Wow, I've just found something new! I don't usually spend a lot of time checking on airlines but, in Wikipedia, it's the first time I've seen “accidents and incidents” as a separate article. Guess who. Aerolineas Argentinas! The article lists 32 “incidents” between 1950 and 1999. Did they stop reporting them after that?

It's fair to remember that Buenos Aires refuses to contact the appropriate authorities for authorisation to fly to the Falkland Islands. The appropriate authorities being the Falkland Islands Government!
Moreover, it would be for the Falkland Islands Government to agree use of a “white card” for argie nationals.
Also, the status of the Islands has changed since 1971/2. Back then, the UK government could make such agreements. Now it can't.
Why is it that argies are always so far behind?

To summarise, a few Argentinians get into a yacht and sail for the Malvinas. Due to faulty navigation, they arrive at the Falklands. They talk a lot,(in Spanish), flashbacks to the war, a few songs are sung, and then they come back. Some nice shots of dolphins. I admit that I did not watch the full 57 minutes but I had other things to do.
Maybe you can tell us what it was all about ?
In any other civilised country jerks like him would be locked up. Ah, but it is Argentina!

This guy admits terrorist actions that his government do nothing about, which in turn he take to be a sanction from his government.
How exactly does this fit in with UN GA resolutions on the matter? After all, most of the Argentineans on this site seem to think UN GA resolutions are law. Does that mean he takes lack of action by the UN as approval of these methods?
How is anything he is doing acting in the interests of the Islanders?
If the FIG is illegitimate, than what would he think that would make any Argentinean governance? 250 miles of water between the Falklands and Argentina means the UN should not recognise any vote where the Islanders vote was swamped by trying to include it in some part of mainland South America, and any Argentinean population planted onto the islands without Islanders controlling immigration would equally go against UN documented opinion on recognised democracy.
These muppets really need to wake up.

Also it seems now the Argentine government is planning to go ahead with an extensive proposal. From the press: An Argentine government spokesperson elaborated that Aerolineas Argentinas would be acquiring three Tupolev 154 modern aircraft to service the route. With a cruising speed of 975 kilometres per hour (606 mph), the Tu-154 is one of the fastest civilian aircraft in operation and has a range of 5,280 kilometres (3,280 mi). Capable of operating from unpaved and gravel airfields, it was widely used in extreme Arctic conditions where other airliners were unable to operate and where service facilities were very basic.
Alicia Castro, Ambassador to the United Kingdom in a post meeting conference, also mentioned that current plans of Aerolineas Argentinas will eventually include a connecting non-stop flight from Buenos Aries to London via a new proposed fleet of Tupovev 404 jumbo airliners to facilitate easier and timely access for passengers originating and arriving at Mount Pleasant. The changeover to an exclusive Tupolev fleet for Aerolineas Argentinas is part of the current government’s strategy to offset trade swap in goods instead of depending on obtaining international credit allowing for a complete modernization of the fleet. The TU154 connecting with the forth coming TU404 service will prove that Argentina is committed to its territorial inhabitants best needs and remains serious about its promises for a peaceful solution with an opportunity to improve communications and the quality of life to the Islanders.
I don't know if eliminating service from LAN Chile is a good idea, but the Argentines seem sincere... Plus, maybe this is the time to give CFK another chance to show that she only has the islander's best interests at heart.

Then Argentina would have the Falklands by the thrat as regards external communications - and sorry but those bastards had us by the throut for a while until 14th June 1982 - and NEVER again that mistake!
Secondly- Arg states that the Islands Government does not exist. In order for AN aitline to fly here from ANYWHERE in the world they have to approach and talk to and do business with and comply with- and thus recognise the existence of - Falkland Islands Govt Dept of Civil Aviation - this organisation is responsible for who and how flies here etc - nothing to do with London.
Somehow I think an Arg State owned airline will have a few little problems to overcome there?
Then landing etc - said airline is going to have to communicate with and accept the standards of the the Royal AirForce at MPA - as they own the runway and they decide whose aircraft is safely insured and meets correct Int Safety Standards to land on it - as it is the RAF who would have to scrape the mess up afterwards!
Yet another problem for an Arg State owned airline!
Passports - again NOTHING to do with London - Passport control and immigration regulations are 100% controlled and regulated by Falkland Islands Govt Immigration and Customs.
There will be lots of pigs and cows flying around the moon and somersaulting in the sky before an Arg State owned airline flies to the Falklands!

