 am - Link - Report abuse 0
  • Truth_Telling_Troll

English language cinena is dominant solely due to circumstance, not any inherent talent, believe me. I know because unlike you have watched tv in 6 languages.

Again, you think you satisfy your needs. Your “audovisual products” have a predictable and BORING pattern. You should watch a German crime tv film, a French series, a Brazilian soap. You would discover immediately how different somethings are in terms of idiosyncracies in filming and story telling. It is striking. For example, in German TV (perhaps faithful to their origins), a lot of movies or shows revolve around small segments with a moral. French tv on the other hand deals a lot with very personal issues brought out in public in a way that normally does not happen in real life. Brazilian soaps are extremely focused on the struggle between wealth vs happiness.

Argentines tastes are such that we have more Spanish-music content than any other country, and very few US and UK bands make it big, and most are already quite veteran. On most argentine tv shows it is 80% argentine music.

I know actors and actress from 6 language groups, but I'm not a huge movie person. I don't know many Hollywood actors that to everyone else are staple names.

    What circumstances are those then?

    Aug 31st, 2012 - 07:20 am - Link - Report abuse 0
  • Truth_Telling_Troll

The same circumstances that make Italian cooking or fashion ubiquitous in every corner of the world, or French cosmetics and design universally sought, or German machinery products popular by default... there is a saying in Spanish that does not exist in English “Hazte la fama y echate a dormir”.

It means something like “put a decently crappy product together and the best advertising ever behind it, and go to sleep”.

Italian cooking, french perfumes, german machinery, English movies... people are simply used to them as part of their lives. They could be completely horrible products but people have been conditioned to them. That's what it is really... peoople are conservative and rarely go outside their box.

Hmm - I doubt you've ever owned a German car or you'd understand why everyone wants to buy them. I needed no advert to convince me to buy my S8.

Dunno about Italian cooking though - pasta with everything. OK if you like pasta I suppose. I'd always choose a French restaurant above an Italian one.

  • Truth_Telling_Troll

Point is... if someone tells you lets do Lebanese cooking, you will be much more hesitating than if they said Italian. If you say to a girl to buy a Bhutanese perfume, she may disaprove. People have been conditioned by bias to think certain things from certain places are inherently superior, without actually on a rare occassion questioning if that is indeed fact.

16: I appreciate your point about countries being associated with various products, most people are marketing slaves, that's a shame and a fact. But, to presume that people from the UK (one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse countries on the planet) are culturally ignorant is an ill founded statement. We live in all countries in all parts of the world, I don't even live in the UK, speak 4 languages, I might be an exception to the rule but am still evidence that your opinions are misguided.

    @18

Compared to most other cultures, English-speaking cultures have very little exposure to non-English culture. The reason I find it ignorant is because many in your society think they really have no reason to search beyond that. That is sad (for them), like I said it is like a blindman who never is even told he is the only one blind, in other words he is made believe everyone else is of his condition (there was a famous case in Argentina in the 1920s, of a man that only at age 24 learned that his “eyes” had a purpose and that they worked on other people, he was then studied by doctors to explore his reactions to the revelation).

That's many English speakers, they BELIEVE the outside have nothing to offer, but that does not speak poorly of the outside world, but it speaks pitifully of them.

English culture movies tend to focus on the personal struggles of characters, they typically present them in situations where they fight or lie in confrontation to that which they eventually embrace (a woman, a culture, a career, etc). That is not boring per say, it becomes boring once you are exposed to the other forms I explained above.

Now I have diversity of “audovisual” cultures that most of you do not, and life is far richer for me.

  • Truth_Telling_Troll

It is completely accurate, it is not boring, it only becomes boring when you watch other countries output. And those become boring if you had to watch them exclusively.

German tv is about smal moral tales.
French tv is about public airing of private struggles.
English/US tv is about fighting personal preconceptions.
Brazilian tv is about the balance of money vs spirit

facts... they can be easily stereotyped. Of course, within those overarching themes an infinite number of permutations can happen, but such themese are always near the surface.

@19 I think your view is about 50 years out of date. Most Brits have plenty of exposure to non English speaking cultures (for example, I am in Sweden all this week) but the main issue is that Northern European countries are perfectly comfortable with English culture and are usually absolutely fluent in English - consequently they think you are a bit stupid if you try and really learn their language (rather than a polite few words) - unless you live there.

It's a different story in Southern Europe but you get out what you put in and some Brits are happy to try - others less so

    1) Use the pension funds of Argentines to construct a vanity project which will benifit very few Argentines especially those in the provinces,
    2) If it is a success claim I am a genius
    3) If it fails shout Islas Malvinas very loudly so that when the population of Aregtnine hits retirement age they wont have a penny to live on, then have to give them money by priting money and increasing inflation.

As usual your argument lack basic logic. Why would a cinema have contracts to play movies than no one likes, it wouldnt make them any money and if it was being paid in advance and it didnt bring in enought money to justify the contract it would be cancelled.

At best it shows that the cinemas of Argentina can not surive on home grown movies alone and so uses American cinema to fill the large void, would it be good if a larger Argentine film indistry developed, yes. Should it happen by gambling everyones pensions, absoutly not.

pasting a link to one bad movie does not proove anything.

The fact that the record for largest every openining weekends in Argentina is held by two US movies does.
In Argentina, it scored the largest opening day of all time ($961,000)[87] and it broke the opening-weekend record, earning $3,533,330 ($3,534,968 with previews), a record previously held by On Stranger Tides ($3,133,009). It has accumulated $10,955,123, ranking 7th on the all-time chart, marking the franchise's highest-grossing film and Warner Bros' first film that earned more than $10 million

But they do, because they get money out of the distribution, not the sales you dork!! The ticket sales make or break the studio itself, not the movie theaters!!

