Foreign Office insists Argentina was informed in advance Falklands’ MLAs would attend Hague/Timerman meeting

Saturday, February 2nd 2013 - 19:45 UTC
Full article 135 comments

The last round of the Falklands’ dispute between the UK and Argentina seems to have exposed a new blunder of Minister Hector Timerman, since according to the Foreign Office from the very request last December for a meeting with Foreign Secretary William Hague this month in London, the Argentine official was clearly informed that Falklands’ representatives would be present when the particular issue of the Islands was raised. This just keeps giving....hahahahahahaha

Timerman needs to be careful misquoting (or lying) about the United Nations:

The UN has never said that:

    1) the Falklands is a special case where self determination doesn't apply
    2) that implanted populations cannot govern (I.e. every single country in the Americas, plus New Zealand, Australia plus plus) especially in the Falklands where there is no indigenous.

His lies are becoming more desperate.

@7 What's wrong with having family in the UK? Your president and Nestor have family in Germany, they can probably go see their unmarked graves in Nuremberg every now and again. I admit though, it's easy for them to go and visit Uncle Adolf because his grave is in some ski resort in Argentina.

You're just a racist who hates British people because of your jealousy, and this jealousy makes you sour.

You, like most argentines, are the personification of sour jealousy.

    @7

Are you saying Dick Sawle can't be an islander because he wasn't born on the islands?

I wouldn't normally endorse such racist views, but if that is Argie logic, let's go with it.

Nobody evicted in 1833 was born on the islands, therefore they weren't islanders, therefore no right to be there.

Excellent, job done. The islands future, by your logic should only be decided by people born there, or direct defendants thereof.

You can stop wheeling out Vernets decendents...Vernet was born in Munich.

Anyone else you've got, who was born on the islands or can prove they are a direct decendent of someone born there...I am sure we can arrange them a vote in the referendum.

  • Anglotino

Timer man is right, ”according to the UN” self determination does not apply to implanted colonies.

However he is being disingenuous when he says this applies to the Falklands. I guess it always pays to mix a little truth in with the lies to make a point to the uninformed and uneducated.

This was to stop future colonisation attempts such as Israel's creation of settlements in the West Bank, not applicable to events that happened more than 100 years before the UN was formed.

It is the same as territorial integrity. Again used to stop invading forces tearing apart countries they have invaded. Again applicable to modern phenomena.

Argentina's insistence that the Falklands is subject to these provisions is simplistic and false.

Anyone taking this to its farcical extreme would find that large parts of the Americas would need to be 'uncolonised'. Poland would need to move eastward and return land to Germany.

Ukraine would have to give up independence along with dozens of other countries such as South Sudan, Australia, Pakistan etc.

Uruguay's existence does not disrupt the territorial integrity of Argentina. All countries have to end somewhere.

And the UN has never ever renounced the right of self-determination for the Islanders. It doesn't matter what is said in any UN resolution, until the General Assembly removed this right from the Charter, it will apply.

I know its all been said before. And this drag on until the Islands declare independence sometime in the future. Until then Argentina's obstinance will actually continual to have a declining effect on the Islanders.

There are plenty of anomalous sovereignties around the world.

Armenia is not recognised by Pakistan, as Pakistan supports Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. However Azerbaijan recognises Armenia! Go figure.

The Falklands nation has existed for 180 years without Argentina and the next 180 will be even easier.

I've found an interesting article about Richard Gott's extreme views...

'Stupid Gott on the Falklands - January 2, 2012 at 11:52 pm
Every few years the preposterous “anti-imperialist” Richard Gott comes out with an article in the Guardian proposing that rights of the Falkland Islanders should be overridden in the name of Argentina’s geographically-based mini-imperialist “claim” to the islands.
The last time he came out with his anti-democratic proposal was on the 25th anniversary of the outbreak of the Falklands war, and he was in no doubt about the justice of Argentina’s claim:“The Falklands belong to Argentina. They just happen to have been seized, occupied, populated and defended by Britain. Because Argentina’s claim is perfectly valid, its dispute with Britain will never go away,” he wrote in the Guardian of 2 April 2007. And in case anyone was in any doubt about Mr Gott’s attitude towards the Falklanders themselves: “At some stage, sovereignty and lease-back will have to be on the agenda again, regardless of the wishes of the islanders.”...'

