Malvinas Islands: “looking good for cruise ship season”...

    If memory serves me right...:
Season 2007/08 yielded some 60,000 visitors...
    Season 2010/11 some 50,000...
    Season 2013/14 just 39,500...

    “Looking good”...., for whom?

“52,000 passengers due to land with 86 calls to Stanley and a further 113 calls to various Camp landings as well.”

umm... the clue is in the first sentence, Thicko.

52,000 want to visit an island of 3,000. Kinda out strips your popularity ratings by a country mile.....
    ;)

I thought the Argentines were obsessed in visiting the Falklands, yet I see USA, Brazil, Europe, Asia...

99% of Argentines don't even give the islands a 2nd thought for a vacation. In fact if I said “I'm going to the Malvinas on vacation”, they would laugh their asses off.

Yet the Falklanders should be most interested in Argentines visiting, for their own sake. So that the enemy understands why they wish to remain British. But they don't encourage us to visit, in spite of the horrendous visit numbers from their closest neighbor. They simply don't know how to do long term geo-political strategy.

So according to your figures a recent decline has been reversed. Surely that is a good thing - for the islanders anyway? I think I'm beginning to understand why you think Axel is an economic genius.

    Nope....

According to the factual figures, the Malvinas cruise tourism decline of about 50% has been constant since 2008 until today...

The 2014/15 cruise ship season will start in about three months... ergo, the positive numbers mentioned in the article are no more than wishfull thinking...

I'm beginning to understand why you are such a prize Turnip.... You can't even read and comprehend a simple text written in your own language...

    @3 Mamarracho #2

“But they don't encourage us to visit, in spite of the horrendous visit numbers from their closest neighbour.” Kindly clarify who these “horrendous” people are? And while you are at it, who is “their closest neighbour”

And after all the abuse they receive from Argentine, especially from la Kretina and Timerman and other prominent people in that country, why should they welcome visitors from their 1982 illegal invaders anyway?

Actually Think not only can I read but I can count as well. According to the article, last year ~17% of the expected visitors failed to materialise, but assuming a similar drop-out rate this year then 43 thousand visitors should still arrive which is still up on last year. For a downward trend to continue at the same rate as before (since 2010/11) then fewer than 36,000 would need to arrive which would be an overestimation for this year of more than 30%. Anything better than that and the downward trend (by your numbers) has been reversed. Well I'm happy for them even if you aren't.

It's funny that Think posted those stats which show a positive result is very likely for the Falkland Island's which only shows what we already know, Argentina's ability to influence the affairs of other countries is non-existent.

In the face of the worst Argentina could do, the Falkland's islands continues to prosper.

Falkland's 3,000 citizens vs Argentina's 41 million and as ever the people of the Falkland's prosper and continue to win.

Cruise visitors tend to be wealthy, well educated and often retired. This is probably the reason for the low level of visits to the the Islanders by Argentine cruisers.

There are very few wealthy and well educated Argentines and the Argentine Government has done its best to impoverish its retired population in recent years. On top of this the very wealthiest Argentines would rather travel to Switzerland or wherever else they hide hide their ill gotten gains so that they can count their money. Safe I the knowledge that when the Peso goes down in value their savings will be in hard currency and knowing they have a rainy day fund if Argentina collapses as a country.

In addition the numbers tend to focus visiting tourists and ignores visiting Argentine government contractors who come to the Islands to surreptitiously film themselves dancing on war memorials who traditionally arrive by air.

@5 on Think in your wondrous wisdom and appetite for statistics that you use to to prove your points, a question.
How many cruise ships are visiting BA, Ushuaia, and other Patagonian ports.
Big increase on previous years no?
If so the tourists must be masochists and enjoy the harassment .
I won't get an honest answer to that I know.
    Think doesn't like uncomfortable statistics

On that basis Scotland should reclaim these islands of Tir nan Og at once

so +/- 40.000 visitors per year is “looking good” for the fatty officer..
even the estancia santa ana in coronel suárez receives more than that.
ok, it is 1000 times better than the islets, but anyway.
my honest advice is: give that officer a good kick in the ass.

