Argentine Economy Minister Axel Kicillof and Industry Minister Débora Giorgi fly to Brasilia on Tuesday in a bid to swing the automobile trade balance in Argentina’s favor, with the sector accounting for the majority of a total 3.15 billion dollars trade deficit. From Brazil Finance minister Guido Mantega confirmed bilateral discussions on the auto industry and exports. Read full article

Only a drop of 1/3 in Brasil's exports to Argentina.

    Reason: Trade restrictions by Argentina.

What chance of doing the EU - Mercosur deal?
Snowballs and Hell come to mind.

Looks like a classic case of over production. Argentina and Brazil will not solve them problem by selling to each other if they both have no money.
They need to look for external markets, but Kristina's restrictions have dashed that plan.

They both make the same crappy products! Their “sales strategy” is to beat each other in price by currency manipulation.
It is a race to the bottom.

Brazil is the third largest U.S. lender as can be seen on the Federal Reserve website. Brazil has 376 billion dollars in international reserves.

4.Brazil's reserves will be used up as the economy slows unless the gov't implements austerity plans immediately.
I don't see that happening in an election year ( or anytime with Marxist Monkeys in charge)
Your bigger than Argentina/Venezuela but in no better shape ideologically.
So it will take a little longer for you to slide right back into the comfortable economic policies you know so well, devalue and inflation.

The automakers will decide what happens, not a bunch of commie losers who have demonstrated they couldn’t run a piss-up in a brewery.

If VW have any sense they will forego the expansion in The Dark Country and put it, and the existing capacity, into Brazil.

My Brazilian made VW is as good as anything VW make in Europe. I made the decision NOT to buy an Argentine made car having driven a GM thing when we came over to have a look see at Uruguay.

I see that the Paris Club is not giving up on the IMF audit. I seem to remember telling Think that would never ever happen.
Think and Think2 (Stevie) have never been able to get anything right ever.
It odd that they both think they are smart.
    I wonder why?

I agree. Brazilian made cars are better built than Argie cars.

Brasil might have a centre-left government, but they are not anti-business like Argentina, hence more investment, hence better quality. The Brazilian auto industry also supplies many parts to the Argie auto industry.

    10. I don't know why anyone would buy a car specifically made for South America. Most of them you can push the door panel in with your thumb.
The car accidents are SPECTACULAR! Most of the time whatever is left over doesn't even look like a car!

Do they have jokes in SA about Argie cars like the old 'Lada' jokes in Western Europe?

The politicians are, again, displaying their total ignorance of economics. The economy is not improved by giving one sector an advantage, at the expense of others. Prosperity requires a reduction of government spending and interference--lower taxes, less regulation and less restriction of trade. People will find a way to make money, if they are left alone to do it; it cannot be done to government specification, or while most of the profit is being stolen for political purposes.

    @ 11 yankeeboy

You are to say the least a bit behind the times when it comes to the modern car crash standards!

So, would you rather (if you are unfortunate to be in a smash – there are NO accidents) be in a car that doesn’t look like a car after the smash but the safety cell (in which the passengers travel) remains intact and no-one is hurt OR in a big yank tub (the current Dodge Ram V8 pickup with twin drive wheels for example) which when it hits a solid wall throws the passengers that hard against the seat belt that serious trauma AND even death occurs?

    Your pick. :o)

As far as I am aware, no manufacturer makes cars specifically for SA. They may trim them down market to reduce the price but the same cars are sold in North America albeit with perhaps a different model name and all the bells and whistles but the Americans can afford them (they are cheaper than American built cars anyway).

    @ 13 Mr. Ed

So you have never seen a Brazilian built GOL or whatever it’s called in the US?

You do know that up until about 10 years ago American cars were ridiculed in Europe for their lack of performance, poor fuel economy and relatively shoddy build standard, do you? Sales of American cars are still laughably low.

Things have changed now that Honda, Toyota and Land Rover are manufactured there and have shown you how to do things better, but BMW suffered several dash electrical fires in the X5 built in America due to shoddy workmanship, but I bet you didn’t know that did you? BMW America kept it all very cool, until two of them burnt themselves out in London within a few weeks of each other. Then, as they say, the shit hit the fan.

We can all remember the Skoda jokes as well. I would MUCH rather have a current build Skoda Octavia than ANY current compact American car. But that is just me being sensible with my hard earned money (which is why I ended up with a fair amount of it).

    imbeciles various
vw builds cars in brazil and argentina and those models do not between them.
the quality standards are the same for brazil, argentina and germany.
so an argentine vw amarok is built here cause the parent establishment decide that vw argentina had the know how to build pick ups.
it is the same with the ford ranger.
    or with the new focus.

so, let´s talk the day those companies decide to build those cars / pick ups in the falklands, chile or uruguay.

Chris, There are lots of cars in SA that I've never seen in the USA. We only recently got Fiat and don't have Renault or Peugeot.
I've have driven Mercedes for as long as I can remember. In Argentina I bought a used one from someone at the German Embassy. I actually sold it for more than I paid when I left! I bet they're having problmes geeting it fixed now though.
I'd rather have heft and metal than the tin foil the other cars are made out of.

@17 When it comes to cars, the USA is a different planet altogether. Big but relatively cheap cars, huge pick-up trucks and SUVs, low fuel efficiency, lots of specific models. And of course, Fiat, Peugeot and Renault are nobodies there.
The quality of cars made in Argentina and Brazil tends to vary a lot according to manufacturing and their suppliers. Some are very close to first world standards, others are awful. Some are global models, others are pure garbage made with outdated platforms. Some cut more corners than others. And always safety costs extra.

Are you a Star subscriber, by chance? :-)

Mercedes is well-known for their crash safety and advanced design - it's obvious that you must be aware of current auto build standards and technology.

Some car companies do it better than others, even from the same country.

“I'd rather have heft and metal than the tin foil the other cars are made out of.”

So what are you going to say when I tell you that the latest series of Mercs has THINNER than industry average body panels? But they are STRONGER and crumple better in a smash because of the material they are pressed from. The really, really important thing is the passenger cell structural integrity and therefore its ability to keep the contents (passengers, etc.) unharmed in a smash.

Mass (weight if you like) is a liability in a smash, remember one half mass, times velocity squared? That’s the energy you have to take to nothing from the speed at which the crash takes place. So going faster really piles on the energy, but going at the same speed with a heavier car does as well.

I should leave worrying about the weight of the car and go for one with FIVE STARS crash performance irrespective of the weight (or the make, the tests are independently done).

    It's really simple:
Manufacture products (cars in this instance) that are of a quality that consumers want and a cost that the consumers are prepared to pay.

Skoda's partnership with Volkswagen was a wonderful success by improving the quality of the cars tremendously.
Prior to 1990 Skoda was looked at as a joke, by 2000 they were liked and later well respected.

Oh and I can be found on Epsilon Eridani III.

Bel Air driver lost his legs minimum, his face hit the steering wheel, total failure of passenger compartment to save the driver who probably DIED. More “heft” but no good for anything!
    No surprise here.

NO damage to passenger cell on the 2009 car, driver’s airbag deployed and saved the driver a fractured skull, no leg damage, DRIVER LIVED, perfect result.
    NO SURPRISE HERE EITHER.

NB: The link is the same! No Smart car!

    Try this one:

70 mph to ZERO in less than one second. Driver would be dead in both cars.
    NO SURPRISE HERE EITHER!
