Figures from industry bodies indicate that bicycles outsold cars in 26 of the European Union's 28 states in 2012. It is thought the trend reflects a slump in car sales brought on by the continent's economic crisis. Read full article

    Baaaahahahahaha! HAHAHAHAHA.

And this is the “hyperpower” that we can't do without for a free trade zone?

Europe: with their bikes to automobile ratio in ALL COUNTRIES (including the UK), “boldy graveling the way back to the 19th century”.

LOL. Wow must things be desperate.

Toby the small tit puts his foot in it again... Still, in a cut off country like RGland (or should that be lardy land), they havent yet seen the need to cut pollution and improve your health.... Positively neolithic!

It would be like trying to explain economics to an orang-utan. A tyre is just a swing to them, they have no concept of what the tyre actually is for.

What a tit tobi is. Bicycle sales have exceeded car sales in the USA by more than 3 to 1 for quite some time now, world wide it's 2 to 1. Bicycling is a huge past time and sport in many developed countries.

Tobi...keep mom's tit in your mouth because when you leave momma's side and post, you stupidify yourself at breakneck speed.

Yes, cycling is great idea IF your climate and topography are suitable for its regular use. Rather a non-starter for other than recreational use or for the dedicated super-fit.
For example, I live at the top of a relatively steep hill. Even when I was younger and fitter, I had to push the bike up the last steep slope.
Today, as I write, we are having gusts of wind over 100kph, violent rain squalls, now turning into hail. We can expect this type of weather until March. Given the fact that my country has very little flat land, the only regular use for a bike would be city commuting. We need better public transport rather than roads choked with cars or the danger of cycling on our roads.

@1 The Grand Tit of Troll land lays claim to its TITle. As the argie “economy” heads past 27% and on toward 35% inflation. Together with 100% lies and repression, is argieland on the point of establishing an “alliance” with Venezuela? Unfortunately, argieland is only halfway toward its inflation target. Will Christmas see the “little birdie” finally reach argieland, land on CFK's shoulder and explode? Blowing her stupid head off!
@5 Don't you worry about us, Orango Chango, WE could BUY your piddling little “country” ten times over. And that's just our little nation. Think how far you have to go. First, you need to become a “country”. That's a place with a proper identity instead of being a collection of immigrant war criminals. Then you have to become a “nation”. This usually involves real nations, such as England, recognising you as being on a par. You're about 150 years short of that. Then you need other things such as credibility, good reputation and recognised trustworthiness. You're about 500 years short of that. Then you have to have money, real money. I wonder how much that means for a useless little “economy” like yours? When do you think you'll have seven or eight hundred billion US dollars as reserves? Plus working capital. Plus nil debts. Fifty years? A hundred years?
Come back and “talk” to us again in 2510 when you've grown up!

    Ever driven into London?
Was driving to Earls Court for an Exhibition...there's a sign on the road...go any further and you pay a congestion charge...then there's the parking if you can find a place.
I wouldn't like to think what it would cost every day of every week....for a year..
    9
City cycling.....Glasgow...what are you a duck?
They record the rainfall at one of your favourite places.....Younger's Botanic Garden Benmore, they once recorded that it rained every day for 110 days...
The Biblical flood was only 40 days...
Now there's a good export to the “Home Counties” for Scotland...freshwater, a pipeline all the way to the South...gravity fed, they are alway complaining of the lack of water in Summer....

We have other cities AWAY from the west coast...Edinburgh Dundee, Inverness and Aberdeen who have appreciably less rain than the west coast. Edinburgh has plenty of cyclists... I always seem to meet them in the Meadows area.

So, it's the end of europe because of bike sales.. what a lemon. Britain is due to invest in driver-less cars and promote cycling schemes. And where is your investment??? ah yes, you're investing zip!

No Think.....a strong believer in capitalism with prudent regulation and oversight. There's no doubt Walmart is a success over the past 50 years. There is also no doubt they sell mostly shit, but in a market economy, they is something to be sold to everyone.........one man's trash is another man's treasure.
I never labeled myself a liberal or conservative. Conservative's care nothing for the under class and liberals over burden the hard working class. Ask and liberal and they call me a conservative, ask a conservative and they call me a liberal. I don't think in line with a party or philosophy. I'm called......Undecided in Massachusetts.

Bi-partisanship? don't you mean partisanship and polarization? And no I don't see it ending anytime soon especially with the rancid tea party. Though I do see them becoming marginalized in the near future. Democrats do not have the balls to lead even when they are in power and Republicans think being the minority party they STILL get to pick political appointees. They need a financial wake-up call. 9/11 created a financial mess by the previous president going to war, erroneously invading a country, increasing spending and cutting taxes for the wealthy. But's thats what conservatives do......ask any if they ever served in the military they always are quick to send off to fight? The answer 9 times out of 10 is ....“no....I served my country in politics”. Dangerous work......

@17 Dear Bretwalda of Hartlepool in the north east. Hows the climate today? Doesnt look too healthy. Hope you are OK. I am fully in favour of congestion charges BTW
Clyde The Scots have some good ideas BUT.. the first tram arrived in Princes St yesterday, four years late and God knows how much over budget. And the Borders rail link to Tweedbank...?
Generally long distance sit up and beg buses are just awful compared to the comfort of our buses in South America
And the local buses? I was visiting Swansea some time ago and of the 37 people on the bus I was the only one who paid the 3.50 fare. The others were all very well dressed pensioners who didnt pay a penny even though they could well afford to
I think the Scots govt idea of converting long disused rail lines into pedestrian and cycle tracks is brilliant . You get away from the traffic and socialise if you want to

A child of 3 could fool you !

As you have obviously NEVER been in any European city, let me explain, in simple terms that even YOU may comprehend.
The volume of cars in British towns and cities has reached a choke point. Many people are now realising that it is quicker travelling short distances by bike, rather than by cars. Parking, once you have arrived, is either impossible or very expensive. Have you seen the videos of congestion on our motorways? The M25 round London is referred to as the world's largest car park !
Yes, economics have something to do with the drop in sales, but also people are keeping their cars for longer. Modern cars are so reliable that a 10 year life span is average. Why change something just for fashion ? Diesel here is £1.39 per litre, insurance for an average car is about £400 pa for an experienced driver with a good record.
Anyone below 22 can expect to pay a minimum of £2000 for a small car. Many people see cars as a liability rather than a necessity.
How is the car market in your impoverished country?

A bit unlike you, that fact that they were well dressed does not necessarily mean that they were well off

@25 Point taken. I think there are very deserving OAPs who really need a bus pass, but those blue rinsed ladies certainly did not, any more than they should get a winter heating allowance.

  • Leiard

    @26

Both the bus pass and winter fuel allowance are not automatically paid to pensioners but have to be applied for and I think you will find that the majority of those that are well off do not bother applying.

A lot of country bus routes would not survive without being subsidised in some form or another, I know this from the area where I live, so why not give it to pensioners who have paid into the system for all their working time.

Our biggest problem in the UK is we pay to much out to those that have never contributed to the system through hard work.

    @ 26 redp0ll

So you would rather pay winter heating allowance to all the skivers who have never paid a penny in tax but have never worked so get the “credit” of the NI?

No way. No contributions to UK NI, especially by the foreign immigrants, then NO benefits of any sort except emergency hospital treatment.

Don’t forget that the self-employed pay more NI either!

Anyway, how long has it been since you paid income tax in the UK, I still do?
