Grant Shapps, British Conservative MP and party chairman urged Gibraltarians to vote Tory in the EU election and reminded the Rock that Labor ‘tried to sell you down the river into the Mediterranean’. Shapps was speaking shortly after arriving in Gibraltar and paying a courtesy visit on acting Chief Minister Dr John Cortes. Read full article

May 16th, 2014 - 07:59 pm - Link - Report abuse 0then again have not the conns tried to sell us to the highest bidder,
scrapping our defences do not help one bit,
Cameron is not so innocent in all this,
he sits whilst the European fools laugh at us,
besides, labour aint in power, You are,
so its your responsibility to deal with Spain and Argentina.
Back to the Labor/Labour arguement of a previous thread (sorry). I do wish Mercopress would spell it as the Party they refer to spells it. That is just good journalism and nothing to do with British/US spelling differences.
May 16th, 2014 - 10:42 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Also, I do wonder which way our notorious refugee in Scotland is going to vote?
What's your take on this Voicey?
Wait a minute...didn't Cameron say that if he wins the General election then there will be a referendum on the EU.....
May 17th, 2014 - 12:04 am - Link - Report abuse 0I think the words were.... the only way to guarantee the UK will get a referendum on the EU is if they vote Conservative.....
Also this guy is talking shite this is the European elections and UKIP cannot take the UK out of Europe even if they win a majority in the European Elections....
So no implications for the people of Gib...
UKIP have no UK MP's at all....just MEP's...
McVoicey. Don't get your reference to Cameron/referendum , not the issue here.
May 17th, 2014 - 12:58 am - Link - Report abuse 0MP Shapps said the Conservative message is: “Look, if you want Gibraltar to continue to be part of the UK, if you want to know who is really batting for you, it’s the Conservatives, so please vote Conservative on the 22nd.”
quote batting for you unquote.
This is all just political hot air.
I agree that even if UKIP did win the UK majority in the UK it could not take the UK out of the EU, but it could have a [mc] voice (potentially) on the futue direction of the EU. Whilst it is a convoluted argument Shapps does have a point that UKIP success in the EU elections could possibly harm Gibralters standing.
It's fuckin tenuous but he does have a point.
Bloody politicians!
Again just another pointless story from the Mercopressians of Islas de Mercopressia ... (situtated somewhere in the South Altlantic within striking distance of Montevideo ;-) ................
this guy seems to be related with the macacos.

May 17th, 2014 - 03:08 am - Link - Report abuse 0Personally, I can't see any current political party in the UK disavowing Gib or the Falkands.
Political suicide considering the strength of public opinion.
Only a silly immature little boy could conjure up a remark like that of paulcedron.

May 17th, 2014 - 07:39 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The only thing the EU is good for is sucking the money out of the Brits and giving it to the likes of the Spanish.
I have had enough of the present UK parties in the EU and hope that UKIP does really well and they ALL lose their seats to UKIP. They cannot be any worse and will very likely be a darned sight better.
The same goes for the UK election.
Hello everyone,
May 17th, 2014 - 08:51 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Just a short note.
Contrary to Mr Sharp’s reported claim, Gibraltar is NOT part of the United Kingdom –for that matter, nor are The Channel Islands, Diego García, The Isle of Man, The Falklands et cetera, nor our remaining Caribbean colonies.
Simply another case of so many ignorant people ranting along about so much uninformed rubbish –par for the course on these pages!
Jim, in Madrid.

May 17th, 2014 - 09:49 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Just a couple of questions:
1) WTF is Mr. Sharp? I think you may be referring to Mr. SHAPP.
2) WHERE is he reported to have made that claim, because it isn't on here?
I would wait until your glasses have been replaced after you trod on them, it would be so much better for the rest of us.

May 17th, 2014 - 10:19 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Did you tread on your glasses also...?
....“If you live in Gibraltar and you care about Gibraltar being part of the United Kingdom”
...being PART of the United Kingdom
@9 You were doing okay for a while. Then you came out with Caribbean colonies. Such a shame. Overcome with your sense of self-worth, you went too far. Britain doesn't have colonies. Try the definition of a colony. So, are you a traitorous British ex-pat? A spaniard with a decent familiarity with English? Or Jimmy Hanley risen from the grave?
May 18th, 2014 - 12:15 am - Link - Report abuse 0@10. No. For the time being, scotland IS part of the United Kingdom.
@12. Being an idiot, you don't understand the UK political system. Have you ever tried logic? Places such as Gibraltar are British Overseas Territories. Can you understand that? An Overseas Territory as opposed to a Home Territory. So yep, Gibraltar can be part of the United Kingdom. Look back over the years. The UK has always been good at taking crazy ideas and making them work. Tanks. Aircraft carriers. Radar. Sonar. Jet engines. We're so good!

Your right, I did misspell Shapp’ s name –which by the way, is almost certainly not of British origin– sounding rather more like it has a Dutch or similar Germanic root.
And yes, I AM still suffering with my eyesight.
However, I do know Shapp’s correct name and I’m also familiar with his outstanding political mediocrity. And YES, I DID take the trouble to carefully read the relevant MercoPress report, before posting my original comment on this matter.
I’ve copied part of said report here:

Re: the Llanitos wishing to remain associated with the UK. Of course they do! In the entire Mediterranean region, Gibraltar is one of the very few territories who’s people are doing still doing quite well Thank You and are living pretty high on the hog. So, leaving aside noble notions such as patriotic loyalty, nobody but a complete fool would want to throw in his lot with a mendicant, misgoverned, corruption ridden country such a Spain –most Spaniards are fed-up to their back teeth with things here, themselves. Nevertheless, the relative situation on the Rock compared to that of Spain, DOES NOT MAKE GIBRALTAR PART OF THE UK!
For 13 Conqueror:
Re: “colonies”, et cetera.
I don’t wish to widen this discussion of Shapp’s efforts in the Gibraltar EU election campaign to the point of including an erudite exposition of the subtleties of linguistic refinement. But I reckon that –in trying too hard to appear clever– you’re being a tiny bit pedantic, me ol’ Mate. As far as I understand, the meaning one should attribute to the word COLONY depends on the context in which it is used –even friggin’ bees have colonies– and I DO know that our remaining colonies are now officially styled

Eye don't trust these conns,
May 19th, 2014 - 06:51 pm - Link - Report abuse 0but if and when we withdraw from the unmighty EU, Gibraltar eye think will have to make that decision of staying or going with us,
it may very well be unsettling or troublesome, but that's life,
We just seem to be in the wrong place, at the wrong time, with an anti British European continent for the most part.[that's not al, Europe.]
just an opinion.

Extremely bad eyesight and poetry.
I don't think that the headline is really correct - the Tories would try and sell Gibraltar down the river to their friends at a reduced price, Labour would simply give Gibraltar to their friends at no cost in order to make their friends like them more.
May 20th, 2014 - 09:16 am - Link - Report abuse 0Politicians - not enough sand.
Today the MOD played down the report in the EXPRESS that extra men were being sent to Gibraltar,
May 20th, 2014 - 05:58 pm - Link - Report abuse 0they say it was done at the end of 2013, and only a few extra,
some say, we are kowtowing to our political masters in the European oval office,
