The referendum has really got them rattled. If it was really so irrelevant they wouldn't bother talking about it.

Seems he's another that likes to make stuff up too. The UN has never called for “bilateral” dialogue. The funny thing is Argentina wants to drag everyone into it other than the Falkland Islanders.

I hope Angela Merkel gets to hear his comments - especially as it's pretty clear that Uruguay takes its orders from Argentina.

There will be an article about squid on here soon. Argentina are allowing 300,000 tonnes of unlicensed Ilex squid fishing in an effort to harm the Falklands economy. Why they believe that self harming environmental vandalism will help their cause is as yet unexplained. Seems like nothing more than petty vengeance.

Uruguay....Almagro, Huidobro, Mujica, etc....tell us all about how well the native Uruguayans are doing these days. Oh, that's right the native population in Uruguay is basically extinct......so, therefore, to use that favourite Malvinista term, you are all basically implanted people, much like your good neighbours, the Argentines.....that's right immigrants or the children or grandchildren of immigrants.....basically, the Malvinistas and their supporters are on the whole complete and utter hypocrits.

Also, I am sure the Dutch, French and German Governments will be most interested in the comments made their involvement in South America an dthe Carribean.

The true test of whether or not MPA, or any French and Dutch base for that matter, is a NATO base is whether or not NATO common funding is made available to develop and maintain it. That would require Spain's agreement as far as MPA is concerned so no chance.

@ 23 thanks for the explanation.
However IF you are not anti anglo/american and dont agree with invasions, torture, state founded murder and rattling with weapons explain the following
    1) Invasions .... 1982? you invaded The Falklands causing the needless deaths of Falklanders, British servicemen and Argentinian conscripts.
2)Torture ...... The Dirty War?..... How many Argentinians were tortured by thier oiwn government during this period?
    3) State founded murder...... The Dirty War? ..... how many of the argentinian rulers opposition were thrown out of planes, or murdered in some equally evil way?
    4) Rattling with weapons.... 1982 invasion.... Inciting and encouraging violence against british cruise ships/ Falkland registered vessels/ falkland fishing boats/ whipping up SA leaders like the late Chavez into making direct military threats? Argentinian ministers stating that if it wasnt for the defencive British military presenceon The Falklands, Argentina would invade again?

I dont actually expect a sensible reply from the usual pro Argentinian trolls but would be interested to see a reasoned and accurate reply to the above.

Who said it was illegal? Foolish yes, and very much political. The junta needed a distraction to be able to continue in power, so they chose a soft spot that they thought all Argentines could agree on, although I assure you that many, if not most, Argentines did NOT agree with neither the invasion, or the junta. Which again doesn't mean they renounce the islands.

What is celebrated today in Argentina regarding that invasion, is (the memory of) the pointless death of Argentinian young ones, nobody in their right mind would celebrate the junta.

I hope 'we' have all noticed that Stevie, our prize 'Citizen of the planet' has invoked the royal 'we' yet again “We are not anti anglo/american, we just don't agree with invasions, torture, state founded murder and rattling with weapons.”

He seems to invoke the 'we' designation irrespective of the country involved suggesting he has citizenship of all SA perhaps.

He is of course nothing of the sort, just very good at circular arguments in which he changes his position at will.

Back to reality: Almagro is a closet Argie and I have no doubt his allegiance to Uruguay suffers at times because of this.

Defence minister Eleuterio Fernandez Huidobro heads a standing army of approx 7,000 officers and men. GEC, of which I was a director, 100 times more people than that, but in Uruguay we are only just under 3 million in the country. At least my 'we' is a valid one, my wife and I were included in the latest census.

