Commending Mr. Hague for his frank and open comments'
“But Mr Hague told The Sun: “This is a community that is nearly 200 years old. They seem very determined to remain British. If there's any chance they would change their minds, the approach by Argentina is completely counterproductive.
”It only fortifies the Islanders' determination to stay British. It is only going to add to the decades and centuries that the Falklands will remain British.“
Hague called Mr Timerman's statements ”extraordinary“, adding that Falkland islanders ”very much do exist and they are in good heart and great shape“.
Mr Hague said the Argentine government, led by President Cristina Fernandez had rejected diplomatic dialogue in favour of ”a pattern of bullying and intimidatory behaviour towards the Falkland Islands“.”

One has to wonder what the strategy of Argentina is.
Are they simply trying to provoke the UK into a hostile reaction, by withdrawing all diplomatic ties ?

That would play into their hands, nicely, except that time is on the side of the Brits and FIers. Argentina is taking desperate measures to create an International Incident.
If the Brits just 'hold their course', until after March, the Argie case will start to crumble at the same time their economy does - too late for them.

    :-)

I see Suzie was quick today at No 1 followed closely by Marcos at 2 with that boring article that has already been torn to shreds elsewhere. He obviously can fathom a country where a newspaper can so openly disagree with the government without the tax office closing them down.

Nothing new in this story. Argentina's actions have no effect on the Islanders.

Argentina perpetuates a status quo that it says it is against. Nothing it has done in the past couple of years or even decades has changed the situation one iota.

The interesting thing that neither he denies the blatant usurpation, as he is recognizing that earlier there was “someone” in the Malvinas Argentinas. Who were these “someone”?: Spain first, then Argentina; then, the trash, except two and a half months in 1982 when control returned to its rightful owners.

    Outburst:

“It is only going to add to the decades and centuries that the Falklands will remain British.“

That statement is diametrical to this one:

    ”The islanders deserve self-determination“

Seems to me Hague and the UK have the future all mapped out for the islanders, for centuries. So much for self-determination.

    Second outburst:

”he said that the Argentine government's refusal to hold talks over fishing rights and oil exploration”

What does any of that have to do with the dispute at hand? (dispute I do not support my country pursuing). The islands should remain as they wish to be.

But Argentina will never again sit down with the UK and negotiate over anything, Falkland's related or not.

British logic does not impress anyone outside Britain.

Argentina will not sit down with the UK on anything bilateral out of self-preservation. The UK will and should not sit down and negotiate sovereignty.

So in both instances, it is not Argentina that refuses anything. The UK refuses sovereignty negotiations which is fine, I would go as far as saying it is not a refusal but simply common sense. But so is Argentina exercising common sense by keeping as much distance as humanly possible from being entrapped by the UK in any other areas.

Nothing good has ever come to anyone that signed any treaties with the British.

You should have expressed yourself better, then. Is that what you were saying? Normally your thoughts are broadcast quite clearly.
Sounds more like you were looking for something to take exception to.

Hague clearly made his point that the FI would be British as long as they wished, far longer than Timerman's “20 years”, a calculated slap to the British and a 'play to the crowd' (at home).

Personally, I am sure that Hague is too experienced and professional to allow emotion to jeopardise his own strategy.

As to outbursts, take a look at yourself, “I feel like I am truly dealing with retards.” Nice!

You certainly want to vent some strong negative opinions for someone who says we are correct about the Falklands. Anything to argue, right?

So the Falklanders should remain under the UK because they want to, but we'll pull off all propaganda available to us to prevent the Scots from leaving the UK.

Thanks for the article. It just emphasises the UK, amongst all the nations on this planet, allows constituent parts to hold referenda. Should be no surprise that the UK government doesn't want Scotland to secede.

Publishing a report on the consequences of this secession is a wise move. People should know the facts. The Scottish government will push for a Yes vote and the UK government will push for a No vote.

I'm a little perplexed as to why you find this article “a complete disaster”.

“Here you have the same government lecturing Argentina on self-determination, but doing all it can behind the scenes to discourage another group of people from doing just that”.

