Uruguay's inflation index was down 0.06% during April with the annual index standing at 9.18% and 4.68% in the first four months of the year, according to the latest release from the country's stats office, INE.

The latest index points out that food and beverage only increased 0.03%, because of the prices agreement reached with the main supermarket chains, suppliers and importers.

A year ago the inflation index was 0.45%, for the four months, 4.05$ and in twelve months, 8.14%.

In the current April, health-care was the item which most receded, 2.84%, followed by Leisure and culture, down 1.34%. The rest of the items according to the latest INE release experienced slight increases.

Restaurants and hotels was the item with the strongest surge, 0.70%, followed by furniture and home appliances, 0.52% and Housing and Education, 0.44%.

The negative inflation index is supported by the freeze of the health-care monthly contribution (price managed by government); a fall in fruit and vegetable prices because of improved weather conditions and the price agreements between government and the private sector.

Last March the Uruguayan government implemented an anti-inflation package which consisted in eliminating VAT charges on power, drinking water and telecommunications (all government monopolies' services); price agreements and a restructuring of the most popular gambling fee. However although the game fee was down 33%, the chances multiplied several times by adding a couple of numbers.

Fiddling with the figures again using the money of bloated monopolies mismanaged by time served politicians in most part though ANTEL still shows the other bozos (especially ANCAP) how it’s done.

Last year, compared to the year before, my budget spreadsheet showed inflation at 12.7% YoY for core items: food, fuel(s), water, telecoms, Intendencia charges and medical subscriptions, NOT 8.14%. Don’t forget that just before Christmas “No Money Pepe” put 10% on all liquid and gas fuels and then wondered why everything suddenly shot up. The idiot still does not get it that ALL goods and people travel by road in some form or another, and the 10% is a creeping incremental from there that pervades everything down stream.

This month we were both amazed to see a fall of 9.65% in my wife’s medical subscription, mine has not yet arrived. Now we know! It’s the congenital idiotic, illiterate and innumerate politico’s massaging the figures during an election year.

The sad fact is of course that the lazy poor, who are by definition themselves congenitally idiotic, illiterate and innumerate otherwise they would not have parents who never worked in school and most certainly never had any form of job, will think the government is “great” and rush out to vote them in again.

The saying “turkeys don’t vote for Christmas” is just as applicable here.