The Tupolev 404 remains an unfulfilled concept for 1,200 passengers with a canard wing design. I cannot find any evidence of one ever being built or flown. First, the T-154 has a solid proven track record for reliability under some of the harshest weather conditions on earth. Used in a number of countries, Its ability to land on unpaved and gravel airfields allows it the flexibility to make emergency landings at a number of alternative airports. Plus I understand these planes have been completely refurbished. Regarding the T- 404, you need to be reminded that any new aircraft needs to be ordered well in advance and Ambassador Castro did say in the future. Face it Clyde, your erroneous information is about as reliable as the IMF's assesment of what actual inflation is in Latin America. Anyway, the T- 154 has several important advantages, such as it can be acquired using an offset trade swap instead of attempting to obtain international credit and it's highly doubtful the aircraft would be a target of asset seizures. You can't say that about most commercial aircraft.

From what I understand José, your Peronist dreams are coming true as indeed it would undeed be Aerolíneas Argentinas and the Government would issue complementary citizenship to all legitimate inhabitants of the islands. Therefore All Argentinians would be allowed to use the white card, and only foreigners would be required to use a passport. (Chileans and other residents of other Latin countries of course could use their national identification cards.)

Chris, there are still a large number of airlines still using reliable versions of the Tu-154.
Unemployed idiots are everywhere and this is not the exemption, with all the problems that Argentina has, there are still some mental handicapped guys thinking that a fourth class airline ( AA ) will be able to run a weekly flight to Stanley instead a first class one .

The misinformed doubters of the the new Tu-404s don't seem to get it through their thick heads that the Argentinian economy will be again one of the world's greatest and at that time, AA will be in the financial position to purchase the new super jumbo.
Also, just because its not being openly publicized, doesn't mean it's not in it's final development stages. Even Boeing is secretly working to develop a new cunard airliner similar to the Tu-404 concept and keeping their mouths shut about it.

What point were you trying to make with your comments about Castro's wild proposal?
For a start, the aircraft you talk about are highly questionable - the aging and perhaps dangerous AA T-154's and then the entirely speculative 404's !!
The whole package sounds like a fantasy - and it's being out forward combined with a highly suspect pledge from a hostile government that is waging state-sponsored terrorism against other commercial carriers and British Commonwealth vessels with a publically stated goal of undermining or crippling the economy and viability of the Falklands.
I suppose we are being unreasonable...

This was news regarding a prototype being conceived around 2001, it was shelved in 2002.

WHO at the UN made a verbal and written off to the Arg President to sit down across the table from her Govt and start to discuss bilateral matters of mutual benfit?
Who also offerred to meet with her Foreign Minister recently in London for a 3-way meeting in the prescence of the British Foreign Minister?
When people who are on opposite side want to talk and communicate in a peaceful manner - you start talks with matter of mutual interest in areas where you are likley to be able to find agreement - as a means of Breaking-the-Ice and to at least start to try and build confidence and trust - both of which Arg has worked hard to succcessfully destroy since 2002.
Trouble is Arg has not the faintest clue about how to carry out Diplomacy.
I've got to support chicureo here. The TU-154 is without a shadow of a doubt the best aeroplane you can swap agricultural produce for, while the 404 is known for having inspired the most common error message on the Internet.

#66 Troy, both you and several others question the viability of older aircraft, but I would remind you that there are several “outdated” airframes that are still considered very reliable. Air Koryo has been using the Tu-154 as the backbone of its fleet for decades! By the way, your direct service from the UK has been using old Lockheed TriStars that first flew over 43 years ago and were originally owned by PanAm.