    Huh?

This isn't behind the scenes. The report was released was it not? Did we read the same article? The one that uses the verb PUBLISH?

“the 57 page legal opinion – drafted by the British government”

Ooooh it is so hidden…. You know, being drafted and published and all.

Argentina was invited to the Islands to campaign and educate the population on voting for a more favourable Argentine outcome.

Considering your confusion, I am guessing that Argentina does not hold referenda.

As for calling people retards, it is you that have changed from calling Cameron’s statement an “outburst” and now just calling it “emotional”. Make up your mind. Mind you, if you wanted to see emotional outburst then you wouldn’t have to look any further than your own president.

“British logic does not impress anyone outside Britain” – well unlike you, they at least have logic.

As to your “antipathy and animus towards Europeans and North Americans”. That’s totally fine. I like Argentineans. I have always said I did and will continue to. For someone as xenophobic as you, I have to wonder why you keep interacting with the very people you dislike. Try to learn some history.

Fancy bringing up something that is completely irrelevant to this story! I mean, when you are losing an argument, you Malvinista's and La Campora trolls never do that?

Referendum, freedom and democracy, are obviously alien concepts to you La Campora types. Is that why you are so afraid of it? In the UK we are not afraid of it.

If the Scottish vote to cede fine. If they vote to remain part of the UK, fine. It's their choice.

You see, no histrionics, just calm arguments for and against.

Oh, and if Argentina thinks it will get an ally if Scotland cedes, then I have 2 words for you:- Mount Tumbledown.

The Scottish will never forget how may of their sons died to restore freedom to the people of the Falkands.

    @48 - Jose

Your post is funny. Did you know that Queen Elizabeth II is a direct descendant from the very 1st King of Scotland: Kenneth McAlpine (ruled 843-858 AD)? He was her 34th Great Grandfather!

Interestingly enough, Queen Elizabeth II is also a direct descendant from the very 1st King of England: King Egbert (ruled 802-839 AD). He was also her 34th Great Grandfather!

In fact, the two Kingdoms were united by a Scottish King, not an English one. The only reason the two governments united was when the Scottish government had bankrupted the country, and suggested the union as a way out of their financial difficulties.

So the actual formation of the United Kingdom, was actually a Scottish idea, not an English one.

But Jose, enough of British history. How do you feel having a Foreign Minister who has embarrassed your country internationally with his amateurish antics, and all he got out of it was a piece of paper that even his sycophantic 'group of 18' wouldn't sign?

Well first off the plural is referenda.

Secondly, I agree with you that Argentina does not have any secessionist movement. As we agree, the Islands are not Argentinean so this referendum is not about seceding from Argentina but confirming their continued status within the UK.

The UK is about to hold another referendum on one part seceding, so its not adverse to asking it constituent parts their opinion.

Bu the most interesting part of the list above. The only region that has had a referendum on independence is…… Quebec. Now who is the Head of State for Canada again?

So by your own admission, the only territories in the Americas that are able to hold referenda on independence are those with the Queen as Head of State.

Pity none of the republics you listed are quite so accommodating to self-determination.

@51 you know it was a scottish person (king) who united England and Scotland, right? Nothing to do with William Wallace, it was to do with the debt they'd gathered up and couldn't pay from trying to make a colony in Latin America. These facts kind of make you look like an imbecile, Marcos.

You Rgs are just frightened little ponies, the referendum is what scares you all most because it is democracy in action and you don't know what that is after spending most of your lives living in a dictatorship where you can't say what you want

But, the important thing is sovereignty. If Argentina believes the Falklands is theirs take your case to the International Court of Justice. You don't dare do it, do you because you have no case whatever? Furthermore, the population of the Falklands, some of whom can trace their ancestry back to before 1833, don't want Argentinean rule.