@1 actually one of the main reasons for the recent decline in tourism was the pressure Argentina placed on cruise liners not to visit the Falklands. Yet another example of shameless bullying from our neighbors

cruise visitors are a joke, you nabos.
they are basically old & stingy.
the good thing for you islanders, is that they are not too exigent and that they will not remain in the islets for more than a pair of hours.
it is not safe to keep a bunch of old farts in a place where ct scanners and magnetic resonators do not exist.

@17 True, i have always been concerned that one of the oldies might go ahead and die on us. But im sure our medieval medical technique of applying leeches and praying would save the day.

@17 The profile of the Islanders has been raised thanks to CFK and the Comedy Club in BA. That's why visitors are so interested.

The more Argentina scweams and shwouts about the mythical malvinas, the higher the profile of The Falkland Islands rises.
Nice one Cristina, excellent work. Free publicity for the Falklands and nothing for Argentina.
    Yippee!

Paulecdron, FACTS - majority of cruise tourists are on ships spending 8-10 hours in Port FACT -Security Scanners are in use at the pier terminal. FACT- many are 25-45 yrs in high summer on the larger vessels. FACT- several thousand in total are actually Argentine tourists also.

Think- are you perhaps mixing theoretical totals if all ships 100% full and no ships prevented entering by high winds? Plus of course you did manage to divert a few ships in 2012/13 by politics I accept,
There was a peak a few yrs ago- then a decline partly due to the Bank Crash and also several big ships pulled out of S America in toto- due to excessive charging by Arg in particular but also Brazil and Chile.
Also with Stanley a lot depends on the weather- windy days on days of big ships due, means thousands less tourists some years just a few windy days - others -like 2 years ago - LOTS of windy days! Wind does not affect the smaller fellas so much.

    The Falkland Islands exist.
    They're British.
    People visit them.
    They have oil.

All the rest is just blah blah blah (in Spanish usually).

the big problem with all this, is that the islets cannot promote something they do not have.
i mean, to promote tourism you have to have natural attractions, cultural life, sport events, cosmopolitan cities, jungles, mountains, beaches, waterfalls, nice weather, etc.
well, the islets do not have any of that.

these officers should be prosecuted for scam.

Genuine question Paul, have you ever been to the Falklands?

Where have you seen the Falklands advertising jungles and cities? The rest we do have at least on occasion if not all of the time.

Paulecdron- Please can you answer us- WHEN are you ever going to write on here about something you know and is not utter ignorant rubbish?
Please Explain to me WHY is Tourism the 2nd biggest part of the Falklands economy and the fastest growing section of our Economy?
We have plenty of what Tourists interested in the topic like like to see:
Marine and Island Seabird Wildlife in its natural environment and unspoiled.
Landscape - open and unpolluted .
    Sea Trout Fishing
Safe Environment- no pickpockets, car theft, streets safe at night, etc.
Safe Political Environment - quite civilised western style democracy.
    etc etc.

Yes people would not come here for many Sport events- not surprisingly they don't go to Argentina either unless you are hosting an international event do they!
But even Argentines come here to take part in the world,s most southerly Internationally accredited Marathon each year!

Perhaps you might explain WHY do the major International cruise lines put the Falklands on their destination lists for cruises down this part of the world?

Come on - for once in your life - come up with a logical sensible explanation?

    benson & islander
it is just a bit of rant.
    don´t get mad.

now, the most southerly internationally accredited marathon is tha maratón del fin del mundo in ushuaia.

and about argentines going to the islands, it seems they will not be very welcome taking in account what you can read here.

Paulcedron- with a rant it pays to at least be factual - avoids being branded an idiot. Yes Arg tourists are quite welcome to visit the Islands - same as all other nationals.
Now if they act stupid and start waving the Arg flag about and strutting about the hills in 1982 combat uniforms - surprise! - That pisses us off and makes that minority lot very unpopular - and is one of the reasons why some now find it very difficult to hire a car etc here.
Last year one off a ship did try to unfurl a flag in town - his own shipmates very quickly put him right and told him t- *** stop it before any of us could intervene and politley tell him to do so and return to the ship - we did not need to - his fellow countrymen and women sorted him!
Another started a rant at the guide on a coach taking them to the Arg War Graves - he was well and truly shut-up by another tourist - an Arg 1982 veteran - who stood up and told him to shut-up and sit down or he would assist the guide in chucking him off the coach! He got a cheer from the other Argentines onboard - the offender was left silent as the others refused to speak to him for the rest of the tour.