@13 Wow! So you and yours have been implanted twice. Mind you, “implanting” is only part of the process of transplanting. When I transplant something, I am sure to give it a good “watering-in”. Is that why your “mind” is so soggy? Or are you an alien from another world?
@15 “NATO” isn't in Kabul. ISAF is. Seen any blue berets or helmets? Try to keep up.
@24 Really? Then why do you do so much of it?
    @27 Keep taking your tablets!
@30 Ah, the old “it wasn't us” ploy. Not even the Germans tried that one in 1945. Tell us about how “the junta” kept large groups (tens of thousands) available to chant and dance and wave banners and flags in the streets. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xqwNsmzCbM
@35 Remember that organisation that your “leaders” keep rushing off to whinge to? The one that you and yours demand that the UK kowtows to? What's it called? The United Nations is it? Well, it said it was illegal. And it told you to get off the Islands. And you IGNORED it. Notwithstanding that the instruction came from the part of the organisation that all members are supposed to OBEY.
@39 I agree. The territorial “limitation” defines the area that has been attacked, not the area where action can be taken.
@44 I agree. In these days of “austerity”, it's nice to know that 27 other nations could be sending warships, combat aircraft and ground troops. Taken over a 2-year period, the UK would only have to send a warship for a month every two years. Fun to see a Marina Militare or Armada Espanol warship on patrol.
@50 Ah, but Europe (or even NATO) DOES have the military might to invade and hold South America. Would you like to research NATO and figure out how many combat aircraft, ground troops and warships it could mobilise from the 28 members?
@51 That's UNSC resolutions. Just saying.
@52 Of course it is! It's also alright for them to delay dredging the channels that lead to Uruguay's ports. There's an agreement. Oops, forgot. Argieland doesn't “do” agreements.

@57, yeah no argument BUT, but there's what people do the day after with the adrenaline rush (no excuse by ANY means) and what you do decades later with a commemorative coin. You can't say that it was an emotional spur of the moment or any other lame apologetics when you have to make the design, melt the metal, pour it and roll 'em up neatly to send to the banks -- you know, the way the Japaneese did last year with their coin celebrating the “pacification of Nanjing” (oh yes, that didn't happen, did it?).

No Argentine hack can claim that they waive national responsibility for the invasion, they celebrated it the day after -- but they proudly commemorated it (AND its broader implications!) decades after.

@61 I'm sorry that these argie habits make you nauseous. But please, ask yourself, what has the bucket done to you? Surely the right thing to do is to find an argie and puke into it? It should be quite easy. Find an argie. (There are many of these all over Europe having fled their mother or fatherland for some reason.) Explain to them that the Falkland Islands (the Islas Malvinas are a fantasy invented by psychotics) are a British territory. Now think about this and test it with mouth movements. If they say “Malvinas son Argentinas”, there are actually 5 opportunities to puke down their throats. Wouldn't that be more satisfying than a bucket?

“military junta invaded the islands in 1982. Same junta that killed their own people”

Right, so what you are saying is that “military junta invaded the islands in 1982” so the head of the Army, Navy and Air Force invaded the Falkland Islands??? just those 3??

The rest of Argentina was against it? they took up arms and struggled to free themselves from this government who held them under it's boot?

    B*LL*CKS!!!!!!

We have all seen the news reels of Argentines DANCING, yes that's right DANCING in the streets at the news, we know there was about 8,000 Argentine occupying the Falklands, AND WE ALL KNOW that the only reason that the Junta lost power was because they lost the Falklands War.

..............and so Stevie, I will remind you

2nd Rule of Lying:- If you are going to lie, don't get caught.

My first post here although I have been reading this site for a while now. I felt obligated to apologize for my governments ( USA ) unwillingness to give unconditional support to our British and Falkland Island friends. I do not understand my governments decision in this matter but I am sure there are pragmatic reasons. I am fairly certain that if push came to shove we would stand in your corner as you have stood in ours on many occasions. I am confident that Britain and the Falkland Islands are more than capable of dealing with this problem themselves but they shouldn't have to.

Another comment I would like to make is that I am utterly befuddled by the interpretation of facts by South American politicians and posters. I will not bother arguing with them as logic seems to be thrown out the window in favor of vitriol and propaganda. Of course Argentina has zero claims on the Falkland Islands, of course the British are being responsible world partners by allowing the independence vote and of course the Falkland Islanders have spoken democratically, legally, forcefully and with unanimity. To express views to the contrary flies in the face of reason and logic.

It must be pretty uncomfortable being caught in the middle while two of your allies are about to have a dust up.

At the same time though, Obama has the power and the influence and the military muscle to have a word in KFC's shell-like and tell that enough is enough.

