Full article 28 comments

Argentina’s Antarctica campaigns are losing their flair and the country is having difficulties to fill vacancies for the 2013/14 season. This follows repeated claims of alleged corruption and delays in supplying the bases and stations plus an overall lack of support from the Defence ministry. Read full article

Won't be long before this costs someone's life down there if it hasn't already. I guess in an emergency they'll want help from BAS (again) or one of the other countries' equivalent.

The nature and standard of their scientific research is telling when the article refers to this as being a military problem.

Argentina is akin to a man who desperately wants to be a porn star but has been blessed with a 2” penis.
Their ambition constantly exceeds their ability.

Maybe they should do something to raise pay and condidtions if this story is true, but it seems to me mercopress often enjoys posting any random negative story about Argentina; bad things do happen in all countries guys!

I'm sure the UK and USA base won't let the RGs starve or freeze. Thank goodness we supply our bases!
    Poor saps
Plus RGs are too stupid to do decent research so I don't know why they are even trying to keep the base open.

I am afraid to report that out of date food is in fact quite normal on BAS bases. Its no big deal they are only 'best befores' anyway. I have visited Orcadas too and was made very welcome - its an old base - miltary run - but comfortable.

@9 Don't be daft. Just let the argies die. Who cares? Give them a couple of months, then fly in, pick up the frozen corpses and drop them where the needy Antarctica animals need food.

“bad things do happen in all countries guys!”

True, but in the case of Argentina, they all seem to be self-inflicted

The contracting company, Transport & Services, was formed by ex-empoyees of the Argentine merchant marine, ELMA. A strong suggestion from Nestor Kirchner got them their first contract with the Defense Ministry and it has been renewed each succeding year until last year when they were given the whole logistical support of the Antarctic Bases.

They contracted Ms Timca which is not an appropriate ship for Antarctic waters and ONE helicopter instead of the TWO demanded by the contract. The one helicopter spent 20 days out of action due to lack of maintenance, the Timca is not licensed for helicopter operations, so all in all Mr. Puricelli has fucked up big time!!!!!!!

    You say....:
“I am afraid to report that out of date food is in fact quite normal on BAS bases. Its no big deal they are only 'best befores' anyway. I have visited Orcadas too and was made very welcome - its an old base - miltary run - but comfortable.”

    I say....:
Good debunking of a pointless article.....
I would luuuuv to crack open one of those 15 years old, blended Mackinlay bottles from 1898 left by Shackleton down there.....
    “Best Before”........................... my left foot.

    @ Think

    Debunking?
“Little food, heating and fuel” was the claim in the article. Out of date food they would probably be happy with.

Well if I Don't Think thinks it's not a problem he should go out there and manage it for Putridjelli.

End of Think, end of Antartic Bases, end of problem.

    Nice one Think.

But did you read the comments?

Half the argies did not believe it and claimed one of their own C130s had gone to Uruguay.

“Their ambition constantly exceeds their ability.”

If they can't even supply 'research' bases properly they're going to have a hard time exercising their claim for Antarctica-the same as everything else, all mouth, little action.

Two points to the story from a Chilean perspective.
There is a very special relationship between the international bases on the Antartic peninsula. (O'Higgins Land) and almost everyone complains on just about everything. Especially regarding food.
I would also point out that the Argentine scientific teams sent to Antarctica are generally as good as other nations.
The problems exposed clearly reflect the wide scale corruption in the Argentine government.
Think and I both agree that we'd both like to break into one of those Mackinlay bottles...

It comes to something when a country with high unemployment and 600,000 people living on less than $400 per year cannot fill jobs paying $2,000 per month. Are Argentinians really that lazy or is the job really that unsafe. I suspect the answer is that Argentina really doesn't have the infrastructure to support this base and potential candidates are not willing to take the risks.

I suspect the answer is that Argentines don't like cold and windy... so how many RG volunteers would put their hands up for resettlement in the mythical malvinas?

You are perhaps overlooking the fact that they have to be scientists of one sort or another.

Imagine Nostril or I Don't Think being sent there: no malls and most certainly no turnips.

I suppose FatMax could go and berate rhose who are daft enough to go: he has the blubber for it.

If Argentina can't keep up its 'so-called' scientific base, then just how are they going to try and steal Queen Elizabeth Land?