But then I forgot, Dany, you are a military genius. You are ready to sacrifice at least 10,000 Argentines (but not yourself) in trying to invade the Falklands.

Your plan is brilliant. Just point these men at the Falklands and say GO!

However, parts of your plan are vague. Such as how you are going to get these men to the Falklands, and how you are going to resupply them, and how you are going to evacuate the wounded, and most importantly what you are going to say to their families when they all die in a futile and pointless attempt, so you can feel like you have a big dick.

@46 Of course! How would you like to start? Have you got any barges capable of crossing 400 miles of ocean? How many of your little cockleshells can cope with a wave? This is the state of your “navy”: “The service is underfunded and struggling to meet maintenance and training requirements. The 2013 budget allowed for the 15 operational vessels to each spend less than 11 days at sea, whilst the submarines averaged just over 6 hours submerged in the whole of 2012. The Almirante Brown class destroyers are short of spares and their ordnance has expired whilst the Antarctic patrol ship ARA Almirante Irizar has been under repair since a fire in 2007.” How's your air force? Do the wings drop off automatically? You no longer have a Boeing 707 transport squadron. Half the C-130 Hercules are out of action. You have 49 combat aircraft. And the Army? “A major problem of today's Army is that most of its combat units are understrength in manpower due to budgetary limitations”. “As of 2012, the army has 44,233 military personnel.” The British Army has 138,500! Would we want to travel all the way to argieland? Why don't we send some of our 64 Trident D5 missiles? Each with 12 warheads. Range around 7,500 miles. Wouldn't have to leave home! How many would you like?

    Gott the spy

Gott resigned as literary editor of the Guardian in 1994 after it was alleged in The Spectator that he had been an “agent of influence” for the KGB, claims which he rejected, arguing that “Like many other journalists, diplomats and politicians, I lunched with Russians during the cold war”. He asserted that his resignation was “a debt of honour to my paper, not an admission of guilt”, because his failure to inform his editor of three trips abroad to meet with KGB officials at their expense had caused embarrassment to the paper during its investigation of Jonathan Aitken.[4]

The source of the allegation that he was an agent, KGB defector Oleg Gordievsky. In his resignation letter Gott admitted “I took red gold, even if it was only in the form of expenses for myself and my partner. That, in the circumstances, was culpable stupidity, though at the time it seemed more like an enjoyable joke”. One issue was whether during the 1980s, the KGB, would have thought Gott's information worth £10,000. War is coming...?

Well let's hope not Dany because “war” has moved on since 1982 and the Argentine military hasn't.

You are quoted as saying you'd be prepared to lose 10,000 Argentine troops. The problem is that not even with 1 million troops could you do it.

Simply put, the amassing of an Armada in Patagonia would arouse suspicion, and the whole frikking fleet would be sunk by weapons you wouldn't even see coming. Submarines you couldnt see, or better still the harbours from planes outside of your range.

The death toll to Argentina would be such that the word “Malvinas” wouldn't be uttered for a millennium.

War is coming you say...I hope not.

More rubbish from the RG realm of fantasy...

'Terragno: “Islanders are not a people, are British” - The candidate for the UCR Senator Rodolfo Terragno said today that the referendum that made English settlers in the Falkland Islands “will confirm that they are not a people who are British.”
In that sense, he warned that “if part of the United Kingdom can not be arbitrators in a dispute between his country and Argentina” for sovereignty on the islands.
Terragno also said that Britain does not want dialogue with Argentina because the government of Cristina Fernandez “attacks the British.”
“It is fortunate to have a referendum in the Falklands because islanders will ratify what Argentina said that there are a people who are British,” he said in a conversation with radio Brisas.
The attorney, formerly of radical governments and OAS consultant, said “there is a misperception very important to say that there has to be a referendum that will say what we want.”
“Always rhetoric hurts us, the other is that UN has set a dialogue and Britain will not, because the government is attacking the British and the pirates then there is little thought on the underlying issue,” he said.
Moreover, in relation to the current domestic policy stated that “people do not care which political party will rule, who cares solve problems such as insecurity and inflation. Proposals and tries to follow leaders.”