No point in being the most powerful nation on earth if you don't use it from time to time, right?

@71-2 A lot if us Americans familiar with the FI have been honked off at US State for~years~ on this. AR is NOT our true ally and in a post cold-war world it really is no reason to pander to the current government. And in contrast, State continues to demonstrate it's long-term habit of treating taking our stalwart allies, on whose support we heavily rely, for granted. After all, they are adults, well adjusted and are expected to understand “realpolitik” -- in contrast to Argentina's tantrums which her neighbors have to tolerate and even emulate lest they face off against AR's passive aggression head on. America, however is under no such obligation-by-proximity.

I've repeatedly brought up the dysfunctional workplace analogy w.r.t. Argentina, FI, UK and the rest of the neighboring states and it really is pathetically true. Once AR's office analog crosses the red lines that AR in the “fake” world of geopolitics has crossed repeatedly, her (assuming her hame is Cristina) hind quarters would be out the door in a heartbeat.... Unless of course she called the boss “Daddy,” at which point everyone else is told to “understand” her and see things her way and dare I say, stop “harassing” her by not tolerating her abuse and just get back to work. But in the real world these abused staffers would be taking their skills elsewhere leaving Daddy and his little princess to flail in a collapsing company. If only we could fire Argentina (or move to a parallel universe with better neighbors).

    Who is the leader-.
Who sets the tone- Who decides who his friends are – Obama
Who decides who his allies are – Obama
    ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Sadly we cannot do away with fate,
    We know he is wrong,
    We know Argentina is wrong,
But there is nothing we can do about it,
This is an American problem, and only the American military/and its people can stop or change him,
Whether we like it or not, the American people voted him into office,
We know millions of Americans support the British,
But fate will play this one out,
    The future,
Mr Obama has just signed a pact with Israel and south Korea ,and still wants to have a confrontation with Iran,
And who do you all think will fully and unconditionally support him,[among others ]
    to defend whatever the cost,
Who will stand by the American troops who will next go into battle,
    ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Britain, Britain, and Britain again, and a few others ,
Who will tell me that the mighty CFK and Argentina, will send troops to stand shoulder to shoulder with Americans.
Obama is wrong, and will be proved wrong; the British are the best ally they have
CFK is nothing, but Obama has his reasons,
The fact is, no matter how much we don’t like him, he controls it,
And the world will rejoice or suffer his decisions,
The problem lays in mr Obama, not the decent Americans who support us and the Falklands,
For allies have to earn that respect, and quite frankly CFK has no respect,
So why does mr Obama constantly defend them,
[You will have to ask him, wont you ]
    Just a thought.
    just an opinion .

Uruguay didn't say that, some minister said that, and I'm not certain he actually was speaking for the government. He certainly wasn't speaking for the people of Uruguay.

The fact that he has made such an outrageous and obviously erroneous claim undermines Argentina's support around the world. They see all these lies, and realise that lying is all Argentina and it's supporters can do.

There is a part of me that thinks that this has got to be a wind up, because it is so obviously not true, just to placate the loonies running Argentina.

I bit like last year when Uruguay stated that it had detected an RN Submarine, causing the Argentine government to go into a frenzy. I just think they (Uruguay) like lighting the blue touch paper, and backing off to see the Argentine government explode into a frenzy of insane activity.

I have lived in Uruguay for just about 2 years now and have followed the Presidential progress of Mujica and intended to go to his inauguration while we were here reviewing the country as a potential retirement home in February - March 2010. In the end we did not go as the US harridan Hilary Rodham Clinton turned up and ruined it for us.

Mujica over the last several months seems to be a changed man and I do wonder if he is ill. He most certainly does not seem to be in charge as the two 'Finance Ministries' shows and the Pluna fiasco was down to him in no small part trying 'to be clever' and demonstrating nothing of the sort.

He is of course 78 May next and might be suffering from the onset of Alzheimer's in the same way as Ronald Reagan did and in consequence made several whacky statements in his final Presidency.

