nightmare... we would be flooded by mercosur products, free access for their products to asia, but they wouldn't buy anything from us or impose trade blocades. We don't need them to export to Europe. In what aspect would we as Pacific Alliance profit from them?

@1. You're not supposed to profit. Mercosur is falling apart as a trade organisation because certain parties only see it as political. How long has it been trying to get an agreement with the EU? Who holds it back? Who has most members? Who will be the first to “suffer” as Paraguay suffered? How long before a PA member has a mercosur member, or the whole of mercosur, interfering in its internal affairs?

How can have an agreement with Mercosur when Mercosur's own members cannot reach free trade agreement amongst themselves ?

@1. Now wait a minute... I go into this thinking the P.A. is holding the leash, instead of the other way around. Remember, a couple things still need to fall into place, but if this deal speeds up and the P.A. supports it, the P.A. is going to mop the floor with Mercosur. Otherwise, they wouldn't want to speed up the process. They know economies like Argentina and Venezuela are weak, and that Brazil may have bitten off a little more than it can chew here trying to get everyone integrated without a lot of backroom deals and number fudging first. No one is putting a gun to the P.A.'s head to do this.

So you don't want Mercosur products? Don't buy them. Moreover, I don't see how a deal with Mercosur has anything to do with EU trade. As far as dictating foreign policy, there is no guarantee (and I think the assumption is erroneous) that the Mercosur countries would force the P.A. countries to integrate at the level that Mercosur has. If the P.A. takes Brazil's bait and agrees to the integration, they still have a right to negotiate terms to their liking. I don't think they'll miss that opportunity.

It will never happen. Argentina is still blocking imports and the few they do let them in they pay for them 6-9 mos later.
That will only happen 1x to a company.
Then they won't ship until payment is received.

Brazil is screwed by their Marxist ideology. IF that horrible Dilma is re-elected they will fail right after Argentina. It will take longer because they're bigger.

It is pleasing to see that The Pacific Alliance is having a positive effect on the encouragement of trade and reduction of protectionism in the region. However time will tell because too often countries like Brazil will want to bend the situation to advantage them. Join but conform in my book....

The PA would be Ill advised to align themselves with Mercosur.

Why on earth would an ascending commercial alliance chose to ally themselves with a consummate commercial failure?

It beggars belief, all they will be doing is entangling themselves in an obvious fuck up!

    Just does not make sense.

    @ManRod
I agree with you that the PA has made good progress with focus on exporting to Asia which presents far better opportunities for us than exporting to MS. But there would be upsides to freer trade with Brazil. Free trade agreements free up capital movement which creates more opportunities for Chilean businesses that have been so successful expanding in Peru and Colombia.

The entrepreneurial explosion of the last 20 years means that besides the big corporations, there are more Chilean businesses than ever ready to take advantage to freer access to regional markets.

    Condorito and Think,

As you both know very well, our countries enjoy a fairly modest exchange of goods and services. Chile used to import a lot of wonderful beef, but now we find that Paraguay, Uruguay, Brazil, the United States and even Australia seem to outsell the minor offerings from the Pampas. The Jumbo carries a fairly good selection of manufactured food offerings from Argentina and my local specialty meat seller offers some very nice BBQ implements from across the Andes. I personally have some very nice custom shoes and boots from previous visits to BA, and my son-in-law drives a Mendoza assembled VW pickup which is sincerely excellent. As far as to most consumer goods, electronics, military equipment, etc...
...well you both know too well...

Think, I would propose that one of your countrymen start exporting your delicious torta galesa as our local pan de pascua is far inferior. We would happily in turn send you all the nalca you might need for the world's biggest curanto.
It would be also nice to utilize that empty gas pipeline that crosses the Andes, but that is as the Americans here say: “a pipe dream”

With all due respect, I am not aware that Brasil wants to incorporate other neighbours into one country.

We help when we can to the North and to the South, as required. Unlike some others, we would like an fair and equitable trade agreement with the EU.

And unlike some “ Picaretas ”, we pay our bills, sometimes ahead of the due date. The IMF, for example, who we now loan funds to.

The crap Arg mfgs stays in Arg, nobody else wants it.

It is times like this that reinforces my idea that Think has not been to Arg since the 70s.

Haven't they laid off most of the TDF “free port” mfg anyway because they can't get the parts to assemble the products any longer?
    Yes, yes they have.

The Americans grant a certain type of US Visa if investments (usually property) in excess of $500,000. USD are purchased. I believe that is what is being referred to above.

On the other hand there will never be any absorption of other Latin American countries into Brasil. Zero. They would not stand for such a takeover, and we being as large as the USA have all the territory and resources to trade for many decades to come. We feel obliged to help and assist our neighbours as we can, where possible, but we also would not want to inherit any more problems either.

Protection of our resources, inland and offshore, will continue to be updated under defense programs such as Amazônia Azul.

    In English:

Sponsored VISA B-2 hybrid by US Senator Charles Schumer:

The program would offer a three-year renewable visa for foreigners who invest $500,000 or more in residential real estate, at least $250,000 of which must go toward a primary residence. Dwellings purchased for nonresidential purposes could be rented out. The visa holder, meanwhile, must agree to live in the primary residence for at least 180 days a year and pay U.S. income taxes on foreign earnings. All purchases would have to be in cash - no mortgage or home equity loan would be allowed. To allay fears of fraud, or worse, terrorism, the program would subject all applicants to criminal and security background checks. If approved, participants would not be eligible for Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security benefits. Their visas would not serve as a path to U.S. citizenship or as an authorization to work. A property sale would render the visa invalid. ”

One way to look at the investment is if the property is rented out.

Currently in Brasil, all foreigners may own property without any visa requirement other than as Tourist, as long as all taxes (IPTU) are paid. This includes rental property.

There is an investment visa here in Brasil for operating a business, including hiring employees, but the “red tape” involved has scared off many potential investors.

I'm not sure where you live in North America, but is $ 500 K USD considered inexpensive property in your country ? If so, you must be a Millionaire Yanquiboi.

    26. That's just a tourist visa that lets you stay 6 mos instead of 90 days. Owning property in the USA doesn't automatically guarantee that you'll get the tourist visa.
We also have an investment visa, that's how all the rich Chinese are buying their way into the USA. Billions are flowing out of China into the USA since just about everyone knows China is on a verge of collapse.

500K doesn't buy you much property where I live and certainly not a single family house.

Yankeeboy@23 & Botinho@24 : If I were you, wouldn't waste time listening to BrasiGayo's lies..... a Green Card ?? Visa waiver for the USA ?investments / property in Florida ??... I don't know which of the dickheads in “brasileiro” group is posting now, but the 'original' asshole is still struggling to pay the mortgage on his “barraco” (wooden shack) in his slum, light-years away from owning investments in Florida. Ola Jack Bauern -

I appreciate your friendly suggestion, but I would rather choose to read any and all postings here. Our friend has been posting here for sometime now, in various forms of prose from the lucid to the fantastic.

In the case of the clearly fraudulent “ Chinese ” that posted here recently, I simply chose to ignore, and scroll on. Were those postings coming from a European or North American, they would be considered racist.

@32 Olá Botinho...While I defend free speech, and therefore everyone's right to express their opinion, I do not particularly appreciate it when some people use this freedom , probably through ignorance, or maybe because they are brainwashed, to go totally off the rails, expressing some of the most absurd claims, as if they were the gospel truth. Even if someone expresses an opinion I disagree with, it should be within the real of possibility, a starting point to something constructive... And I congratulate you on your determination to continually improve your English skills.