    Lanata says

There is nothing Argentine about the Islands. The people eat fish and chips, they have dinner at 6pm; they are British. The only thing that is remotely Argentine is maybe the landscape that resembles barren Patagonia and the thousands of still active landmines that the Argentine forces left behind.“

”Argentina's policy towards the Malvinas is insane, erratic, senseless,“ said Lanata and blocking the ports is more of the same madness

The phrase that “sovereignty will have to be on the agenda *regardless of the wishes of the islanders*” shows how out of touch he is with where we are now. The documents he is citing are selective and of course the big fact that the 1982 invasion changed everything. No UK PM is going to dare to sell the islanders down the river.

As regards Bulgaria, that would surprise no-one. It is nearer and they can get there reasonably easily by car. I'm not really sure what your point was on that one. It is only some of the UK tabloids that are whipping the story up. Economically we are in a different phase compared with the influx of Poles. If they can't get jobs and are being restricted from claiming benefits, that should act as a brake. If they have something worthwhile to offer then fine.

    Anoth quote from Jorge Lanata

“Argentina needs to integrate the Islands, not isolate them. We have to face up to the fact that we lost the war. Malvinas is not part of Argentina; it is part of our imagination. We're so blinded by years of rhetoric that we can't see reality”.

Finally Lanata believes that the revival of the sovereignty claim is a smokescreen for the belt-tightening the government of Cristina Fernandez has to enforce after almost nine years of uninterrupted growth.

“It's no coincidence, this is the first time in history that a Peronist government has had to put austerity measures in place – they don't know how to do it”.

There's not much to say on the Richard Gott article, the comments below it say everything - in fact I have never seen a Guardian comments page so united against a left-wing viewpoint so you can consider him a massive outlier of British opinion. As for Gott himself I had never heard of him prior to today but was most amused to read his Wikipedia entry.

The Simon Jenkins article has slightly more credibility though his gushing praise for CDK has dated badly. I wonder if he'd write the same thing today?

Ultimately, the point that Argentina keeps missing is that it doesn't matter what the British people think, it only matters what the F.Islanders think. That's called Self Determination. For us to hand the islands over regardless of the wishes of the FI people would require us to be the very colonials you accuse us of being!

@92 the only bilateral thing that is called for by the UN is an agreement between the administered and administering state on the nature of decolonisation. The democratically elected UK and Falklands governments have agreed that this will be through 'free association', as per the UN's guidelines, and the referendum will end the question on decolonisation forever.

Argentina is the uninvited third party, according to the UN.

    Perhaps this might help you

Mrs Kirchner drew a parallel between the situation in Palestine and in the Malvinas/Falklands. She was referring to the fact that both Israel and the UK ignore statements of the United Nations general assembly. In fact, if the situations have got anything in common (which they don’t) it could be argue that it is Argentina that holds the most objectionable role, by behaving without any regard for the views of the inhabitants of the territory under dispute. Moreover, it may be worth recalling that all UN resolutions on the islands have been issued by the general assembly, and none by the Security Council (whose resolutions are binding).

@104 Steve-33-uk: What a nice 'Bitish' bloke this Isaac Bigio is. How on earth did he get a British passport? I think the powers that be really need to pull there finger out if some horrible little scumbag like him can gain British nationality.

    http://www.theprisma.co.uk/2010/09/14/isaac-bigio-from-aiu-%E2%80%9Cin-the-uk-we-all-belong-to-the-same-group-we-have-the-same-traits-and-the-same-problems%E2%80%9D/

“He continues to be defined by his roots”, and I would like him to go back to them.

I did find one thing he said interesting (not that you can trust what he says if that press.tv interview is anything to go by), “Take the Argentinians for example, many of them have European Passports.”