Perhaps you know more than me about the metallurgy of aircraft metals and the fatigue problems brought about by the reversal stresses on takeoff and landings, not to mention the hoop stress reversals on the fuselage due to pressurised cabins. Who knows, you just might. :o)

@45 Impractical you say. Why? Take a look at the LAN Chile fleet. As of the latest info, the average age of its aircraft is around 5 years. Nice, modern, up-to-date aircraft. All the Airbus aircraft in the A320 “family” have a range around 3,700 miles, whilst the Airbus A340-300 has a range of 8,500 miles. Whilst Boeing ranges are between 7,000 and 10,000 miles. Now look at a map and tell me why a flight couldn't go around. Also, if you do some research, you'll find that the Tu154 is a very OLD aircraft. So old that Aeroflot have retired it. And the TU404. The only aircraft I can find with that designation were a super jumb0 designed to carry around 1,200 passengers, it only got as far as being a “concept”. and a fake. Just think about it. The largest airliner in the world, the Airbus A380, has a maximum capacity of 853 passengers. And airliners have to meet certain criteria. For instance, they have to fit on taxiways, without hitting nearby buildings and other aircraft. The have to be able to use boarding tubes (jetways). No, your Tu404 is pie in the sky. Probably the Martian sky.

No I haven't personally won a Nobel Prize Stevie that is true. But my country and indeed my city has won a ton of the them, two in the last 3 years, so we have every reason to be proud and no reason to feel inferior.
I understand your envy, it must be sickening to see lists of all the positive things your enemy has contributed to the world. However, good science is collaborative and Argentina should be contributing to this as well. However, to do so you would need an education system that teaches children to question and challenge, as well as a stable funding base that can maintain a steady research output from which the big discoveries occasionally emerge. Instead Argentina teaches its children fairy stories about Las Malvinas and is attempting to economically wipe out its middle class who include the very scientists and technologists we are discussing.

It would be a shame if links were cut with South America as the Falklands long history has never been isolationist - this has been forced on them by others who prefer to believe in a myth cooked up in the 1940's.
Fortunately Chile is sensible and could still fly to MPA avoiding Arg airspace but it would require more time and fuel and risk breaking “solidarity” with its “friendly” neighbour.

Mt.Pleasant's runway is up to international standards and can take wide bodied long-haul jets.
I have not checked this out, but I believe the TU 154 would fail noise and pollution requirements at European and USA airports.
The TU 404 is a joke as far as commercial production is concerned. There is no requirement for it by any current airline
now or in the immediate future.

The Comet paid the price for being the first in its field and the lessons learned were used by other aircraft manufacturers - mainly Boeing. It led to British built airliners being being strengthened far above requirements. The VC10's airframe has a life of three times that of a Boeing 707.
As to who invented what, most inventions have been based on work and thoughts from different sources. It is a pointless argument. The best definition is who actually made it work in a practical way.

Are the 'unimaginable benefits' offered to the Islanders better than they get at the moment or unimaginably worse than what they get now?
Ie it might be unimaginably good to an Argentine that their government would pay for them to study at University in the UK , all paid for, whereas for a Falkland Islander that is a common place reality.

That is a benefit arguably, but the word 'unimaginable' conjures up the idea that the benefits are so generous that it would be difficult for the islanders to turn them down.
The islanders already have links with the outside world, so offering them the chance to have them and being held to ransom as in the 1970s does not seem particularly appealing, as their relationship with the Chilieans is preferred.

However, the price was good and although it got you from A to B, it was not a nice car to drive and very heavy on fuel.
The crunch came 3 months later, the gearbox seized when he was driving through town. This wrecked the transmission and damaged the engine beyond economic repair. His next folly was a Ford Capri - a sheep in wolves clothing. Enough said !
It was not until the Japanese built factories in the UK that build quality soared. When the first lines of Nissans were produced, they were highly sought after in Japan as they were better built than the Japanese versions.

But they seemed to residide in a garage until we could get new parts as they broke down constantly. after the UP in Chile, we had access to Japanese cars and the rest is history. The South Koreans are doing a great job as well. When I lived in America (Norte) I loved driving around in those big monsters, but they only do well in countries where fuel is cheap.
Today, my whole family drives Subaru, except for my wife who prefers the Teutonic manufactured vehicles.