They don't want to be a pariah nation under warning by the IMF, they don't want the influence of Chavez, Castro and Iran, they don't want corrupt politicians and police, they don't want 30% inflation, they don't want a fast depreciating currency, they dont want to live on $7 a day, they don't want Argentinas Mafia, they want to be able to walk out after dark without the threat of being raped mugged or murdered, they don't want a society where you have to have iron bars on your windows to keep out theives, they don't want any guns like you see as a 'must have' and they don't want Latin Alien Culture. And, in the referendum in March they will vote for what they want to retain, their association with Britain.

They do want to retain the British culture, the quiet village atmosphere of the their towns and villages, they do want their own independent government, they do want the friendship and protection of a powerful friendly nation, they do want no crime fraud or guns on the street, they do want wildlife and fisheries carefully and intelligently managed, they do want controlled tourism, they do want to retain their British heritage, the British education of their children and they also want peaceful and friendly relations with their neighbours. This last desire is constantly frustrated by the aggressive and vocal actions of Argentina who they do not like or trust.

    Oh here we go again.

Why is it so difficult for you to understand that the Falklands are NOT a UK possession, but a SELF-GOVERNING British Overseas Territory?

Do you have learning difficulties that make COMPREHENSION difficult?

The Falklands belong to no one but the Falkland Islanders. End of.

I know that this goes against the 'little' delusion you Argentines like to build up regarding the Falklands, but the truth is the truth.

The UN recognises the Falklands as a self-governing British Overseas Territory. The EU recogises the Falklands as a self-governing British Overseas Territory.

But you Argentinians REFUSE to acknowledge that simple fact, BECAUSE it completely undermines all the lies you tell and have been told over the years.

Now be a good little La Campora Troll.

If you have a problem with the Falklands, take it to the International Court of Justice.

If you won't, then your claim is worth as much as an Argentinian Peso, which everyone, even your Government knows to be the case.

To confirm what David Cameron is saying. We are Falkland Islanders in our own right just like Argentinians are in their own right. Our ancestors were never implanted but came of their own choosing to find a new life in a place that was wild and free. On the other hand Argentina was colonised by the Spanish not because they wanted to explore a new world but because they wanted to colonise a new land.
The current issue today is that the Argentines domestic situation is so bad that their leader is desperate to do as Galterie did in 1982 that is cause a diversion. On top of that they are extremely concerned that the Falklands refferendum due soon will allow the Islanders to firmly stamp their ideals to the whole world and that will leave Argentina exposed and more vunerable with their Latin Amwrican neighbours.

History has shown that Argentina is the younger country trying to lay claim to a group of Islands that were claimed by Britain long before they became a Country themselves.
Falkland Islanders have made their Islands what they are to day and Argentina is very jealouse of their success.

you are incorrect to perceive an contradiction between:
“It is only going to add to the decades and centuries that the Falklands will remain British.“
    ”The islanders deserve self-determination“

the point is clear. he's suggesting that if Argentina want the falklands they need to be the more desirable option for her people. and that the campaign of harassment; in the context where britain will only go with the wishes of the kelpers; is likely to be counter productive to argentina's goals.

it is actually quite nice of him to give you a suggestion. you need to consider the words of our government entirely within the context that self determination is the fundamental overriding principal.

I presume your knowledge of Scotland comes from the Mel Gibson fairy tail !!!!
A potted view of Scottish politics
Scots do not vote for Conservative governments as they are perceived to be anti -Scottish in outlook and London-centric in practice.
Their natural leanings are towards Labour but this party disgraced themselves over their last terms in office being even more right wing than the Conservatives
Liberals are seen as a bit of a joke.
The bulk of the Scottish electorate voted SNP by default - not because there was an overwhelming desire to leave the UK but because they were the only moderate Socialist party who appeared to be able to do things that the populace wanted.
Having our own legal system, education system and Church do make us different from the rest of the UK in many respects. Our priorities are also somewhat different as regards University tuition and care of the elderly.
When the Union took place in 1707, the ordinary Scot had no vote in the matter - his country was “sold” for English gold and voted in by a clique of self seeking Lords. Burns described this in a poem “sic a parcel of rogues in a nation” - he was referring to these Scottish Lords.
As the Union grew in maturity, the Scots took advantage of the situation and out performed their English countrymen in commerce and science and helped to forge the Empire.
Whether Scotland will decide to vote for separation, I don't know. I suspect not, mainly for domestic ties.
So many of us have blood relations in England and vice versa that the thought that they could be classed as “foreigners” does not fit well. When it comes to putting an X in the ballot paper to make your own grandchildren foreigners I think not.
We will all be sick of the subject in the coming year.
Whatever happens, Argentina will not gain.

