Not really much of a story. They are entitled to purchase military equipment as is any sovereign country.

These aircraft are as old as the mirage jets that they will be replacing, the airframes will only have a limited number of flight hours left on them and argentina will have to keep them maintained something that they do not do with any of there technical military hardware!

Yep, not much of a story...decent enough plane - for its age. I'd be more interested in the purchase of any weapons platforms to fit to these, especially of the anti-shipping variety.

“These aircraft were particularly active during the 1982 Falklands conflict” says it all really

But surely isn't this “militarising” the SouthAtlantic? Or does this not count as CFK bought them and she has some kind of special exemption?

My guess is it won't happen. They ordered some Boeing Wide Body jets for delivery after CFK is gone.
They are committing the next gov't to a lot of U$ they don't have and can't' get.

Argieland clearly has money to burn. Will the USA approve the sale of the Israeli versions of the engine? Where is argieland going to get US$100 million? Why doesn't it pay its debts? Does argieland realise that ONE Typhoon could kill the lot?

One would hope that the Paris club will look at this as Argentina paying lots of money out, and yet pleeding poverty and wanting deals on their debt.

They should be paying back their debts before militarising the south atlantic.

UK won't be bothered, these would be easy prey for the 4 jets stationed at Mount Pleasant, which are in place in a purely defensive role.

I'd love to see the justification of taking money for food out of the mouths of children into an aged plane purchase.

Perhaps its CFK's last roll of the dice before she has to step out the back of a C-130

    Clyde,
Interesting link. Frankly, the Argentines would be far better off purchasing modern Russian aircraft than refurbished junk from Israel. However, if the Argentines were really serious about rebuilding their airforce they'd wait one more presidential administration and focus on a modern small defense airforce instead.
But, knowing that my neighbors fail to operate logically, I assume they'll do something stupid, just like what they've done in the past.

Some of the utter sht in there, lol, along the lines of 'America most likely wont let Israel sell engines to Argentina for aircraft which would be a threat to the falklands in this gap before the 2020 carriers, because Britain will leverage America which currently needs Britain due to what Russia is getting up to. Not even “Satan” could carryout such horrendous systematic plan...

Argentina ready to sign for the 60 fighter aircraft,

    Their will be trouble ahead,
They will try again and end up dead,
    Better to pay ones debts
And start again with a clean sheet,

You are entitled to upgrade your planes
The old ones are far too old to fly again,
But the outcome will still be the same,

The world is heading towards a violent end,
And CFK just wants her pennith worth,
Waiting watching observing for the chance to claim that elusive victory,
As soon as the brits make a mistake…

Vaccine Maker Convicted in Deaths of 14 Babies in Illegal Vaccine Experiments in Argentina.

Since 2007, 15,000 children under the age of one from Mendoza, San Juan and Santiago del Estero have been included in the research protocol, a statement of what the study is trying to achieve. Babies were recruited from poor families that attended to public hospitals.

A total of seven babies died in Santiago del Estero; five in Mendoza; and twoo in San Juan.

Idiot you are not even intelligent to pick up the right article to bash Argentina.

The company mentioned in your article about the death of 14 children by performing illegal vaccine trials in humans is a British company called Glaxo.

And they also were found guilty in Colombia and Panamá for doing the same.

Another monster from the Dark Kindom of Satan...

If the Argentinean want to test new dangerous vaccines they will never use Argies babies they would use Monkeys or just British born, the result would be the same for their similarities.

There is no story regarding the islands, because these planes are not intended against the Falklands. All the comments related as to Argentina attempting a attack are idiotic. As simple as. Sorry.

As it is Argentina could barely keep track with its neighbours and that is IF the purchase is agreed and fulfilled....

There is planes that cross daily from the Bolivian and Paraguayan border and land in clandestine bases all over the north of the country. Argentina doesnt even have operational fighter jets to intercept them.

You guys have to study much more Argentina's current position and the power balance in the region.

No one seriously expects a short or even medium term attack - although UK Intel. thought the same in 81.

However, Argentina's CV means you have to prepare for a future populist nutjob looking for glory: any upgraded air-force would likely be called upon to probe and may be harass shipping in and around FI. If large O&G finds go commercial then things will get tetchy for sure.

Galtieri didn't last a week after the defeat of 1982.

If an Argentine leader dares to go that far it would be pretty much giving a Astute Class submarine green light to take down key assets of the economy in hours. Just by bombing ports of Bs As and Rosario Argentina is delivered a death blow.

Argentina needs to upkeep with the Brazilian an Chilean airforces, if Argentina was even serious about tacking the British presence in the Atlantic (notice the difference between Atlantic and not the islands) it would be developing anti submarine capabilities and upgrading and rebuilding the P-3 Orion fleet which is currently unable to patroll the continental waters, as well as getting new submarines. The money is just not there nor the political will to do it.