Say you to that to your British governors, because the the laws of that country, especially after 1982, the kelpers are automatically considered British . This gave him reason to Argentina had always claimed that the kelpers were British (in Argentine territory) and Britain denied it.
Besides nationality depends on the laws of the countries.
For example in most of Europe governs the Law of Blood, so if I, an Argentine, I have children in Italy (without Italian citizenship) the children are not Italian and as not born in Argentina, nor are Argentine, ie are stateless.
In Argentina recognizes the Right of Soil, therefore, if an alien has children in Argentina, these children are Argentines.
So it is not so simple thing.
For that reason, for my country, those born in the islands are Argentines.

We have been waiting for a statesmanlike correction and apology from Uruguay's President.

The absence of such a statement speaks volumes and leads me to believe that Sr Mujica, once a man who I respected because he trod a difficult path with astute care, has become too infirm to lead his country with the confidence of his people.

    I repeat: I understand perfectly.
Argentina always said kelpers were British (implanted) and Britain denied it systematically:
British Nationality Act 1981: those born in British dependent territories, are not British.
After the Falklands war of 1982, was repeated ad nauseum “the wishes of the islanders are paramount” as a result came:
British Nationality Act 1983: those born in the Falklands are British citizens, if their father or mother is a British citizen or resident in the Islands.
Its people are no different from those of the metropolis.
Britain that had gone to war hypocritically defending the desires of its occupants, gave reason to Argentina.
In 2002 came the automatic citizenship to British overseas territories and the Falklands, automatically.
So, better get British feeling just (106 golfcronie). There are not a different people from the metropolis, a group of British can not be judges and party to a conflict between two nations.

Are you saying the Falklanders cannot be 'judges between UK and Argentina??

Of course not. They are one of the principle parties.
However, nobody be a judge over them either.

The Falklanders can chose any path they like.
They do not have to chose between UK or Argentina.
They can choose to have a 'close liason' with any entity they choose, or complete Independence.

The UN cannot impose a government on them, and neither can Argentina.

    Case closed.

    @128 José M again,

How can you post twice in a row? Do you have two accounts whose names can be switched????

Was it not clear enough in your mind that you can't make a proper argument or link together specific source material to prove your point?

Nobody else is talking about the “election”( actually a referendum, a different thing ), in the Falklands.
What has your clown of a foreign minister being doing, and all the Argie trolls on MercoPress. I suppose it could not be called a proper referendum as contrary to Argie rules, no one was bribed to vote.
Who says that homes will taxed if underutilized.?
You have willfully misunderstood the concept.
No one who owns their own homes will be taxed on anything, read it a bit more carefully instead of the usual superficial way Argie supporters pick up half truths and propagate them as gospel, eg The Falklands belong to Argentina ,what a piece of nonsense.
The whole world knows that they are a BOT, even the population and govt. of Argentina. As THEY are a society of kleptomaniacs, THEY like stealing things--money from bondholders , land from the indigenous population and anything else that is not screwed down !
As to not owning our own homes, there is a 69% home ownership in the UK and we rank 13th in the world stats.
Argentina comes nowhere on the list as I suppose living under bridges or cardboard boxes does not count.
Ossified Type 45 destroyers --and the Argentine Navy consists of what ? Clapped out vessels that either cannot put to sea or sink in harbour.
To end with a conciliatory note, it matters not what you or your govt. say, you are absolutely powerless to do anything except whine until you give everyone tinitus and then they cannot hear what you say.
Thank you for your concern but we have something to be thankful for, it could be a lot worse, imagine the misfortune of being Argentinian !!!!!!!!!!!!!

@73 Uruguay suffers from some major problems. For a start, it's right next to argieland. Then, it let's argies in. It can't help suffering contagion.
@84 What's your problem? Let's see if I can clarify for you. When, and IF, there is a comment from someone we give a TOSS about, we MAY listen. There are only 1 or 2 states in South America that come in that category. Uruguay and argieland don't. And nobody gets to INSIST to us. Especially for NON-BINDING resolutions.
@96 You're quite right. “Only” the minister of foreign affairs of a tiny little insignificant country that is rapidly moving to becoming “tinpot”.