Most british have blood relations in all other parts of the world, the argentine insistence on some kind of 'latin-american' racial purity and provable ancestry to spain, italy or germany is just an anachronism of the WW2 era that their beliefs and political culture incontestably stem from.

Their whole life-world is an anachronism, with their curious not-socialism fascism stemming from 1950s Korea and WW2 Nazi germany, their territorial nationalism stemming from 1930s germany and their backwards amoral culture and endemic laziness 'get something for free' mentality stemming from Spain.

Dealing with a country that is stuck back in the 18th century is not really worth talking about, better the Falklands focus on building economic links with Uruguay and Chile.

However, they have to become an economic powerhouse that 'consumes' in order to ensure their future. 3000 people couldn't do this, and that is just a fact.

@71 Your 'Acquisition of Sovereignty' link was helpful, and says it all.

'Since the emergence of self-determination as a recognised principle of international law, a state may need to consult the inhabitants of a territory (if any) before they may cede sovereignty over it.'- This is what the UK is doing.

'Prescription is related to occupation, and refers to the acquisition of sovereignty by way of the actual exercise of sovereignty, maintained for a reasonable period of time, that is effected without objection from other states.'
    - Thought there wasn't a peep out the RGs for best part of a hundred years, a reasonable period one would think.

The Falklands case surely passes these acid tests with flying colours. If the international community is signed up to these principles, why are they (in the form of the UN) so quiet on the suibject and allow it to ruble on. What is it about Argentina that everyone is so reluctant to upset them?
Time for Mr Moon to get off the fence and put Argentinas cap on straight, and give some support to the Falkland Island Community's human rights. Otherwise what is the point of the UN (or have I just answered my own question?)

You may have answered all your own questions though Moon has said already said that Britain has broken no UN Resolutions.
Argentina stopped covetting the islands in 1850 and in 1941 when Britain fought the might of the Axis Powers along with its Allies, the Argentines ressurrected the claim as they thought that Germany would acquire the islands. They indeed stayed quiet for 91 years... that is evidence enough.

When are you going to win? I mean seriously, my mentally challenged friend, if 40 Milion Argies can't win against 3,000 Britsih then who can they win against?

No, scratch that, a better question would be:-

If 40 Milion Argies can't win against 3,000 Britsih then who is going to take you seriously?

@124 The benefit of voting No in the Referendum will be a FIG supported opportunity to discuss, in a responsible way, what the options for decolonisation are. This is necessary because the status quo isn't acceptable to the UN GA in this the third International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism. A plan to get the UK off the hook it placed itself on with the Crown Colonies is what is needed, not more of the same outdated colonialism. A NO Vote will open up the options of full integration into the UK and independence, one of which is clearly needed to “rob the argentine” of that tedious C24 pressure point.

Hey Anglotino. Always good to see you.

I gave Think the benefit of the doubt and tried telling myself his computer was jammed and kept randomly posting the same thing. As for the commander, did you know he has decided I'm one of your fellow countrymen? I could handle a bit of that. Where would we go first for a night out? Somewhere Australian? How about outside at the Brekky Ck, sucking on a muddy washed down by a Bundy? You beauty!

BTW, have I told you that at the upcoming internationally recognised and internationally supervised referendum I plan on voting YES?

That's if the commander doesn't have it stopped. He might explain to William Hague that we are the possession of the UK and simply have it stopped. If we are the possession of the UK I wonder if that means someone from the UK can just waltz in and take my house? It must mean something. I mean, otherwise, what's the point of it?

    What deadbeats.