On the other hand Argentina's greatest security threat comes from the North along with the Bolivian and Paraguayan frontier, as well as currently having a big difference in power with Chile.

IMO this purchase is not even good enough and its pretty much another small patch to cover a increasing loophole.

43 - Fortunately Argentinas budget is only focused on its day to day goals of a standing self defence force. It has no need to fear Chile or any other Mercosur/S.American power. No need or focus on foreign colonial exploits.

Any acquisitions Argentina makes are for its own security, an assurance/insurance, nobody really has the combined motive and means to invade Argentina.
Any Arg purchases dont have the falklands/malvinas in mind as the primary focus.

The islanders however must keep in line with this naturally growing defense budget and any acquisitions made.
A budget which will grow based on exponential population growth over the decades to come. So that if they're still on the tropical Malvinas in 50 years time they'll be outnumbered by their own troops 2:1. Expensive.

    Think about it.

If a T45 is on station the Argentine airforce can kiss itself goodnight, Kfirs, Mirages Thunderjets et al.

The carriers coming inn 2020 will be useful but our ships and submarines (never mind the Rapier which will not be the same as its 30 year old cousin, and the Eurofighters) could give Argentina worse days than 1982

    @12 Clyde
Good link-although a C17 carrying a heavy load may need a long runway-I would not bet against it being able to land a t Stanley airport or one or two of the FIGAS airstrips (depending I guess on the season), depending on the load and how much fuel was left in the tanks.

It will be interesting to see if an A 400 could get to the Falklands after refuelling as it is more capable than a Hercules and also capable of rough strip operations-and the Falklands have plenty of those-the FIGAS grass airstrips have changed a lot in the last 30 years.

Perhaps Israel see some mileage in selling Argentina aircraft but if their aircraft suffer the same fate as Dagger vs Sea Harrier, then they will have the reputation of selling cannon fodder.

You are really naive to think that there would be no potential conflict in the future in South America.
First of all you are condemning Argentina to become protectorates of Brazil and Chile. Because they do have the means to destroy Argentina. I dont know where you get that they dont have the means for it when Argentine armed forces have bullets for a couple of hours. Argentina doesnt even have radars to controll its borders. Im expecting a africanization or Mexicanization of the NOA and the border lands with Paraguay and Bolivia and that might well become a future foucus of instability.

There is no border patroll or Gendarmeria.... They are ever more send over to Bs As or to the interior to cope with ever increasing criminality

And despite all the talk by politicians never before there has being so many purchases and increase in spenditure of defence like in the past decade in the region.... Here is a key point, if your neighbour covets your lands and resourses, he will never say so to you. They never do.

No one knows what the future will hold,
We can only predict with much uncertainty or based on past experience,

But south America has been in turmoil for decades, and probable will still be in turmoil for decades to come, until they can put aside there differences and live in peace and freedom/democracy,

Our interest is for the most part , the Falklands, and opinions very as to can future Argentinian governments invade or cause distress , or more trouble to the Falklands, or would future governments give up their claim and seek forever peace, thus creating freedom of choice , trade , etc,

But until this is settled the British government will have to station military units of all branches in the defence of the Falklands, just in case,
For we cannot afford to make the mistake of withdrawing only to find them knocking at the door again,

No one want this conflict with argentina to carry on and on, but until they change there attitude opinion and drop the claim, then this will never be solved , unless through violence, to which one wants, except a few deluded die hards,
    Just my opinion of course...

    C-17 Globemaster :-
The design of the aircraft allows it to carry out high-angle, steep approaches at relatively slow speeds, thus allowing it to operate into small, austere airfields onto runways as short as 3,500 feet long and only 90 feet wide.
It should also manage to get out of Mt Pleasant fully loaded..at a pinch.

I have watched and photographed C-17's from the RAF, USAF and RCAF
landing and taking off at Prestwick using less than half the runway for take off and about a third on landing.
It's range is sufficient to get from Ascension to the Falklands but the addition of air-to-air refuelling would be a wise move.

As the A 400M Atlas has an air-t0-air refuelling facilty it can reach the Falklands with a “top up ” en route supplied by the Voyager.

As a footnote, the Voyager has been cleared to fly again.
The accident inquiry found that the incident where the aircraft dropped thousands of feet suddenly was not because of any fault in the aircraft. The pilot had been using his SLR camera in the cockpit and failed to stow it properly. It fell down into the fly-by-wire side stick controls and jammed them causing the aircraft to do a sudden nose dive of 4,450 feet before it was brought back to level flight.

