Spain disappointed with Gibraltar’s Picardo picture next to President Obama
The Spanish Ministry for Foreign Affairs has contacted the US government to express its unease over the recent visit by the Gibraltar Government to Washington, according to reports published in Spain. Read full article

Instead of being concerned about other peoples issues that do not involve spain maybe just like another spanish speaking country that flouts human rights, they should be concentrating on more pressing issues at home like making its peoples lives less miserable, and leave these smaller nations to live their life without harrassment or aggression from cowards!
Spain is becomming quite pathetic, these Latin countries seem to be all run by childish types with inferiority complexes.

If they think we will forget the delays at the borders, deliberately to inconvenience people visiting the Rock, even if they happen to be Spanish working in Gib, then they have another thing coming.
Chief Minister Fabian Picardo needs to speak with the Foreign Office and get them to promise that Spain will NOT receive ANY aid for their financial crisis from the UK, because they've been aggressive to Gibraltar. The UK foreign office should veto any EU support for Spain, until Spain gives assurances to all other EU states that they will not trespass in British Gibraltar Territorial Waters, that they admit that these waters do belong to us and that they ask the EU to remove the Gibraltar section from the Spanish protected wildlife habitat zone.
I cannot wait for Catalonia to declare independence from these morons in Madrid. Then the fireworks will really begin when Spain realises that half their income has disappeared. Then the Catalans can finally spend their money on their people, instead of propping up those fat cat politicians on the bribes in Madrid.

Best of all, Gibraltar is English speaking, sympathetic to America, has troops fighting the war on terror alongside the USA. No wonder that President Obama had a picture taken with Picardo.
I only wish that the White House would allow US nuclear submarines to visit Gibraltar to re-provision, rather than stopping at Rota in Spain. The US Navy would be very welcome in Gibraltar and have a far better time than in Rota.
Well let's see, if they are true to form, they may have made some vieled threats about that facility.

Pathetic. Meanwhile, nearly 30% of their population are unemployed, most of the government have been caught taking under the counter payments, and the king's son in law is on 8m euros bail pending a fraud investigation. You would think they had bigger things to worry about.

There is 30% unemployed and the Government doesn't have the money to keep feeding them. There are already suicides every week from people who are desperate.
I doubt that it will be long before there are mass riots in the streets. Far worse than in Greece. The Catalans need to break away quick before they become entangled in Madrid's mess.
Spain will fall apart. As it does, the politicians will take ever more extreme actions to gather the support of the nationalists. They might even consider military action.
Gibraltar needs to be ready, because there might be thousands of refugees trying to escape the breakdown of their country.

They would be ideal trade partners. Both have the same culture, both need each other.
Argentina could have great agricultural wealth to share - beef, bio-fuel, lemons.
Spain could have its businesses and more advanced technologies invest money and knowledge to help Argentina extract its huge potential of oil and gas reserves and... oh, darn! There was some trouble about that earlier, wasn't there? Repsol? YPF???
Ok, forget that. :-(

Spain knows that under successful business rules, Gibraltar is flourishing whilst they are stagnating. The more successful Gibraltar becomes, the closer they come to being able to strike out as an independent nation. Not that Gibraltar needs to anyway at present.

As they continue to be prosperous, collecting more revenue than they spend, they appear more able to become independent, apart from the matter of defence. When the oil starts flowing, then this will transform the Falklands, making them capable of increasing the population to match the resources.
It's only natural that Gibraltar should be courted by nations such as the United States. Not just because they speak the same language, but because they are becoming a financial hub. It must stick in the throat of the Spanish that despite their repeated attempts to siege and strangle Gibraltar, the Rock keeps expanding.
On that point, I feel that the Rock should seek to increase their land area. When I first came to the Rock in the 60s, it was much smaller than it is now, but like Monaco, they've found ways to develop the land to squeeze more and more people in. I know that the topography under water does present problems, but this didn't defeat Monaco. Cannot help but feel that Gibraltar can go from strength to strength.
It must stick in Madrid's nationalistic throat that for all their efforts to stifle Gibraltar, every attempt failed. You have to laugh at the Spanish, they are really not that bright. They should be embracing Gibraltar, not trying to be aggressive. It must be the Spanish/Argentine nature to try and bully people.

@27, if you take that idea seriously I'd think you'd have to take into account the implications on offshore boundaries. Monaco has collegial relations with France compared to what exists between Gibraltar and Spain. I suspect taking that in, Gibraltar, both literally and figuratively, have no where to go but “up”.