I posted elsewhere that the Game that is being played in the South Atlantic was a Texas Holdem, with the Milky Bar Kid holding an unbeatable hand.

But I guess it's more sophisticated than that .... like Contract Bridge,
where the Kid and his Protector play out a combined game with low vulnerability and a 7NT bid; changing the lead player as circumstances dictate.
Auctions, contracts, bids ... it's just like the real world of international business; big beasts and little fishes, friends and enemies, Mercosurs and EUs.

Will you cry because your La Campora paymasters will stop buying you cheap plonk?

Well it's the referendum in March, then off to the UN in April to insist that the Falklands are removed from the corrupt decolonisation list, because they will have achieved one of the outcomes outlined by the UN, and will no longer be considered a colony (which they haven't been since the mid-1980's).

No more pay packet for you, my La Campora friend, you'll have to go out and get a job, assuming there are any to have in your ruined economy.

    @146 Think

Yes I made a mistake! I’m man enough to admit it. I misread the line number. Shouldn’t reply on the iPhone while driving.

Keep up your good work, it totally reflects on your country.

@ 128 Hey Joe. Long time no chat!

As you can see I did read that he THINKS you are an Aussie by my misdirected reply. What's so funny; he somehow thinks this belittles or demeans you. LMAO. Must be hard on poor old DoD to understand that both our countries are made up of immigrants.

I know why DoD is bitter. FIG declined his application to move there. Probably found his CV as phoney as we do….. FIG learnt a lesson regarding phoney CVs – perhaps DoD wanted to study penguins too!

So you are voting YES in the internationally recognised and internationally supervised referendum that is being held? Wow!

Have you thought this out? The ramifications? According to Argentina you can’t/shouldn’t/won’t vote…. You don’t have rights to do that….. Though also according to Argentina all your rights will be protected by them. Like the Mapuche.

Well I am glad you have weighed up the options. Continuation of your lifestyle and government and standard of living or being part of Argentina….

Yes I also don’t understand his new line of reasoning that the Islands are a “possession” of the UK.

And it was a Egg McMuffin – good call. It’s funny I saw a picture of Maximo last night for the first time and I didn’t realise who he was at first. I thought he was a really ugly female! Cristina’s little gordito!

The Malvinistas really are off their game recently. I’m not sure what is going on. A purge perhaps?

And yes Bell St does go through Coburg. I try to avoid Sydney Rd for as long as possible so take the backstreets. We had an Argentinean guest for dinner last night and I slept in. Craigieburn is the last suburb in the north before the Back of Bourke. Where I work isn’t even on Google Maps yet but finish next week to start uni.

Keep up the good work! My shout when we meet here or there!

The Constitution of the Falkland Islands is a UK Statutory Instrument. The Statutory Instrument takes authority from the UK British Settlements Acts of 1887 and 1945. The former begins with the words:

Whereas divers of Her Majesty’s subjects have resorted to and settled in, and may hereafter resort to and settle in, divers places where there is no civilised government, and such settlements have become or may hereafter become possessions of Her Majesty....

It follows that they are a possession.

    G'night Blue.

Is it just me or has the troll count jumped several degrees in the last few days? Funnily enough almost one month exactly before the Falkland Island referendum.

What La Campora doesn't realise is; the more comments on an article (including the same troll using dozens of aliases), the more likely the article will appear in search results like Google.

So these trolls are actually publicising the referendum MORE.

Thanks guys! Keep up the good work.

@165 You seem to be making a habit of getting ahead of yourself. As for your assertion, I'm happy to say that one of the principles that guides the UK is the Rule of Law. Being British, I much prefer the written word in two Acts of Parliament and a Statutory Instrument over your inane ramblings when it comes to determining the the status of the Falkland Islands.

    @195 Dany

Ah Dany, showing your ignorance on even more subjects, are you?

Well what does any of your statements have to do with the Argentine government being a bunch of cowardly bullies?

But if you want to change the subject, how about this.

Argentine Government imposes price freezes on all large supermarkets.

