Falkland Islands’ referendum an act of value, say Uruguayan Parliamentarians

Friday, March 22nd 2013 - 07:14 UTC
Full article 70 comments

“I was surprised that such a small community with so few human resources to organise an electoral act did things so well, so properly, in conformity with international standards. This was a demonstration of a desire that this should be an act of value, not only in terms of its effects in the Falklands themselves, but also for the international image of a legitimate process.” Read full article

    Another example of a deliberately misleading headline. Trobo recognises the desire of the organisers for the Referendum to be an “act of value” but actually falls we short of saying that it is. There also seems to be, unsurprisingly and rightly, a focus on the technical aspects of the Referendum.

    Again, unsurprisingly, there seem to have been a number of observers there whose interests in the Islands are predominantly personal and commercial. Unparalleled access, funded by someone else and guaranteed to make “friends” and contacts. Can't blame them really.

    Dod and El Think (El Tonto), keep trotting out the Malvinista line....nothing surprising there.

    The fact is these two senior Uruguayan opposition politicians have both displayed some serious poitical backbone in being willing to participate in this process as independent observers. Of course, they knew their participation would not be popular with many Uruguayans, including their nation's present foolish and muddle headed defence minister who made some outrageous remarks about their involvement in the referendum process as observers, but as independent observer myself, as an Australian, I think for that very reason their involvement in the referendum process was very important is verifying how well it was conducted. Both these Uruguayan politicians demonstrated in separate interviews about the Falklands referendum that they were most impressed by the whole process, and its was clear they were equally impressed by the Falkland Islanders themselves. Like it or not, the referendum has been a real success, as many South Americans, including Argentinians (and including South American media outlets in Brazil, Chile and Argentina), are learning the Falklanders do exist and have a right to determine their future, contrary propagandist opinions expressed by the Malvinistas and their current pathetic government.

    Time for us British to call an end to the lies and misrepresentations of the truth by the Argentine government.
    Britain's right of sevreignty over the Falklands dates back way before Argentina even existed as an independant state. The relationship between Great Britain and The Falklands has evolved, over a long period of time, to its current form I.E The Falklands are a self governing BOT.
    Britain provides defence for the islands and leads on foriegn policy. 99.8% of The Falkands population are more than happy with this situation, as shown in the recent referendum.
    All the above are facts.
    Argentina, unwilling to accept The Falklands as British, decided to invade in 1982, they unconditionally surrendered to the British after a 74 day war that claimed the lives of 255 British servicemen and 3 Falklanders . That single act of stupid, umprovoked, aggression destroyed any chance of The Falklands ever becoming Argentinian in any form. END OF SUBJECT.

    Think will now call me a Turnip, seems to be his stock answer to anything he disagrees with, DoD will support him as they are the same person.

    Such a shame really.

    Stevie - please explain what you mean? I met these 2 and have met many Uruguyans over the last few years - they all say pretty well nuch the same.
    Like Chile they are aware that nations are born with neighbours - you cannot change them as you can friends- you have to lives alongside and “manage life with them”.
    So both Uruguay and Chile publicly support Arg in the UN and OAS etc - whilst quietly recognizing the Govt of the Islands and dealing with them and trading with us etc.
    Ir is called reality - as distinct from the world Argentina,s Govt tries to live in. See 9 above as an example!

    With all respect, it's not like Latin American people are queing to get to know the islanders, we all know you are Brits and our relationship with the Brits has never been better than cordial.
    Argentina are our neighbours, yes, but the only ones we “manage to live alongside”, are you Brits. Until you vote for independency and send those British troops home, you will never get Latin America on your side. Care or not, continue your futile attempts if you wish.

    I would be worried about the result if I was Argentine. Nothing to do with the sovereignty issue but as the alternative to be a BIOT is widely seen as being Argentine or some form of Independence, we now know that the number of people on the Islands that want to be Argentine as opposed to BIOT is at most 3. I suspect that those 3 votes were for independence but let's just assume that they were all for Argentine rule.

