How correct Videla was and how much did he fall short. The nightmare never ends.

I would rather vote Conqueror as the next president/dictator of Argentina than this guy.

Videla was a good man, his fault was that he was not able to get the 3 forces together, he was not Dictator fabric like Pinochet was.

This interview is pure gold, highly recomendable.

Magnus Master : All you have ever heard about the military dictatorship comes from the people currently in power , the very same people who were attempting through extreme violence to overthrow a legitimately elected government .
The very same people that tell you Britain started the Falklands War by sinking the Belgrano , or “allowing ” Davidoff to invade S Georgia .
The very same people who tell the Falklands are part of Argentina because birds from the mainland fly there or the other multitude of fabrications they concoct day by day .
If they are capable of monumental porkies over the Falklands , do you not THINK they are capable of the same monumental porkies over the so called Dirty War ?
They were a well funded , Cuban trained, terrorist army 15,000 strong , with about twice that number of supporters , planting bombs all over the country , holding mock trials and executing people , kidnapping and intimidating foreign businessmen , forcing them to leave the country and carrying out a lot of torture themselves , including that of an ex president who they then executed.
The dictatorship was a necessary evil , and most of the stories of torture are simply not true or extremely exaggerated . Most guerrillas that were arrested and captured spilt their guts and sold their own mothers before they even arrived at the detention centres .
Doorless flights and killings did occur , but nowhere near the numbers the current government claim , yet they have used as an excuse to purge the military and replace the vacuum with a “ People's Army ” ( called Vatayon Militante . Prisoners in jail are part of this army ( a sort of left wing South American Dirlewanger Brigade ) .
Argentina : Forget what is past , and start worrying about what's coming .

I've actually listened to Videla in a press conference in 1979 and what he says makes perfect sense to me, he wanted to reform the entire political structure of the country destroying the vices of peronism and statism

@5. We have a bunch of looney tunes called the European Court of Human Rights who want British prisoners to be able to vote. I see that the British news today has a report of a bunch of convicts setting off a bomb in a cell in a top security prison. Fortunately, no-one yet seems to have thought of starting political party. One wonders about the level of ineptitude and stupidity around. What will we get next? Prisoners blowing their way out of prison in order to walk around and canvass? I wonder about such a 'right'. are they not in prison because they ignored other people's rights? Where do they get the idea that they should have any 'rights' beyond being allowed to breathe? Democracy started around 508-507 BC. It was a human construct led by Cleisthenes. Nothing from “above”. Similar to the “human rights” that don't exist. There are NO human rights. There are some civic rights. Rights that a civic society bestows and can withdraw. I'm most often tempted to ask what “right to life” you have if you jump off a skyscraper? Does the pavement suddenly turn into a trampoline? Will these prisoners suddenly demand the 'right' to be shipped around all the prisons so that theyy can talk to their members? Prison should mean the suspension of most 'rights', otherwise where does it end? So, NO votes, NO political parties. Here's your bread, water and air. See you at the end of your sentence!

It is getting truly bizarre in Argentina. These “criminals” are probably no worse than what is currently running the country.

Videla's the guy who maintained it was perfectly OK to steal babies since their mothers deliberately got pregnant in the hope of avoiding torture and execution.

I'm sure he also wanted to reform the political structure of the country, god knows it needs it, but as moderate conservatives like myself like to remind ourselves, reforming zeal is in fact quite common among history's sick bastards, they're rarely in favour of the status quo.

@26 : It's a hard call . Should pregnant women throw bombs in the first place ? The military's reasoning ( right or wrong ) was that handing the babies back to their families simply created another generation of marxist terrorists ...ones with a grudge , too .
As it is , the military were proved absolutely right .The grandmothers of the plaza are nothing but a marxist front , and Hebe Bonafini's house was full of guns .At his trial , Astiz claimed his only regret was that he let her off because she denounced her two sons and begged for her life .
Yes , the military were evil , but so were the people they were up against , who are now in power . The military were jailed , the terrorists now rule and steal with impunity .

Pirate, that's not a hard call. Not in the slightest. It's the same logic Himmler put forward for gassing children along with their parents.

The other thing about Videla and co, and indeed their homologues elsewhere in Latin America, was how completely inept they were, at running a country, at running an economy, but also at their alleged profession. It's hardly a successful counter insurgency that sees you later in the jails of the insurgents, even if they do treat you a lot better than you would have treated them. And it's hardy a triumph making the Kirchners look good.

    Hamas

You are not conservative, you are a liberal lefty Brit, and you know nothing about Argentina and its history. You will never understand the Cold war in Argentina.

Even for a terrorist in his teens or in his college years why would you father or mother a child if you are not able to provide him with security, least to say for themselves??

