The European Court of Human Rights has upheld a ban by France on wearing the Muslim full-face veil, the niqab. A case was brought by a 24-year-old French woman, who argued that the ban on wearing the veil in public violated her freedom of religion and expression. Read full article

“The court was able to understand the view that individuals might not wish to see, in places open to all, practices and attitudes which would fundamentally call into question the possibility of interpersonal relationships, which, by virtue of an established consensus, formed an indispensable element of community life within the society in question”.

That is a perfectly worded paragraph clearly defining the limits of the degree to which middle-eastern culture can challenge French culture. It has nothing to with religious freedom - the hijab, veil and niqab all precede the emergence of Islam - and there is nothing about not wearing a veil that prevents this woman from expressing her religious beliefs.

I have no problem with Islamic women wearing any kind of head-covering - if that is their wish. Equally I have no problem with the French state setting boundaries for what they consider to be inappropriate behaviour, in public, within it's borders.

It is up to each country to make their own laws,
and thus must be obeyed by foreigners or tourist alike,

as they say, [ When in Rome ].

l don't think the sun in France is as ravaging to the face as in Arabia, etc.
So there is no real need for this type of clothing.
You madame, or your family chose to go to La France.
Therefore you must abide by her laws.
lf you don't want to abide by French laws, then leave France.
lf l were to choose to live in the middle East, then l would have no problem with wearing lslamic dress.

After all, wouldn't be nice to see the face of who eventually is going to kill you? or at least have a security camera photos of her/him? The main reason for the law is Face and gender recognition. You want to know why... go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ry3NzkAOo3s
    and you will understand.

She could always go and join the so-called Caliphate and put herself at risk of a stoning to death for adultery with no proof required.

She should be grateful to be in France and abide by French societal norms.

No need to go and join the Caliphate, they are going to take Rome and destroy the seat of Christians for the glory of Allah.

According to the nut-job who is the self-appointed 'leader' of the Caliphate. I warned of this early this year and was soundly derided as being all sorts of fascist, racists and all the other 'ists' you could think of, so I have only one thing to say:

I TOLD YOU THIS WAS COMING AND I WAS CORRECT.

    Correct in what ChrisR?

    Racist paranoia?

I still don't tar an entire religion by the actions of a couple of nut jobs.

    Cristina is not every Argentinean.
    Cameron is not every Brit.
    Obama is not every American.

And Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is not every Muslim.

Get a grip and get some perspective.

If they don't like the laws, they should leave. Period. Non-muslims must abide by the laws of “islamist” countries if and when they go there. And if they don't they face not a small fine but usually years in a filthy prison and even death. If this woman complained in her own country...what ever that is that she couldn't drive a car, couldn't walk on the streets without a relative being with her, couldn't show her face at the window of her house, and so many other things she would not face a small fine either, she would probably be stoned to death.

    “Racist paranoia?”

So now I am a racist, according to you?

Do you know about the problems that Australia have been getting with these cretins and still have.

Islam is NOT a religion: it’s a force against all “non-believers” especially YOU. Try owning up to being homosexual to The Caliphate and see where that gets you!

“Get a grip and get some perspective” AND try leaving your racist idealisms somewhere else: they could (eventually) be the death of you.

I think other posters on here have more of a grip on matters than you seem to.

    Anglotino,
l have to agree with ChrisR.
l have experienced the problems that these people cause.
lt maybe the fanatic minority that give lslam a bad name, but the silent majority do nothing to stop them & in fact go along with them.
Name me one country where Muslims live peacefully with their neighbours.
ln theory, lslam has some good points, but in practice it has many bad ones.
Unfortunately thats the way it is & wearing blinkers is not going to solve anything.

“”The European Court of Human Rights has upheld a ban by France on wearing the Muslim full-face veil, the niqab“”..
Very sound decision....if she doesn't like the French laws, she can always go back to where she came from....nobody forced her to go to France.
If a person leaves their country of origin, it is usually because where they are going to, can offer a better life....you can't have your cake and eat it too....

It beats me why some people move to countries that they are not prepared to dovetail with customs of.

There are countries where I don't agree with that country's practices, laws etc.

Simple. I don't go to them.

I was amazed when in the Falklands to hear a lady from the UK complain there were no dry cleaners in the Falklands at the time.

I said yeah, its the Falklands-the wind is the dry cleaner.
Why do you like it here she asked, there's no supermarkets nightclubs (etc etc etc).

But there was no VAT either, and rent was £30 a month (water included)and it cost nothing to cut peat, and there were more public holiday than UK, and petrol was cheaper than the UK, medical care was free(etc etc etc etc).

This lady clearly needs to move to a country where her headdress is not a problem.

    @5 & 10 Chris R

If you were able to predict the rise of the new Caliphate a year ago, then I can only applaud your prescience. I don't believe they will be fighting on the streets of Roma any time soon though. ISIS has now made enemies of just about all of the serious players in the region.

I'm not sure by what you mean by problems with Muslims in Australia. The Cronulla riots had more to with neighbourhood territoriality than religious distinctions. Testosterone, in a word.

The few Islamic terrorist plots we have uncovered seem to have been inspired by Clouseau rather than Bin-Laden and the 150 Aussie jihadists who have made their pilgrimage to Syria will not be returning. Assuming they survive the threshing machine that the Syrian war has become, their passports have now been cancelled. They're someone else's problem now.

Finally, Islam really is a religion, evolved from Christianity and Judaism, they share many of same prophets - Abraham and Jesus to name two. Just because islam, like any other belief system, can be used to exploit disaffection, alienation and ignorance doesn't make it any less so.

@14 Heisenbergcontext....allow me to disagree partially with your sttatement that “Islam is really a religion etc”. Islam is quite a bit moe than a religion, it's a way-of-life. I'm no expert on it, but have read and seen enough to realize that it governs just about every aspect of your life, not just your spiritual side which, in other 'religions' , you normally have the option to choose to what extent you want to follow its teachings...or not...without suffering the consequences, if you don't.

Islam won´t be a threat to the West unless the West is happy to bend over to them. In military terms, they are a joke.

To all you Muslim apologists I have only one thing to say.

If you want to see an example of what happens when the west bends over to these medieval terrorists take a good look at Sweden. They have a real problem due to their liberal attitude and expectation that everybody in the world is like them. Then came this scum.

At least Australia cancelled the passports of their 150 Aussie jihadists (something I was unaware of @14) just why the UK cannot do the same is down to the bleeding hearts and do-gooders who will be the first to get hurt when the home grown terrorists carry out their own jihad. They have already tried two half-arsed attacks in London (one of which nearly did for me) and it will only get worse while Camoron et al are in power.

Very good point Briton. Equality requires participation.

Would I show up in a Northern Ireland bank in a full face balaclava and expect 'equal' treatment?
    No. I would not.

Sick people. Women can dress how they please. Posterior size is relevant to culture! Depends on what floats your boat!

Shocking and despicable does not even start to cover it.
