P&O cruise line suspends stops in Argentina, confirms calls in the Falklands

Full article 179 comments

British cruise line operator P&O has scrapped stops in Argentina because of continuing tensions with the country over the Falkland Islands. Two of its vessels will no longer dock at three Argentine port destinations on around-the-world cruises. The decision was taken because there was no guarantee they will be able to dock. @1 I Don't Think aka The Turnip In Chief

So your little rant against ships calling in the Falklands (there are STILL no Malvinas you Old Git) and predicting the utter isolation of the islands has blown up in your face.

I TOLD YOU THAT THE SHITHOLE OF USHUAIA WOULD SUFFER THE FALLOUT.

And BTW a note from the shithole itself:

“Don’t have a crap in Argentina”: (sung to the tune of ‘Don’t cry for me Argentina)
    “SEWER SYSTEM IN USHUAIA”
    Pumping station still not functioning.
Almost a year since the technical report on the status of the sewer system of Ushuaia was presented by the Advisory Commission on Coastal Management Plan, the Government and Municipality has still not defined who will be responsible for the repair and maintenance.” Source Ushuaia Noticias.

Argentina had a 10% drop in tourism last year, before this development. I can understand it when the place barely runs and the number of blockades has increased threefold. Tourist do not want to be caught up in all the violence, crime and turmoil. They want to enjoy their vacation and spend their hard-earned money where it is appreciated.

It is simple, short-term thinking by the Argentine government (clearly behind this violence). Like laughing about the financial situation in the UK in four decades. It is why Argentina constantly falls flat on its' face; no one can look beyond where their next meal in coming from. Development of a country takes long-term planning and the ability to see it through, however hard it may be. Ask Chile; they did it.

So the cruise company's are removing Argentina from their itinerarys. This is clear evidence that people would prefer the Falklands over Argentina as these cruise companies would be driven by the market demand of their clients.

So the Argie threats that their actions would place the Falklands under economic hardship are toothless.

The Argie threats to catch all the fish before they enter FI waters have also proven to be toothless.

The May 2012 court action against the Falkland Island oil exploration promised by the Argie government has still not happened and we are closer to May 2013!

I'm sure Think thought he would get in first and set the tone for this forum. But it was quite a spectacular backfire. I'd be embarrassed if my government was destroying an export industry like this.

Cruise line tourists are the gold standard. You don't have to build hotel infrastructure, just provide services. It is the easiest export industry to make money from. And they have extremely high disposable incomes.

And Argentina is quickly destroying it. This will rip tens of millions of dollars out of the economy. In pesos that will soon be approaching the hundred million mark.

And for what. Some principles. Doubtful. Why can't the Argentines on here see that Argentina is heading for economic collapse again? All the economic figures point to it, but the increased Falklands rhetoric is a dead giveaway.

No use talking about 11% growth when it has collapsed to 0.6%.

No use talking about government social spending when real inflation is 25%

No use talking about lower government debt when hardly anyone is working. (According to MECON Argentina has 16 million people working-compare that to Australia's 11.5 million).

So go ahead Think revel in this news. Because you might think it is old news but I guarantee it will be repeated again in the future.

Your name reminds me of a saying:

Yawns! Good time to build an Argentine shipping industry, without competition building ships can be as productive as shooting fish in a barrel. What ever happened with the industrious people in Argentina? Does the IMF and WTO have to build everything for them, last time I checked everyone was in a big strike while CFK was working over time for libertad. Maybe now Argentine can start building their own ships, I hear there is great fishing in Malvinas Argentina, Tourism is over rated.

Apologies, but it will unfortunately taint my view of BA. Having green stinking crap spayed all over you, is not my idea of a good time. Argentina desperately needs foreign currency . The authorities should be all over this disgraceful behavior. As I came home tonight, a youngish guy was going the rubbish, people had left out for collection. My sense is the economy is in a lot more trouble than the authorities are admitting. Very few places will take credit cards, so clearly a run on the banks is considered a possibility

The deadbeats on here say they are happy that the locals who rely on the cruise ships in Argentina are losing their income. All in the name of the greater national cause. A national cause that will never get them anywhere. A national cause that will only make the UK more determined to protect us. A national cause that might have a tiny chance of saving CFK's scrawny neck.

Think old man, as for your beloved commander, everyone knows he is a fake and either a figment of your own mind or one of your old cronies from the halcyon days when Bennies did what they were told, had a sense of humour and were grateful for the bread crumbs Argentina and the UK threw us. It is quite clear that Britain will entertain no nonsense from la Kretina but it is quite clear that these are defensive measures and not not be interpreted as “militarisation” of the South Atlantic. There is no intention implied that Argentina will be invaded by Britain - Latin America must realise that these measures are provoked by the nonsensical rhetoric of the Argentine President and her Foreign Minister which encourages rogue elements of Argentine society, such as Quebracho, to take violent actions against British presence in their country and which could lead to some “unfriendly” gesture towards the British territory of the Falkland Islands.

Please explain how the wheels of justice will affect the FI oil explorers as I have yet to find a court with the required jurisdiction that your government will present to. You and I know that such a case with any validity will never be presented by your gvt and you are simply deflecting this fact with such statements rticulated above.