American movies are not good, period. They are just played because of contracts and because they produce a large volume of film. But they are a country of 300 million, so there is nothing remarkable about that. It is like saying Argentina has better movies than Uruguay because it makes 100 times more movies.

It's a MONOLOPY. I have already explained why already. The movie theaters have pre-signed CONTRACTS with the studios, well-before films are even released. THat means the movie theaters GET THEIR MONEY REGARDLESS OF HOW THE FILMS DO!

American films have a monolopoly on these contracts, which muscle out all competition. Have you ever wondered why a completely awful film keeps playing when the theater is empty? Now you know... they have their money already under contract, the ones who lose if no people watch are the studios. So a good film can subsidize a studio's bad film, because they can take some money out of a profitable film to cover the losses of a bad one.

How can you quantify what is good or bad in a monolopy? Thankfuly I watch French, Italian, German, English, Chinese, Brazilian, and other films, there is some good stuff there that never gets shown because of those contracts.

Does anyone here have any understanding of basic economics and how the real world works?

You have no argument. OF course there is a split, but the split covers the theaters much better. And that is convenient even for the studios, because they need that distribution to be assured, so they are willing to take on more risk of burdening flops (more and more frequently in American film btw).

You really are going to tell me 90% of American film is ANY good on a script, originality, and talent of cast level? Its pathetic how bad it is. And now a lot of us in the younger generation are no longer watching US films. Only if they are good...

You have just moved the goal posts now you want us to look at wether Argentines would rather spend the money on x or y, for a start prrove it by providng me with some actual evidence.

Where as before the argument from you and SussieUS was that the Argentines hate American films. The Box office takings i sent you before and will send you again show that Argentines are spending money watching films which you say they dont like.

    http://boxofficemojo.com/intl/argentina/yearly/

You want econmics lets do that then lets take the top 10 films from 2011 which where all US produced films. In 2011 the top 10 films brought in ticket sales in Argentina of appriximatly $89M USD or using a rate of 4.5 pesos to the doller $400 M ARS. Assuming a ticket price of 29pesos (http://boxofficemojo.com/intl/argentina/yearly/ then that is 13.7 million tickets sold to the top 10 films (reambering they are all US) which is equivelent to 34% of the population.

Your comparison argument over choice only works if we assume people pay to see films they dont like. The comparison with Mcdonalds is entierly comptable no one forces you to eat Mcdonalds no one forces you to go to the cinema.

San Juan is a... hmmm... backwater. Nice, clean enough city, but a backwater. Can't compare to Mendoza where there is much more to do, and there's a movieplex on every street corner.

I smell a success story in the making here! I live and work in California and I have met many Argentine artists of all genres working in the entertainment business over the years. There are many here now and many others have moved on to bigger and better things here, Argentina, and around the world. I found each of them to be very pleasant and very talented. Their common dream seems to be to return to their homeland and express their talents to the world from there. There is a great amount of movie making, commercial, theater, and music production on the increasing in Argentina. I am amazed to see how many US commercials are filmed in Buenos Aires and Argentine countryside. Having spent much time in Argentina while I was in the US Navy, I can easily recognize many of the beautiful neighborhoods and the charm of the Argentine countryside when I see them on the screen. Haaa! It’s funny to see how many people still think they are looking at Europe. Cristina has certainly identified an area of great potential, and income generation for her people. She obviously hit the nail on the head again. I am sure that Argentina will reap much success and good fortunes with this move. GOOD LUCK AND SEE YOU AT THE OSCARS!

Oh please, don't tell that Americans that something like 5% of the commercials they see on their tv are filmed in Argentina and the people are not even Americans... they are so sick of outsourcing the lot.

And another 5% are argie corporations behind the add concept.

Hello there TripleT. Actually the % that you quote is for the entire world but it is much higher. Unfortunately I do not know what the exact % is. The good part of this initiative is that Argies will be producing their own movies, with their own themes and exporting them for the world.

“Compared to most other cultures, English-speaking cultures have very little exposure to non-English culture. ”

...and when they do, they meet people like you?

The city of Buenos Aires has had a movie support business for over a year. CFK is only interested in starting another fight with the city, trying to produce movies which show how her ex-spouse created Argentina, and what vile people against the K government are trying to do to the country. Of course “special” movies would be made to show all the school children how Argentina really did not exist before she came along.

Hows about this for their first ever great war movie “Victory in the Malvinas” or “How we fucked up big time.” Starring CFK as the loving nurse, wiping the brow of the wound warrior Tinman.

What a great visionary initiative from the ever brilliant Cristina! Sure beats Macri's “similarly ambitious” (sic) “plans for a neighbouring waterfront property once known as Sports City, where his government plans a 1 billion dollars development of shopping centres, restaurants, office space and upscale housing for 15,000 people”. So Cristina brings growth by making movies for the masses while Macri's big idea is luxury flats! I know which one I'd resent if I was one of the poor people living between them, and which one I'd welcome. And its Cristina not Macri who stands for hope for raising them out of poverty altogether

#10 “Well she's got acting experience:

Star Wars” - Padme AND Leia =)

As for the “contest” to find an actress to play Cristina,I find it hard to think of any beautiful enough, but whoever played Nefertiti on Dr Who tonight sure did a good job for another iconic queen =)

    #62 Great comment =)
