Tata group's Jaguar Land Rover established its first overseas manufacturing unit in China this week. The facility is the first joint venture between British auto maker Jaguar Land Rover and Chinese automotive company Chery Automobile Company Ltd.

The facility is spread across 400,000 square-meters and is located in the Changshu Economic Development Zone in the north of Shanghai. The construction of the unit is expected to complete in the next two years. The plant is a part of the company's £ 1.1 billion joint venture investment plan.

“The opening of this world-class facility is an important milestone for Jaguar Land Rover. Since its launch, one in five Range Rover Evoques have been sold in China. Our decision to manufacture the Range Rover Evoque in Changshu is a result of our commitment to bringing more Chinese vehicles to Chinese customers,” said Dr Ralf Speth, Chief Executive Officer of the British automaker.

Reiterating a similar sentiment, Mr Yin Tongyao, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Chery Automobile Company said, “Chery Jaguar Land Rover remains committed to delivering excellence in its quest to lead the Chinese premium automotive industry through its historic British lineage, world-class quality and unique shared value approach.”

The plant will have a capacity of 1,30,000 units per year and is expected to dole out three Jaguar Land Rover models by 2016. According to industry experts, the joint venture will boost the Chinese automotive market as the industry will open up to newer associations.

“The plant opening marks the completion of our start-up phase of which we are incredibly proud, and now we will continue to build with the same passion and pride, to realize our goal to be the premium automotive manufacturer inspiring excellence in China's automotive industry”, said Chris Bryant, President of Chery Jaguar Land Rover.

The company will also make investments in training of about 2,000 people in health and safety standards, process systems and problem-solving, as well as the company's quality-control processes and corporate culture. The sale of China-made Range Rover Evoque will begin by early next year.

The company through the plant aims to capture a larger share of the Chinese auto market. It will launch tailor made models specially designed for the Chinese consumers. The British auto major has sold over 100,000 vehicles in China, making it Jaguar Land Rover's single largest market.

I do hope that JLR don't have the Chery name anywhere near it.

Europcar Car Hire in MVD uses the small Chery and I was looking forward to driving one before we took delivery of our new VW. I must admit I thought the wife might like one, it was after all a pretty little car.

Within five minutes of leaving the airport I soon realised what a disappointment they were: no power, didn't drive in a straight line / weaved on corners. Checked it out next morning to find out all the wheel nuts were coming loose due to the machined angles being different to the wheel spring cones! What a basic error and why wasn’t it found before I drove it?

Then bits started coming off it to be placed in a cardboard box for when the car was returned. After a week I couldn’t stand it anymore when VW contacted us to collect our car. They very kindly agreed to take the car back for me and promptly put the thing on their delivery truck because after they found out all the problems they wouldn’t risk their driver.

TATA have gotten LRJ sorted after giving the management more or less free rein, something they never previously had. It would be a real pity for it to get worse again.