Would be interesting to see what they would say if they were connected to the mains, how long they would maintain their fictions. Maybe need for a spanish type inquistion to test their beliefs? Something they should be at home with since they have vivid memories going back so many years, 1830 is like yesterday; a few hundred years more would be like last year? Since this guy thinks that Germany is next door neighbour he better get worried in his crazy world incase they come after him. WHY CAN'T WE DO THE SAME?.
I Heard of the news last week that president from bolivia evo morales decided to demand chile, in relation to it's claim for acceding to the sea.
Many people in this forum know what i think about the idea of discussing the malvinas-falkland cause before the court. In fact, i debated i different oportunities with some people about arg.'s proposals of arbitration, and about the u. k.'s idea of discussing just the cases of the dependencies from the islands, s. georgia and sandwich in 1947.
During my investigations about the historic and the legal aspects of this conflict in 2010, i had an interview with an ex professor of public international right from u. b. a. (university from buenos aires), and i asked her wether she thought that taking the case to the i. c. j. was a good idea, and she answered me she agreeded on that step.
However after 1947 there wasn't any other proposal of arbitration by none of the two countries. I have always thought that if none of the two parts proposes to give that step, is because perhaps neather arg. nor the u. k. are sure of getting a positive result if the case is discussed before the court.
Anyway, beyond my thought, and beyond the omissions of governments, i think that we all should wonder why can't we do the same than bolivia.
I think it's the only one way to finish with the u. k.'s hypocresy, every time it asks for the application of the right to self determination for this case, when that right actually has never been applied for this case by the u. n., as it was for other colnial situations, due to this cause has always been considered like a special colonial situation by the d. c. from the u. n.
It's obvious and expectable that both governments tell just what is convenient for them, in reference to the historic and the legal aspects of this conflict, but we all must be more intelligent, instead of buying so easily their propoganda, like many people in this forum do.

    You're flogging a dead horse.

Why would Britain take anything to the ICJ??

The Islanders already have possession of their islands and their homes, and have had continuous sovereignty for 200 years. They are quite happy with that.

If Argentina wishes to discuss Sovereignty, they can talk to the Falklanders, and have been invited to do so, very openly and publically.
    Argentina declined.

If Argentina thinks they have a legal case for Sovereignty of the Fslklands, they can start an action with the ICJ.
    Argentina continues to decline.

Axel, Britsin and the Falklands have no cause to do *anything*.

    It is up to Argentina.

BTW, no matter how much you “study the situation”, or how many times you ask for action from Britain, the answer will always be the same - “talk to the Falkland Island inhabitants”.

    You refuse to do that.

Which one are you this time? Sussie, or an alter ego.
As far as WE are concerned, an American is a native of the USA !! The United States of AMERICA !
When the President of the USA makes a speech, he says “My fellow AMERICANS ”. He means the USA only !
We then have Mexico to the South and Canada to the North. I am sure the would not refer to themselves as Americans.
We then have Central America and then the South American continent. Would a Brasilian or Argentinian call themselves American? I think not.
They way you write has a Hispanic/Latino connotation as if it was NOT your primary language.
“Remember what is said!” That is too ambiguous a phrase to mean anything. Do you mean remember what I say ? or remember what is said--about what ? Confusing isn't it.

    TROY.
I typed my comment in 4 articles because i wanted to have a serious debate with many people, i don't know what spam is, what i wanted to do is to talk to many people.
On the other hand, you accuse me of repeating erroneous concepts, however, my arguments are based on objetive facts, that's why i recommended you and many others to search in the news archive of this website what was expressed by the president from the d. c. from the u. n., when he explained the reasons why self determination can't be applied to this case, in fact, he refred to this question again, a few days before the referendum. However, if some of you prefer to invalid what he said, as some of you did, it's your problem, but the most important that the lack of intellectual honesty of some of you won't change in anything the legal situation of this conflict.
On the other hand, many of you accuse argentina of pretending just one outcome, which according to the interpretation of many people in this forum, arg. would accept the islands to be under argentine sovereignty only, but at the same time, many of you defend the posture of the govt. from the islands, every time they manifest that they would be disposed to discuss about different issues with arg., but not about the sovereignty, which is the main problem, isn't it pretending just one outcome too?, of course it is, and you all now it.
Anyway, as i said in another comment, wether you agree or not on what i think about this question, is absoluty irrelevant for me, because everybody have right to think whatever they want, however, there is something which is much more important than anybody's opinion, i mean objetive facts, and like it or not, they show that this case has strong and weak aspects for both nations.