In terms of my results I am more than happy to state these as I did for my online tax return (obviously paper loss/gain do not go on this as one hasn't disposed of any assests in that case).

RKH. Cash gain over last 2 yrs is 50k (split between me and the other Dr Beef as I transfer 50% of my holdings to make us of her CGT allowance).

Risk = 15k spent on recent purchases from £1.5 to £1.6. To derisk initial capital at £2.50 (in no rush).

FOGL - paper loss of 7K with inital holding intact after de-risking twice and purchases at recent lows. Holding at 20K worth of shares.

BOR - Paper loss of 5k 75% derisked with initial holding intact and loss down from low of 8k (smallest holding due to risk with no farm in spreaing the risk).

This is my equity position and doesn't include my spread bet activity which is not liable for tax as one does not hold an asset and it is not the my sole source of income.

    @105 - Think

I don't see any pictures of these mythical islands you call 'Malvinas', just British territory call the Falkland Islands. You can tell it's British due to the big UNION flag flying on them.

Hey, I wonder how your dear leader will act when the RN send a fleet of ships to 'train' in the South Atlantic?

A Helicoptor/Assault carrier - with lots of Apache attack helicoptors on board.
A couple of destroyers, one T45 at least.
    A submarine.
    Lots of Royal Marines.

In the meantime, 16 Air Assault Bde (the Para's) will taken this opportunity to 'train' on the Falklands.

    1. Do you think she'll blow a gasket?

    2. Do you think she'll do something monumentally stupid, like sending young Argentine men to die for her hubris?

    3. Do you think she'll cry to the UN, the OAS, Unasur, Mercosur, and everyone else that she thinks might listen, only to find that they're not interested in her inane rants?

I think she'll go for option 1 followed by option 3.

But at the end of the day, the Falklands will remain British. They'll be British tomorrow, and the day after, and for years to come, until the people of the Falklands decide that they want to become an independent nation in their own right.

But the point is, that Argentina's colonial expansionist ambitions will never come to fruition, and given the fact that you Argentines are your own worst enemy, you'll never be in a position to truly threaten the Falklands and their people.

The Argentine government and their La Campora zombies are bullies. And every one knows that bullies are cowards. La Campora are very brave when attacking unarmed civilian tourists and trying to intimidate them (just like your military junta were - see the parallels?), but when it comes to actually putting their lives on the line, they'll disappear like smoke.

The daily mail made no mistake at all! They know perfectly well that Timmerman used a picture, in a UK newspaper, of a vanguard class submarine capable of launching nuclear warheads. When he went to the UN and wrongly claimed that Britain had sent a nuclear capable submarine to the south Atlantic, a nuclear weapons free zone. When in fact we had sent a nuclear powered submarine that was not a vanguard class, and therefore not capable of launching Nuclear warheads.

So the Daily Mail printed a picture of the Non British Ship purely to confuse the Argentine Non-Intelligence agency. Who will mostly likely now use that image claiming it was capture by their intelligence service and claim that it is the HMS Edinburgh lol

The one reason I believe Chavez ran for election when he knew he was dying was pure vanity. He could not stand to have his scam and failure revealed whilst alive.

Chavez did improve the lives of the poor of Venezuela. But only enough to keep him in power, never enough for them to become self-sufficient or middle class. Much like the Kirchner oligarchy, the primary goal is to keep power and the wealth the can thus be acquired.

The French have an agreement with the UK that we can borrow their warfare kit whenever we need it as long as it doesn't put France in a weaker position. I read estimates that it would take about six months for an RN crew to train to use something like the CDG aircraft carrier; what are the chances that we've already been doing that? France and the UK have been like “that” in recent conflicts, I wouldn't be surprised if they came to give a helping hand if it kicked off in the Falklands, despite the crap they tried to pull with arms supplies to the Junta in 1982.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), Argentina ranks third in recoverable shale gas reserves. Argentina has 774 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of technically recoverable shale gas resources, with more than half of that in the Neuquén Basin on the western side of the country.

    Fundamentally Freund: Britain’s Falkland follies

The result has been periodic outbreaks of saber-rattling and occasional bloodshed, with no immediate end in sight to a dispute that seems as outdated as it is senseless.

I am referring, of course, to the British stranglehold on the Falkland Islands.

January 3 marked 180 years since British and Argentine naval vessels battled it out at sea, with King William IV’s forces emerging triumphant and asserting His Majesty’s control over the area.

In the finest tradition of British imperialism, a governor was quickly appointed, and some 1,800 settlers descended on the Falklands within 20 years, despite howls of protest from the Argentine government.

UNTIL TODAY, Argentina continues to demand the return of what they refer to as Las Malvinas, and the two countries fought a brief but bloody war over the islands in 1982 which left 900 dead.

    1) Which country PROBABLY has the most shale gas in the World?: AG.

    2) Can these fields be developed with existing technology?: Probably not, we need to develop new techniques to release the gas - none other than the CEO of YPF.

    3) Are AG capable of developing the techniques on their own?: NO.

    4) Does any other company possess techniques that can extract the gas?: NO.

    5) Does Chevron have the ability to develop suitable techniques?: PROBABLY but not for the existing contract price.

    6) How long will it be before gas can be recovered?: Longer than TMBO has left before the mass of the population wise up to the fact she is thieving the country blind and she has to run for it.

    Understand now?