Argentine people rush to buy food items (especially with long shelf-life) and stock up on them.

The supermarkets run out of food to sell, and they can't afford to buy new items as they haven't got enough money to do so, due to the price freeze.

This is followed by shortages, riots, devaluation, inflation and stagflation, and finally another default.

CFK and her cronies leg it to their waiting escape helicopters, and spend the rest of their lives living in luxury on the money they stole from the Argentine people.

The Argentine people are screwed, because this default is on all the money the government took from them (mainly their pensions), and Argentina is declared bankrupt.

Provinces start looking after themselves, and eventually say sod off to the rest of Argentina, and declare their independence or try to join another neighbouring country, such as Chile.

Argentina implodes, and eventually splits into a lawless group of Provinces reminisant of Somalia.

Brazil and Chile invade whats left of Argentina to restore law and order, and divide the country up between them.

Argentina becomes a mere memory, and a footnote in history on how not to run a country.

There, isn't it nice to know that you have all that to look forwards to? The icing on the cake is that you destroyed yourselves, no outside help required or needed. At least Tobias/Nostril/TTT will be happy. He's always saying that Argentina needs no one, and you certainly don't to destroy yourselves. :D

Ah but that is your future, especially if you allow the gangsters who call themselves your government to continue to destroy Argentina.

Its only a matter of time. Also you resort to name calling because you have no argument worth a damn. If Argentina has a valid sovereignty claim, then take it to the ICJ. If you won't then you should all STFU about the Falklands, because you are obviously not serious about them.

But lets get back onto the subject. Answer these questions?

Why are you so afraid of 3000 people?

Why are you afraid of democracy and the rule of international law?

Why are you afraid of self-determination?

Why do you support a bunch of crooks that care nothing for Argentina?

If you don't answer, Dany, everyone will know that you are a cowardly, facist, with no regard for human rights or the rule of international law.

    Probably crap construction as well.

But we all know that the devaluation is coming soon, so there won't be much of anything on the shelves as people try to get rid of their worthless Peso's and buy something that they can trade/sell if they need too.

Dany is of course trying to divert the thread from Argentina's bullying actions regarding the Falkland Islands.

However, since there are now lawmakers in 2 South American countries who support the rights of the Falklanders, and an Argentine intellectual who basically says that the illegal Argentine invasion of 1982 has put a kabosh on any Argentine hopes of ever getting the Falklands, and with the referendum only a few weeks away; I expect that the rhetoric from the Argentine government will go into overdrive.

They direct their La Campora zombies to divert as many threads as possible, by posting the usual crap.

But it can't last forever. Tick, tock Argentina. Soon the Falklanders will tell the world what they want.

Thank you Argentina for advertising their referendum for them. It saved them the cost of advertising it themselves. :D

  • LEPRecon

    @204 - Dany

Am I jocking? I don't know what that means. Is it something Scottish? A jock strap? Who can say?

Dany, are you trying to divert the thread away from Argentina's bullying tactics?

The fact that a huge country like Argentina only feels 'manly' by trying to bully someone smaller and weaker than yourselves. Argentina picking on, and trying to steal the property of the Falkland Islanders. In 1982, you turned up and started pounding on the Falklands.

Of course you didn't count on the Falklands 'big brother' coming around and beating the sh!t out of you, did you?

Even now, you are wary of the Falklands big brother, refusing eye contact because they know that you are a coward and a bully.

But the UK's 'little brother' is growing up fast.

Soon they'll be 'moving out' and setting up shop on their own, but they know that they can always rely on their family for help, should it be required.

And all the bully Argentina can do is stand around an complain loudly about how they're not allowed to steal someone else's property.

But as I said above. Your foreign minister and UK ambassador have done a great job of advertising the Falkland Islands referendum to the world, while simultaneously showing the world why Argentina isn't a responsible country, and showing the international community that you disregard human rights when they become inconvenient to you, and therefore shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the Falklands.

So yes, thankyou Mr Timerman and Ms Castro, for helping the Islanders cause for freedom and self-determination. :D