I beg to differ. In the UK an American refers to a citizen of the USA. We would never call a Canadian an American just as we would not call an American a Canadian. Similarly we would use the word Mexican, Brazilian, Argentinian to denote citizens from these countries.
Whether you agree or not, the epithet American means ONLY a citizen of the USA to the English speaking world.
It's not only Obama, to my knowledge every President of the USA has used this phrase in their speeches and they are referring to the USA ONLY.

Let me add, as a visitor from Canada to the UK, in the late 60's, people might say, “ oh, you're visiting from 'America', but never ”you're American“.

”America“ was strictly the North American continent, and certainly distinct from ”South America“ or ”Central America“ or ”Mexico“.

I was called a ”Canadian” ( though I am still British with UK Passport). Some were confused by my accent, and many wondered why I did not speak French.
Certainly, as someone from “America”, they did not expect me to speak Spanish!!

“Sussie ” and the rest of the South Americans, can call themselves whatever they like, but to the UK Brits, the Canadians, the USA themselves, even Cuba, and perhaps Mexico, the only ones referred to as “Americans” are the USA residents.

In my experience, most new immigrants are very quick to proudly claim they are “Americans” as soon as they get citizenship, including Cubans!!

It is an 'exclusive club' to belong to, and something to brag about to their new peers and to those still wanting to emigrate.

“Sussie” is a glaring example - a narcissist, he makes many gratuitous declarations that he lives in the US and implies that he is a citizen, enjoying all the material benefits of that society.

However, as a US resident, he has many very strange political positions and does not speak as someone who is a legitimate member of that society.

At most, I suspect he visited once, and has failed in his aspiration to move there.

    Bitter. Frustrated. Argentine.

    :-(

Both me and my partner are proud to say that 'The Americas' is part of our C.V. Me by migration, her by birth.

It has always struck me as strangely lax that the 50 or so nations of the Americas should allow one nation to appropriate their American-ness.

A citizen of the the USA is no more of an American than an Argentinian.

    TROY TOMPEST.
My opinions are always based on objetive facts, not on seculations. You and evereybody else can agree or not on what i think, in fact, everybody have right to think whatever, but what always prevaills is the reality.
On the other hand, if i weren't cricti of some aspects that involve our government, in reference to the historic and the legal aspects of this conflict, i just would take into account what our official history says about it, and what our politicians manifest in different international forums, however you and all the rest of the forists know what i think about these two issues.
Beside, if i believed in our official history, i wouldn't investigate absolutly anything.
You and some other forists accuse me of repeating propaganda, however neather you nor many other people in this forum have never criticised absolutly anything in relation to the postures of the governments from the u. k., and from the islands.
If you and all the rest of the forists think that just our politcians omit information in reference to the historic andthe legal aspects of this conflict, then i recommend you again that you should rethink about who is actually repeating propaganda.

    @Axel
No matter how much you bleat“ we must talk”, you continue to refuse to do it when you are offered the opportunity.

There is no more to discuss about that.

    You have “investigated”?
    Investigated what??

    What exactly are your conclusions?
Show us some articles to support your position, whatever it is.

You ask us to “admit” we were wrong or made mistakes. What mistakes, specifically?

Until then, your posts are meaningless.

The UK has no reason to talk to you, and you will not talk to the Falklanders.

The French have a more valid claim than Argentina, the Islands were called Malvinas by the French. Argentinas claim only resurfaced after WW2 when the UK was giving back lands and really it is just Argentina trying it on. It doesnt matter who wants to own the islands the modern world gives people rights and they dont want anything to do with Argentina, the fact is at no point in time have the islands been part of argentina and I doubt many argentines would what to live there anyway. Wasnt also the USA who sent a ship to get rid of some argentines on them? Clearly the USA at that time didnt think you should have been there.
It also makes me laugh when some of these statesmen come out saying “UK empire” etc etc when they are clearly of WHITE EUROPEAN descent, the hypocrisy is unreal!
