Their position is hardly suprising though, given that they are the cultural decendants of Castile, who found the idea of Muslims living in Iberia intolerable.
Latin and American - contradicting terms for anyone claiming to be indigenous to label themselves...and if they are not indigenous, then they are hypocrites
I would not get too derogatory of Uruguay btw - this is merely the public statement of one minister, hardly the feeling of the Nation or, indeed, its Government's official position away from the shine reflecting from Timmerman's pate.

For many years, Chileans have regarded themselves as the British of South America...the most businesslike, professional and least corrupt society within Latin America.
Today, many Latin countries would benefit from treating the Falkland Islands as a role model for good governance....with the exception of Chile (Brazil and particularly, Columbia have made some progress in recent times, and perhaps Costa Rica and Panama in Central America), most Latin American countries are still poorly governed and their populations suffer accordingly.But let's not talk about poor governance....Malvinistas and other bigoted Latin fools....just keep sprouting your usual anti-colonial rhetoric.....as for Uruguay....grow a backbone and stand up to Argentina for a change....if you were smart, you'd seek closer relations with Britain and America, along with Chile and Colombia, and by doing so, you'd be better able to stand up to Argentina.
One thing though, well done again to the two Uruguayan politicians who did show some intestinal fortitude and participated as observers in the Falklands referendum.

Sorry, I forgot it wasn't Argentina that invaded the Falkland Islands in 1982 it was the “junta” and wasn't supported by a single Argentine.
You know, I first started looking at these threads because as an Irishman I was interested in modern history (actually studying it at uni) and I have to say that the continual whining, lying and exaggeration by the Argentine government and trolls has pushed me firmly into Britain's (and the Falkland Islanders) corner.
What is it exactly thet Argentina expects to achieve? Is their theory that if they keep acting like children Britain and the FI will get bored and just give up? or what?
If this is the case then they obviosly don't know the Brits.
Come on Malvinistas and other fellow travellers, speak up.....Spain should surrender Cueta and Melilla; France should surrender French Guiana, Tahita, Martinque and new Caledonia; Netherlands should surrender the Netherlands Antilles and Chile should give up Easter Island and so on.....the so-called Decolonisation list doen't even places like Cueta and Melilla, French Guiana, Easter Island or the Netherlands Antilles.....so much for consistency with that UN Committee. It's instances like this that allow for the UN to be held up for ridicule.

Ironically, the position of the Falkland Islands in the world is more isolated after the referendum. Tea parties hosted by the British Embassy in Washington are not going to change the neutrality of the Obama Administration, which has called repeatedly for dialogue on sovereignty. The terms of the dispute are set in stone in UN Resolution 2065 (XX) Question of the Falkland Islands (1965). The islanders will have no peace until there is a settlement between Argentina and the UK.

All it does is recognize that there is a dispute over the sovereignty, and that it needs to be resolved bearing in mind resolution 1514. Of course, 1514 gives all populations the right to choose their own political status as an outcome of decolonisation - The UN is willing to accept independence, integration with a neighbouring country, integration with the colonial metropolitan country or free association with another country, as outcomes from decolonisation.

It is clear to me that you have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to the people of Uruguay and their ‘support’ for AR, because as far as I can tell it is non-existent. Do not believe everything you see in the papers.
Almagro is an ex UY Ambassador to AR and has quite obviously been turned. You only have to look at the wanabe homos in the photo to see that.
The Defence Minister of all 7,000 officers and men of the UY standing 'army' is the very best friend of Pepe, the soon to be gone President: himself a commie and gangster and even though he is no friend of TMBOA he is too weak to improve the position of his own country.
All of my Uruguayan friends and that is quite a few now, despair at the antics of Pepe and his wife and cannot wait for him to be gone.
There is evidence that the forthcoming president is already ‘sitting’ with Pepe to make sure as far as possible things are done correctly.
As for selling the Embassy that is counterproductive to the stated UK diplomatic aims of building up relationships and business in SA.
The whole thing sounds like a euphemism for ethnic cleansing against the “Anglo” presence. Let's call a spade a spade and call it what it is.