I would agree with your assessment of Chile's air force and the F-16..
Years ago, I had a conversation with a couple of USAF pilots who told me that flying the F-16 in a dogfight was like having a knife fight in a telephone booth. I know that RAF Tornado pilots flying against them in dissimilar combat did NOT engage in dog fights as they could not keep up with their maneuvers.. It was a case of in fast , fire missiles and leave even faster.
The aircraft the F-16''s did not like fighting was the Sea Harrier.
The theory of aerodynamics did not seem to apply to them.

Talking about side sticks and computer control, the first F-16 was almost lost when the side stick had a fault. In programming it, they got a decimal point wrong in the software and made it 10 times more sensitive than it should have been. When the pilot went to take off, the slight movement of the controls was multiplied tenfold and the aircraft went vertical. Luckily the engine was on full reheat and the power kept it going but he had a terrible job bringing it back down safely. I think the programmers got an earful when he got back !

    @Briton

Briton, Briton, briton... You have to travel more often and see the real world with your eyes and not through your propagandistic British media.

When you talk about South America you are talking about a territory of more than 17.8 km2.

Lets say 12% of total world mass of land including Antarctica.

Do you have any idea about how big and diverse is that?

Think in more than 4 times the size of what is Western Europe.

Or in Western and Eastern Europe plus part of Asian Russia.

Now make a calculisss about how many wars, destruction, riots, protests, dictators, tyrans (including Monarchs), corruption, civil unrest, poverty, illegal arrests, terrorism, etc, etc. you can find in the same area cited above and then come back.

You will see how pacific, democratic, less violent and stable is SA compare with Europe and part of Asia.

“But then again, I could be totally wrong on this occasion, and these South American countries have no problems, they are doing quite well and are respected nations,”

I’ve never said that SA countries have no problems...

What I’m saying is that you look like “Jack the Ripper” complaining about doctor malpractice on Aspirin prescriptions if you know what I mean.

“One day when you and your cohorts rule the known world, then you will get rid of those pesky none existent pirates wont you…lol”

I don’t but I can see on the news right now Obama moving his head down like in penitence in an interview with Argie Pope Francisco.

All the guns that Obososo has available and he has to move his head like an idiot puppet in front of a man looking like he is going to a medieval party.

    What do you think?

    Very Silly...

BTW when is the turn for Elizabeth II to move her head like an idiot puppet?

oh! I forgot that you are the Dark Kingdom of Satan...

“In any case, I would put our F16s against any airforce in South America, ”

Yes and better than the Mirage F1s Argentina was hoping to purchase from Spain. I believe (unless it was the F15 Eagle) that Israel replaced its Kfirs with the F16. Chile also has an AWACS aircraft-a very potent airforce.

Argentina would not come off well if they did decide to attack Chile.

...of course, I referring to the queen of the Low Countries...

By the way, the Malvinas DO BELONG TO Argentina... They exist as a a delusion of grandeur in the imaginative dreams of South American Kleptomaniacs...

One last question: since we're touching on the subject of kleptomania... What percentage of graft do you think a inventive government like that of CFKs could skim off an Israeli half billion Dollar refurbished jet fighter contract?

Now let’s not be disparaging of the argie military. It’s not their fault that they have out of date equipment, from the fully auto FAL (what a joke, even a good shot can’t hit anything with these) to ships that turn over in port and carry out of date munitions anyway. And their airforce! Has ANYONE ever SEEN an argie plane FLYING in the last two years and make it back on the ground in one piece?

No, TMBOA is so scared they will make a coup and shoot her on the front lawn of Casa Rosada that she has starved them of funds.

But of course there is something that we just cannot overlook. They are all cowards when faced with a real army, especially one that can come across the Falklands and kick their arses off the islands. But then again who in the whole of SA wouldn’t be?

You don’t need to apologise Clay anyway I appreciate your gesture.

Anyway To be honest I’m not sure now who was but I remember that he says something like...

“If you were so stupid to sent untrained soldiers or something like that...”

So I added that the untrained soldiers have sunk half of the Royal Navy, etc.

And then you have corrected me that was not a half of the RN and you call me ( I don’t remember know) because what was obvious for you that the Argie Pilots where professional military personnel.

And of course you where right but my irony was to show the idiot poster that none can sink any military fleet even from Bolivia (irony here because Bolivia have no sea) if has not a proper training.

My remark (Britonwannabe) was for the “US Marine” the “Aglo centric” aka “Rambo on steroids” that wanted to kill me when he would be coming to Argentina.

    What a lot of nonsense!

The facts are that the British have a fearsome, efficient and globally respected war machine with some of the best trained troops in the world.
This is achieved without conscription or National Service.

Argentina's military are a laughing stock by comparison.

What you ACTUALLY said was that untrained Argentine conscripts sank half the RN's ships and killed 300 of our “supermen”soldiers.

This is blatantly untrue as it was your AIR FORCE that did the damage to British forces.....they were not untrained conscripts .