    That means in an island which probably has more than 3 Argentine permanent residents and over 150 of Chilean and Uruguayan permanent residents, they could only find 3 people who were willing to say they think being Argentine is better than being a BIOT citizen.

    Why would the support be this low. Anyone would THINK Argentina was an economic basket case with no rule of law run by corrupt mentally ill liars.

    Steve- simple solution if the Britsh Troops really bother you - tell the mad lady next door to stop all her threats and blockades, intimidation on the highseas of 3rd party vessels etc etc and start being a civilized neighbour(albeit with differences).
    She does NOT have to drop the claim! Then we could perhaps revert to a more pre 1982 set up where there was a mere 40 or so british soldiers here with nothing bigger than their rifles and a light machine gun.

    Splendid piece of work. Now, we know that CANADEM offers a service to those who can pay and not just the Canadian Government. So, in light of the complete lack of any open acknowledgement of involvement on their part, who is paying? In your assiduous search for coincidentally pro-Argentine arguments, you seem to have successfully unearthed the bleeding obvious :

    ”CANADEM is an Ottawa based non-profit, non-governmental organization established in 1996 with funding from the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. Its main purpose is to bolster peace, order, and good governance efforts through connecting international agencies (UN, Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, Organization of American States, etc.) to civilian experts. Originally designed as Canada's national roster of civilian experts, CANADEM is now the largest roster of screened international civilian experts in the world.[1] This non-profit Roster of International Experts enables international agencies, governments, and other non-profit organizations to rapidly connect with qualified professionals. US State Department's Office for Reconstruction and Stabilization lists CANADEM as one of its International Partners in peace building.[2]

    ...

    - Has recruited over 2500 experts for UN, OSCE, and other missions in Afghanistan, Sudan, Haiti, Serbia, East Timor, Sierra Leone, Kosovo, Bosnia, Croatia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ukraine, and many other countries.”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CANADEM

    Obviously some kind of put-up job then.

  • Doveoverdover

    @32 Obviously a put up job.

    http://www.canadem.ca/home/en/services/we-field-experts.html

    “Transfer the responsibility for your international expert recruitment, deployment and in-mission support to CANADEM in a cost effective and timely manner.”

    They might have added, “particularly if you've only got a couple of weeks to cobble it together but you're not short of a bob or two”.

    The search isn't for the bleeding obvious it's for the deliberately obscured but you have to start somewhere and Think has made an excellent start. Well done that man. Now, if you too would like to join the search for truth why don't you move off wikipedia and help track down the source of funding. For my part, I still think one needn't look too far beyond the International Republican Institute and its sponsors to find the answer. I challenge you to help Think prove me wrong.

    @34 I'm sure we all can agree that, since the views of the Islanders are well known and are reaffirmed at every Assembly Election, the Referendum was indeed a put up job . Goaded into it they were, in the hope that it would inform “world opinion”, which it won't as can be seen by the UN, EU and US responses to it It was unnecessary in one regard and ineffective, possibly even counter-productive, in the other.

    Whose interest was being served by this exercise? Not the interests of the UK electorate of which I'm a member. So it's the interests of some of the Islanders, surely, but only so long as they are coincidental with the interests of big business in the US.

    The truth is the point; isn't that enough for you?

    There are two things that l am not, Think.
    1) a squatter, but you are.
    l am part-owner of my land, with legal deeds, in a land which belongs to us & NOT to you.
    You are squatting on the native people's land.
    So any deeds you have are fake.
    2) devious, but you certainly are.
    l consider myself, as do others, to be an honest, generous person.
    l have never cheated anyone in my life.
    And what about MY point #3, Think?
    You just want to sweep that under the carpet, do you?
    The Saxons & Celts were not at war with you either, but that didn't stop you.
    And you did far more damage than Nelson did to Copenhagen & over at least 200 years.
    Yes Think, it was me that pushed(forced is too strong a word, lol!)into admitting that you were a Scandinavian.
    Don't deny it. its not yeahh yeahh at all. your memory is failing Alte.
    You were talking about “walleys”(valleys) & “wauxhalls”(vauxhalls)if memory serves me rightly.
    Be as that may, it doesn't matter.
    BTW- I believe it was Marcos who showed me a better way how to make the “wriggly snake”. you did, but his way is quicker.
    l suppose you might come from the moon, from now, l don't care.
    @49 DoD,
    That is a juicy piece about Cher Think.
    lt would explain a lot.
    Because all the Danes l know do not hate us like he does.
    They are as nice a people as the Swedes;-))))))(that line is for you Cher Think).lol