But wasn't Rosas your dictator at the time? Didn't he start the first “Conquest of the Desert” genocide? By 1845, wasn't Rosas occupying Uruguayan territory? Weren't the hostilities started by the Italian, Garibaldi? Wasn't Rosas seeking to control trade with cities upstream for his own benefit? All of these events are recorded. And they don't match your contention. So shall we say that you are “mistaken”, or that you are lying?

SLR fired a 7.62 round, big heavy round, 20 rounds to a Mag. Average infantry soldier carried 6 too 8 mags. SLR meas, self loading rifle, a semi automatic rifle, one press of the trigger one round, no automatic fire. Derived from the Belgian FN, exactly the same rifle only automatic. Squeeze the trigger and it fires until you remove your finger from the trigger. Sounds good, gut you need a lot of ammo and unless you're strong, 7 out of 10 of your rounds are for the birds. Big heavy round no movie shit here, hide behind 18' of brick it will go ithrough it and take your arm off.

The rifle is both automatic and semi automatic, though trained infantrymen only use automatic fire, when they close with the enemy in the final phase of an assault.
The 7.62 was a heavy ballistic round, it blew it's through flesh. The 5.56 is an aerodynamic round, it tumbles though flesh and does more damage.

l have fired them also & love them but they do get too heavy for me after a while.
l would have liked a bipod to hold the barrel up when firing prone, but of course that would just add to the weight when carrying the darling of a thing.
Haven't fired an SA80 yet.
ln New Guinea l had a chinese SKS assault rifle & a Brno .22.
Love the smell of gun oil!

That was in the 1960's, I loved and was proud of my dad, just as I love and am proud of all the guys and girls today.

The SS109 NATO round (5.56 ball) used by the Brits and other NATO armies does not tumble in a SA80. The round is puny enough as it is without the extra energy loss of tumbling on the way to the target.
The 0.223 Remington is the (almost) direct equivalent and the NATO round was developed from it but with a longer bullet holding area (neck) for the heavier military bullet. This gives problems when firing 5.56 in 0.223 rifles. I prefer RG 5.56 cases and always had to trim back the neck to fit the chamber of my vermin and fox rifle to eliminate the possibility of excess throat erosion (the rifle, not me :o) ).
It must be remembered that the military top brass do not want the enemy killed in the normal course of warfare. Wounded combatants take up extra resources, so the 5.56 fits straight in.

the SLR was a beast of a rifle, personally i hated it over the SA80 in so far as the SA80 was lighter, you could carry more ammo and, more importantly for me, I could hit stuff with it!

Asking the UK to honour 2065 is like Hitler asking Chamberlain to honour the 1938 Munich agreement in 1939 after he had invaded Poland. Hence, there is no requirement for anyone in the UK government to sit down and discuss the sovereignty of the Falklands.
Also, the Falkland islanders do have the right to self-detemination under the UN Charter and General Assembly resolution 1514(XV) which states, 'All peoples have the right to self-determination; by virtue of that right they freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development.' Unfortunately for Argentina, this RIGHT IS NOT QUALIFIED AND ATTEMPTS TO QUALIFY IT WITHIN THE UN HAVE BEEN REJECTED.

I only read the electronic versions of the papers and, for a while, contributed to a government blog site with constructively critical posts. This was fine until the Pluna affair and the moderator did not like what I said (which was completely truthful) and they chucked me off and cancelled my details!
The Uruguayo are a very laid back people until they get worked up. They will get worked up for the elections and that will be the end of it.

technically i live below the European Poverty Line because i cannot afford one foreign holiday a year and my TV is under 42 inches in screen size... only own 1 car (even if its new) and have fewer bedrooms in the house than people who live there.

