The war on drugs launched by outgoing Mexican President Felipe Calderón six years ago has been a ‘failure’ concluded a public opinion poll on public security and law and order, done by the Mexico United against Crime non government organization.

In the last five years the number of crimes committed and which are considered of great public opinion impact such as kidnapping, homicide, extortion and robbery have increased significantly.

As a consequence of the war on drugs which meant involving the Mexican armed forces in the fight, a first count of 47.515 homicides has been linked to the conflict, points out the conclusions of the survey.

However the number is far inferior to the 95.000 homicides estimated by the Mexican Statistics and Geography Institute, since 2006 when president Calderón set out his strategy at the start of his six year mandate in 2006.

The results of the Citizens’ Security Perception opinion poll indicates that the failure of the war strategy in the fight against organized crime needs considerable modifications, once the incoming president elect Enrique Peña Nieto taks office next December first.

At the beginning of the war on drugs in the early years of President Calderón’s mandate, the favourable opinions stood at 47%, the slid to 31%, while those that considered the initiative a failure climbed from 23% to 46% in the six years.

I agree its imperative to change strategy, but a poll of oppinion isnt really a serious tool to decide the curse of this types of problems IMO.

The majority of the country got info from different mediums and social media who basicaly exploited this “war” in a very superficial manner for shock value or political gain while at the same time ignoring the underlying complexity of the situation as well as its victims, not everyone of these were reporters mind you, which made me very angry gto be honest, especialy when those came from foreing mediums. The really affected parts of the country have a completely different pov from those who didnt or have yet to be affected, in the bad, worse and little good things that came out of this situation.

Now, with just reason, the most affected parts and even those unaffected are calling to keep violence controled, I would agree this wasnt a win situation but a neccesary one it was IMO or at least you can argue it. Now I hope this pushes Mexico,Colombia, central america and the rest of Latam more than before in working together, I have always thought waiting for the US to give a different answer than the status quo it itself imposed on its ppl so many years ago, and then on latam is a chimera, the answer really is in getting back the security for the ppl by the means of this same ppl while strangling the cartels in their finances and commodities IMO.

One good thing that I loved to see was how when in a situation like this, ppl from Italy and Colombia were the ones to offer the best kind of advice that got very far away than the simplistic platitudes and presumptions that came from various others sources, and advices that were actually useful as well.