    “ I believe it was Marcos who showed me a better way how to make the “wriggly snake”. you did, but his way is quicker.

    I say...:
    His ”wriggly snake“ was quicker?
    Since when is that considered an advantage?
    Call me ”Old Fashioned” :-)))

    Think isn't Scandinavian, he isn't Danish or Swedish. If he was either of those nationalities, then he would know that Finnish is nothing like those languages.

    I've read his google translated crap many times, and i do laugh every time i see them.

    Isolde.
    Cats been at Think methinks. A snake? No I think a slowworm or a blind worm more likely. Please keep on with baiting our resident horn hatted Argentine Nordic bandit. He falls for it every time!

    @54 redpoll,
    The wriggly snake that we are referring to is the accent on the Spanish ñ.
    l used to leave it off because l didn't know how to make it.
    Marcos explained to me how to get it.
    Hold down the Alt key, type in 164, then release the Alt key.
    That still doesn't let Think off the hook for being an elusive, squirmy snake though. lol!
    @53 A.J.Rimmer,
    l know that Finnish is nothing like the other Scandinavian languages.
    l can speak a little bit of it. Not much, l was taught by one of our neighbours.
    He told me that it is related to Estonian language.
    l don't know what nationality Think really is & now l don't care.
    l was just trying to counter his, mostly, lying points & show him up for the hypocrite that he is.
    @52 Think,
    Yes, Think, we know what you mean.......................

    I'll have to apologize to Isolde, there's a great possibility that her neighbour said Estonian.

    As for Conqueror, educated by google and with wikipedia as main arguement; Estonian, yes. And Hungarian.

    I have no problem admitting my errors, and I do take certain pride in not having to google or wiki for my knowledge. When I studied that part of the world, all Baltic states spoke Russian, hence we learned that Finnish' closest language was Hungarian. That said, I always welcome new knowledge. I had no idea that Estonian was more related to Finnish than to Russian, hence my apology to Isolde.

    Why are you jelous of Think?

    I wouldn't be so quick giving an appology to that Squatting Blonde.

    1) At the time of her early youth in Niugini; Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania were annexed by the Soviet Union and almost forgotten by the rest of the world......

    2) Her Finnish friend would most probably mention Hungary, an existing Country, to that little flaxen neighbor of his.

    3) Mentioned Hungary, as most Finns do to this day, when explaining a foreigner the roots of their completelyimpossible language. ;-)

    Latvian: Baltijas valstis.
    Lithuanian: Baltijos valstybės.
    Estonian

    Think
    You reckon her friend is surnamed Wiki as well?
    Very probably, I've never heard a “Finne” compare his/her language to Estonian either, only to Hungarian. Either way, fact stands and Estonian is a Finnic language. With that and my doubts, my apology stands.

    @64 Stevie,
    Thank you.
    You'll notice Think trying to claim some sort of credit.
    Credit where its not due.
    Somewhat like Argentina's ridiculous“claim” on the Falklands & other British territories.
    Actually the gentleman in question said Estonian,Hungarian & Turkish.
    His name was Mauno, dead now unfortunately.
    @65 Think,
    You are often wrong,
    btw-its spelled forty, not fourty.

    He has just “Dissapeared”

    @67 Sr Think,

    Perhaps an email to the CANADEM Business Development Director or the CANADEM Roster Manager might yield some sort of answer. They won't be able to deny any knowledge of course since they conveniently provided themselves as Monitors. That's what you get with last minute rushes.
