Millionaire businessman Horacio Cartes won Paraguay's Sunday presidential election, returning the powerful centre-right Colorado Party to power after a brief spell started in 2008 ended in impeachment last year. Cartes won with a 9 or 10 percentage point lead over Efrain Alegre of the ruling Liberal Party, the head of the country's electoral tribunal said. Read full article

    Self-made millionaire, not landed aristocrat.

This is a new start for Paraguay kicking out the dead hand and corrupted Lugo party.

I wish this man and Paraguay well for the future.

Now if only AR would stop with the Peronista nonsense.

This guy is bad news for Paraguay. However Maduro is still bad news for Venezuela. And CFK , the luxury hotel and NYC penthouse owning 'woman of the people' and her fellow money laundering uber rich cronies are bad news for Argentina.

Greed isnt ideological its a part human nature

Why is 'this guy is bad news for Paraguay', because he is a self made millionaire?

At least he has made his money and not robbed Paraguay for it.

Or are you against anyone with 'money'?

I'm not against money but I am against people whose prime rasion detre is to make and keep making money. Nobody gets filthy rich or even rich without exploitation happening along the line be it people or the environment. The richer you get the more involved you are with trying to influence politics to serve your business money making needs. It happens every single time. Like I say it makes no difference which ideology people belong to or purport to belong to its about greed and having more than others. In other words its about inequality and all the associated problems that go with it.

This guy is no better than CFK et al. He is clearly dodgy.

TMBOA is a failed lawyer; her husband was a crook of the highest order stealing money directly from the people.

The so called AR government is highly corrupt and a disgrace to the AR people who are not Peronista.

If you think in any way that Cartes has made his money the same way and is therefore 'clearly dodgy' then please provide the evidence because I just cannot see it.

But it may be because insofar as it goes, I am a self-made man. My parents were labourers but I was lucky in that I earned a Technical Apprenticeship that made me into a Professional Engineer. I worked bloody hard at improving my position, held a Directorship in the UKs No1 electrical conglomerate and eventually started my own businesses. The harder I worked and the smarter I saw opportunities the wealthier I became. Perhaps you should try it yourself.

“ Nobody gets filthy rich or even rich without exploitation happening along the line be it people or the environment.”

hat statement is a load of bullshit. There are 17year old kids in the USA that are now billionaires because og computer genius and internet savvy. Facebook wiz, phone app creators that sold their apps to Iphone. Don't use such a wide brush.

Chris, nasty nestor use to put the screws to people behind in their mortgages then when he evicted and foreclosed on them, he bought them for pennies on a dollar. He was the typicalc scumbag lawyer is thought to be. HE created poverty and homelessness and then cried for Argentina as president. Now he rests in hell with Chubby....one by one all those corrucpt bastards will die young.

5 Chris R . Like your reply . I assume somebody will now say Sir Richard Branson should not have made do much money . The problem here is that a right of centre candidate won in an area ruled by leftish misfits . Those who consider that a free press is bad or that the practical is above the law .

The fact this guy is a political novice, if most probably a greedy one as Tobers says, is probably the only hope here; the Colorado Party itself is a sink of crypto-fascist and gangsterist backwardness, so I hope he'll pay more attention to his presidential colleagues than his “party comrades”! How did the Lugoist left do btw?

    He's a narcotrafficking, smuggling homophobe.
You had plenty of goes at Maduro for being a bus driver.

Seems Cartes' CV fits you better...

#9 Interesting and depressing. Do you think Cristina was a bit too fulsome conciliatory in her congratulations then? I'm preferring Dilma's bad cop role in this one I must say!

Be it the USA, UK or even SA, good politicians can find common ground and make compromise even with opposing parties when they put country first. Apparently in SA when you are a moderate or even conservative, you are EVIL. But that is only people here....the trolls that do not live in SA, not actual South Americans.

I have to agree with you. When the ruling party and the opposing parties put the well-being of the country and its citizen first, you can find common ground and act accordingly.
Unfortunately, in many cases, politicians are more interested in money and power at the expense of the citizens.

It's true that in many cases, people gain money in “dodgy” ways. However, I want to believe that not all are alike and some people still believe in ethics and does not have to step on anyone's head to be rich.

I really don't know anything about Cartes, so I will only say good luck to Paraguay, hope it's a turn for the best. Paraguay is a beautiful country and deserves a good President.

I would not refer to him as a homophobe as he is religious and religious people are against homosexuality. When the indoctination of the churchs change, so will the attitude toward homosexuality. The real issue Chris is that he is rich and steverina believes no one should be allowed to be rich.....except kirchners and policiticans of course.
He already spewed off his manifesto to ....mmmmm, I forget his name, the engineer from Paraguay. He should have been working for himanity not himself and his family. All rich people exploit and abuse the earth. I think his cerebellum is a few ounces (grams) lighter than most others.

Note. He was never charged for that plane full of narcotics being loaded on his property, but that's just because he is a Paraguayan with cash.

    @15 Stevie

Sorry for the delay, but I HAVE read those links and here is my summary:

Smuggler – No evidence of collusion by Cartes with the buyers of his cigarettes who smuggled them to Brasil.

Homophobe – maybe, but some of us think you have nothing to shout about with your treatment of Anglotino.

Narco-trafficking - Note. He was never charged for that plane full of narcotics being loaded on his property, but that's just because he is a Paraguayan with cash
OR he could be innocent. He has many ranches and it was only a small plane: how would he know?

    Money-laundering – no evidence again.

The BBC have major problems in their own organisation: Jimmy Saville, lies about global warming, favouring a particular political party which is clearly against their Charter, etc.

I would most certainly privatise the BBC and drop the licence fee which everyone with a TV has to pay for even though they never watch it (sounds like TMBOA trick that, don’t you think).

    @19

Would this Bolivian leftie be convicted / indicted for corruption in office?

Or just a poor wanabe grafter?

But in reality NO because he / she wouuld be a commie lefty just like you and Stevie.

All you lot want to do is take money from anybody who has it and after taking your 'costs' out of it give it to the 'poor'.

Not provide REAL jobs because the illiterates would not be able to hold them down. But why didn't they have a good education? Ah, there was no money because it was in the pockets of the lefties or frittered away.