On the plus side we aint going to run out of LNG this year (unlike Argentina)... also on the plus side i can get USD$ whenever i like, dont need to explain to anybody why or where I am going on holiday, have free health care and employ a trio of Argentines who are just grateful to be outside of Argentina, even if they do have to post money back home every month to help their families get through day-to-day hardships... like finding a food store with fully stocked shelves that they can afford.
I guess they are religious, I never asked, so they could repent - presumably. Me? I am an atheist, so not only couldn't I repent, but I dont think that talking to 'Mr Invisible-in-the-sky-Person' is going to help out with the Nation's economic problems.
Good luck to those who do...but I wont be holding my breath. ;-0

This isn't about what the UK or Argentina wants. It's about us, the Falkland Islanders, and our right to live unmolested under the government of our choosing. You have never provided a shred of evidence that the UN doesn't recognise our right not to be subjugated.
This isn't propaganda. And your easy dismisal of us is a perfect illustration of everything that's wrong with you, and your government, and your ludicrous 200 year old tantrum.
What's necessary is for you to wonder what you would do with a population that really don't want you, with a society, economy, legal and political system that has been nearly two centuries in the making.
Actually, I think I know what you would do with us. There are precedents, and you don't need to look too far back to find them.

I have always expected to have a serious debate, but i realize it's not easy.
I have never been interested in persuading absoluty anybody in this forum, what i just want to do, is to give my opinion, and to tell what is omitted by both governments, however wether you or anybody else take what i say, is irrelevant for me, because everybody have right to think whatever they want, but there s nothing more important than the facts.
Accept them or not, the facts show that self determination has never been applied for this case, in fact, i recommended you and many others to get into the website of the u. n., and you'll see that there is not any resolution which says: application of the right to self determination for the population from the malvinas-falkland islands. Anyway, beyond this fact, i have never denied that perhaps that right is applicable for the people from the islands, but because of the u. n's posture, i have always thought that the application of self determination for this case is hightly arguable.

There is no resolution that specifically applies the right to self determination to the Falkland Islands; there is no resolution applying that right to any of the other territories either. I have looked on the website of the UN, and that is what it says. It doesn't need to pass a resolution saying that the Falkland Islanders have the same rights as any other non-self- governing territory.
Don't give me all that stuff about a 'serious debate'. No-one can have a serious debate with you because you ignore the 'facts' if they don't support your position. All you ever do is say the same thing, over and over again.
I'll give you this advice for free; don't pin all your hopes on something the UN said fifty years ago. It's a different world now. The Secretary General of the UN said as much, quite recently.

If i were somebody who doesn't have any critic posture like you are, i just would take into account what our official history says about this conflict, and what our politicians express before the international forums. However, you already know what i think about these two issues.
On the other hand, you don't need to believe what i say, just search in the news archive from this website, what the president from the d. c. said twice in 9 months, about the reaosns why self determination is not applicable for this case, the last time he refered to this case, was at a few days before the referendum. As to Argentina imploding, I think that with their current attitude and behaviour, there is a very good chance of it happening. So you can't assume nothing about things you ignore. For example, the normal point of view of uruguayan or chilean people about argie “reclamations”.
As I wrote before, Almagro words does not represent the majority voice of the people in Uruguay. But you can be sure, people does not vote thinking in Malvinas affairs. Nowhere but Argentina (and not always).
You said that Almagro speaks for all Uruguayans, etc. Half of the population did not vote Mujica. However, in both halves you can find people supporting, rejecting or ignoring argie reclamations.
But the point remains that Almagro words and official positions are not welcomed. In fact, most of the people feel disgusted here with this kind of disrepectful and insensitive words supporting argie aggressive claims. On the contrary, in democratic countries you are free to feel and say aloud that your government, including your foreign minister, does not speak for you and for most of your countrymen. And in this case, declarations about Falkland, it's just plain obvious in Chilean and Uruguayan societies.