Really? But do we not hear on this website how South American they are, and the Falklanders should go back to (even if they never came from) the UK? Why would Argentinians have European passports?

I think a clue might be found with that well known Argentinian sportsman, Sergio Parisse:

    What a strange article.
Are they asking for none British citizens to be able to vote in British elections.

”Here those that originate from the English speaking Caribbean are members of the Commonwealth, they have the right to vote in the general elections (something the Spanish, including the wife of the Deputy Prime Minister, Miriam González can’t do)”

@106, “you are European immigrints you fool.”

Oh let's not get certain whacked-out trolls here started... Have you not heard that AR history is marinated in politically correct New World Special Creationist mythology? If you had, then you'd know they all sprung up from the ground in unison from Buenos Aires to Belgrano Base at their current demographics screaming “Viva Peron!” “Las Malvinas es Argentina” and of course “The Junta wasn't ~our~ fault but this commemorative coin of our... uh... their Dirty War on the usurping pirats is, like, totally wicked kewl!” (that last one losses some gravitias when wrung through Bing Translate but I think we all know that reflects the true Campora fascist nostalgia) before any date on which the UK can provide hard substantial documentation and probably even before house Wessex cornered the local real estate market! None of have any tie to the old world, not even as Berengia Pedestrians. (Say what you will of the Creationists that plague US school boards, they at least accept human migration theory.)

We should support and help economically and politically Isaac Bigio and his organisation that claim the rights of Self-D for “Latinos and Hispanics” in UK so they can desire their own future for them and their sons.

Why to say “to check” if you easy can say “checar”?
Why to say “to park” if you can easy can say “parquear”?
Why to say “to polish” if you can say “polichar”?
Why to say “to walk” if you can say more naturally “uolquear”?

Have in mind boys how easy for “Latinos speakers” would be to write in UK lets see an example, shall we?

“Ai jav tu uolkear ten blox tu arraiv tu mai guorc dis mourninn.”

Just perfect, who is going to have spelling mistakes like this?

Timerman's schedule in London includes a meeting the British-Argentine Parliamentary Group - an all party group.
    http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm/cmallparty/register/argentina.htm

From personal experience, I don't believe he will find any “fellow travellers” here - he would be better off just having his meeting with Hague and the two Falklands legislators.

    Good luck Mr. timerman
These are the views of some the members of the committee.

Baroness Hooper: My Lords, I am delighted that the Prime Minister was able to make it quite clear to the President of Argentina that the British people and the British Government stand beside, and behind, the people of the Falkland Islands in deciding their own future.

The teenage Sajid became interested in politics, cheering Mrs Thatcher’s battles for the Falklands and against the NUM

Mike Weatherley, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Hove and Portslade, backs calls to block loans to Argentina, following increasingly aggressive rhetoric against Britain and her sovereignty over the Falkland Islands.

Guy Opperman MP: Argentina should accept that the Falklands Islands wish to remain British

The group of visiting British legislators included Lord McNally (Liberal); Lord Faulkner (Labor) and MP Mark Pritchard “”they insisted with kelpers' self determination ”

“UN invites Argentina and Britain to negotiate without mentioning the Islanders”

No wrong-try reading the resolutions with some form of reading aid.
The resolutions clearly state that the Islanders(population) interests are taken into account.
Argentina does not take their interests into account so Argentina breaks the resolutions.
The resolutions are subject to the provisions of the UN Charter, all of which (including the territorial integrity with the UK), support the islanders and not Argentina.

The 'population' refers to the Falkland Islanders in the resolution as strangely enough it refers to the people that live on the islands.

    @108
“because UN never recognized that Pirtes government in Malvinas”

Probably because the Malvinas don't exist but the UN Charter applies to everyone as no one is exempt-and all of its provisions support the Falkland Islanders, not colonialist regimes like Argentina

    @134Pete

”The resolutions clearly state that the Islanders(population) interests are taken into account.“

The Argentinians are interpreting their ”interests“ as ”what's best for the population“, ie. what Argentina deems is best for the Islanders, not the Kelpers.
Timerman has stated directly that their ”wishes” are not going to be considered.