Why would they be biased? In what way?
Their clients are looking for an opportunity for trade or to invest to make money.
Surely, they will report in the best interests of their clients, and if they see potential threats or problems, those will be identified as a risk and a reason to proceed/invest with caution, or not at all.
On the other hand, Argentina is much more biased, desperate for capital, and trade, their economy is in jeopardy andd they will only promote themselves. Certainly no mention of the downsides.
I know who I would listen to.

I even took the cylinder head off to repair a burned out valve. This was in the open air, 60 miles from the nearest garage with only a set of ring spanners to do the job. It took 3 hours and worked fine after it. After that I owned 4 Renaults until I bought a Nissan Primera ,Virtually no problems with it and I gave it to my son at 125,000 miles. He had it until he bought a LWB Land Rover. I then bought another Primera and currently drive a Toyota Avensis 2.0 Diesel. Suburu's are well made cars but expensive to run in the UK. Insurance is high, fuel consumption is high and taxing it is dear because of high CO2 emissions.
As a matter of interest, motoring costs in the UK are high.
The average cost of taxing and insuring a vehicle would be around £500 at best and it could be much, much more depending on the vehicle, your age and where you live.
Fuel costs in the UK are about £1.32 a litre for petrol and £1.36 a litre for diesel.
Stevie, I hate to break it to you but that is a very well respected organization that serves many senior levels in the US Gov't.

Aerolineas ~~barely~~ belongs to Skyteam; like AeroMexico, it cannot project metal to their mother hub at Schipol (heck, even freakin Garuda can get there!). At best both are passive members of the alliance. And overall, Skyteam having backed a dead horse with AA, underplayed Africa and totally eff-ed up in Oceania has royally botched southern hemisphere market viability.
As such, logically and logistically, the optimal (but not shortest) way to go commercial to the UK from the FI is through British Airlines -- i.e., OneWorld. Slumming with AA means one hell of a lost leg and lost miles on an nationalized (and mismanaged) airline that is pathologically hostile and contemptuous to the Islanders. But who else is part of BA's alliance and who has codeshares and miles sharing agreements? That would be Lan, making them the natural partner for the UK-bound traveler as well as one with business in other SA countries not just because of their continued national pride in making their Dirty War the Islanders problem. This makes having an extra miles accruing segment (AWAY from a country that continues to masterbate at the thought of standing on the Islanders necks like they did briefly in 82) somewhat (and maybe more than somewhat) worth it.

It does not matter what the Consul General says, he is from a system that consistently tells lies about the history of the Falklands.
And ANYTHING operated and maintained by AA will be a one way ticket sooner or later.
Once the Falklands become dependent on their enemies, what then?

@367 (Pardon while I annex MercoPress in the name of Flyertalk.com), it's not about the FF program, it's about its ability to transfer perks between other carriers. AA may be perfectly fine if you are staying regional near AR. It's probably better for the AR families wanting who don't fly much otherwise to visit the graves caused by AR's failed Hail Mary move to retain the Junta. But the Islanders self-identify as British as is their rights. I can't speak for FI flyers and clients of FI industry but I'll make a S.W.A.G. and suspect they'd rather fly BA or at least gain and retain BA/OW perks for the long distances they have to fly. I know I do when *I* fly (which is why for me, except for when I lived in Australia, Skyteam, Aerolineas's alliance, is my family's alliance since it gets me out of town and home faster and easier than my local alternatives) AND we have good status on them and the perks that go with them.

You are forgetting that the Argentines lost their illegal war of aggression and illegal occupation and the Islanders control their own lives now. Islanders may not want AA. They may want LAN. That is all that matters. Buenos Aires can make claims about their plans and pretend that they won their dirty war and have a say in entry requirements on Islands like they did when they held guns to the people's heads. But the FIG, from whom they run away like silly kindergartners fleeing the cooties of self-determination, are the ones to call the ball on this.
