“Her fuel tanks are roughly half as big as an Olympic swimming pool.”

Sort of makes you understand why french vessels are typically nuclear powered.

Isn't this just another case of us militarizing the atlantic?

How long before we hear the bleating from BA

@2 eh? The only french surface vessel which is nuclear powered is the carrier, which has had a horrendous amount of problems and proved so expensive they couldn't build a second as originally plannned. Even the Americans, who have flirted with nuclear on non-CV surface ships, decided it wasn't worth it.

    Devilish in its cunning,
the Royal Navy are likening their missiles to Telephone Boxes.
Little do the secret listeners know that the RN are camouflaging its 'Telephone Boxes' as missiles.
With an o so familiar radiophonics acoustic, these WMDs can appear out of thin air .... anywhere!

    Be afraid, be very afraid.

More awesome British engineering to be proud of!

A truly brilliant warship with an astonishing set of capabilities that can turn a whole area into a no-fly zone.

And why do we need this level of military capability? To remind aggressive countries like Argentina of our ability to impose our will on them should they have any ideas like back in '82....

These vessels seem ideal for future operations to defend our South Atlantic territories and maritime space. Nicely in time for when the oil starts flowing.

And here we have the real deciding factor of who do and will continue to make the decisions in the South Atlantic. Everything else is just nonsense. The Falklands can look forward to a long and prosperous future with our new generation of warships protecting them.

Your friend sounds like he has some business sense, very few of the old red boxes around now, you still find them in rural areas, in out of the way places. They have however become a fashionable accessory, believe it or not? In gardens.

Do hope that Timerman does not stand up in the UN and accuse the British of having disguised missile silos in Stanley! Given his previous military intelligence briefings, that is not as far fetched as it sounds!

My understanding is that HMS DUNCAN will be carrying out sea trials near the FALKLANDS with live missile practice. Perhaps THINK can tell us the coordinates of his house and we could put a telephone box in his back garden. ( within a metre or so )

How many missiles do these destroyers carry?

If they run out of missiles, what else do these destroyers have on board?

    Mach 2 in 10 seconds.

Question should be, how many aircraft do the enemy want to send against the destroyer? Not the battle of British you know? Single figures, not tens!
    Those days are long gone!

She is beautiful isn't she? Always found that funny, calling ships male names but referring to them as “She” oh well........

YES!! HMS Duncan is as deadly as she is beautiful and we are VERY, VERY glad that she is on our side..... It's just a pity that there is only 6 of them.

    @30
One type 45 destroyer can track and engage more targets than 5 type 42 destroyers operating together. Argentina has 13 mirage jets operating with 1960's technology, I very doubt all of them are operational.
This ship, in a very sobering way, puts the whole issue of the Falklands completely in perspective. If Argentina and any other tin pot country in South America decided to do something stupid, they would be looking at a complete and entire wipe out of their entire airforce.
Puts it all into perspective nicely.

    It sees that the M.O.D.
And the government are in talks with the Australians,
About future type 26=and future subs,

Apparently with all the combined alliances with European countries over previous military projects,
    And present projects including planes,
And the failure of most European nation to complete the orders or pulling out,
The British have decided to turn to true friends to build the next generation of ships and subs,

    Sounds good to me.

Bush Pilot- they can launch all 48 sea viper missiles in a few seconds or one at a time or as many as needed - Now who has 50 plus aircraft they could launch an air attack with at the same time? Even if a Country did - how would the pilots be feeling?
I would be having “tecnical problems” and returning to base!

Yes the Cruise missiles were not fitted at construction- to save costs - now the RN and the Govt relaise it was a silly thing to do as they are not fully equipped destroyers - so guess what - in true British style - they will be fitted as each one comes in for first refit - and it will now cost twice as much instead!

The sea viper is a much more sophisticated than the previous generation of weapons and the massive radar on the type 45 helps.
The destroyer could be fitted with a maximum of 72 sea viper or a mixture of sea ceptor which are short ranged taking the number of missiles over a 100.

So, it would be difficult or impossible for an air attack to disable this ship.

Can it defend itself against a missile attack? What if it an agressor launched several missiles at it? What would the Type 45 do for that?

    @38
The ship can use the short range Aster 15 version of Sea Viper to shoot down incoming anti-ship missiles, however this would be considered a waste and so the ship carries the latest B version of the Phalanx close in weapon system, which has distinguished itself on many occasions and is regarded as the best CIWS in the world.

That tall tower is somewhat reminiscent of Japanese WW2 warships, but the difference is they had scores of warships and we have just 6. The defence budget is always the first to get hit in cutbacks, unlike the foreign aid which is always being expanded without any genuine and fulsome thanks from the beneficiaries. Maybe they should direct some of it Argentina's way and see what results of that..?