The responsibility hence is on the parents side who knew damn well what they where doing... Why would have Videla given the babies back to lunatics like Hebe de Bonafini and Estela de Carlotto?? Old hags whom time and circumstances have proven what they truly are, terrorist loving & corrupt parasites of the State.

Videla (just as Pinochet was) was asked upon the bussines class, the political class and in fact large sections of the society to depose the useless wife of Peron and counter the terrorist advance.

The difference between the Argentine military dictatorship with the ones in Chile ruled by Pinochet or Paraguay by Stroessner, was that the Argentine armed forces where a three power triumvirate between the navy, army and air force. And Videla had no absolute power to get things done, while the others would just conspire against the president. But they all coincided in stopping the communist advance

@30. I'm not sure what other system they could have. It isn't democracy that's failed. When has argieland had democracy? What would you call a system where every 'voter' has to be psychoanalysed and certified first? But not by argies! They'd need to be psychoanalysed by trustworthy practitioners. Not that it would take long. What's the size of the electorate? What's the size of the rational electorate? It isn't democracy that's failed!

@33 : CD2 Is right . There are quite a lot of written records , acres of newsprint and newsfootage of the political class , business leaders , union leaders , the Church and the media literally pleading for a coup .
Congress actually dissolved itself in anticipation of the coup .
Ironically, the newspaper La Opinion was one of the leading voices calling for a coup .
The editor and proprietor ? None other than Jacobo Timmerman , father of the current foreign secretary !
A year later he changed his tune and was arrested and thrown out of the country after a lot of international pressure for his release .
His book and the film “ Prisoner without a name , cell without a number ” is , according to other political detainees , pure fiction .
He co-operated fully with the military and willingly denounced a lot of his own staff , who were arrested as a result .
All in all however , the level of terror that the left would have you believe occurred is in many cases fabricated or at least grossly exagerated .
Let's face it , they've got form ...Inflation in single figures ? Lies about the growth rate , lies about the Falklands , lies about Top Gear , lies about Cristina's and Nestor's past , pretending she is a qualified lawyer when she patently isn't , airbrushing their involvement with the military dictatorship and so on .
So why believe their version of events in the 70's ( ie unheard of levels of brutality ) ?

    @35

There's hardly any need to rely upon the word of the Kirchners to know what the NRP was all about, the perpetrators themselves had plenty to say.

Cabeza is right about another thing, though, the aim wasn't just to extinguish the ERP and the Montoneros, but to institute a particular social model, which would have involved the perpetuation of the oligarchy in the kind of stagnant, priest-ridden, authoritarian hegemony Franco had been strangling Spain with since the 1930s.

So when the dictatorship unleashed its perverts, the electrodes were out for anybody who might have objected to that, students, lawyers, journalists, trade unionists, guilty, innocent, ERP, Montonero or not. And according to Scilingo they did “worse things than the Nazis”.

It's a bit of stretch to believe that those who were prepared to support the coup at the outset for the purposes of restoring order expected or wanted what they actually got served up.

And look who won in the end.

But ignorant libtard, that social model that Franco implemented in Spain existed in Argentina since 1945 and it was called Peronism/colectivization/marxism/Statism !!!!!!!!!! And it was an utter failure, and Videla as well as the military wanted to get rid of it

Hamas you know nothing about economics, you know nothing about the social landscape of Argentina in the 60s and 70s and you are yapping the same lefty propaganda the Ks have being spouting abroad.

@16 They might have exaggerated a bit, but I don't think they flat out lied. Dictatorships are always messy.

@29 Trust me, it is not nearly as ludicrous as our current criminal code. Prisoners without a conviction (that is, sadly, most of them) can vote thanks to the legal principle of “innocent until proven guilty”. Those with a conviction cannot vote.

@37 : The processo came about for a number of reasons , Campora releasing all guerilla prisoners ( in their thousands ) who then simply went back to killing servicemen was the reason they chose to “dissappear” them post 1973 .
All the window dressing the left claims is rather fanciful .
I don't know where you live , but imagine 7/7 every day for two years with a crumbling economy on top in which inflation is about 1000% to boot , oh and shortages of every day goods , it might be cooking oil , cigarrettes , petrol , beef ( perish the thought ! ) .
At schools and universities , the “ normal ” teachers have been frightened away to be replaced with unqualified men with guns . There are gun battles and bombs going off hourly , like Beirut at the time .
Then you wake up one morning and there are tanks on the street , soldiers on every corner , law and order is restored , the universities are repainted white again rather than be festooned with graffitti and banners , there are no strikes , no bombs , inflation is gradually under control and Argentina wins the World Cup watched by everyone on colour television .
The bastards who started all the trouble were either shot or driven away and 34 million conservative with a small “ C” Argentines got their country back .
What wasn't there to like till 1980 ?
This government is the same people from the early 70's doing the same thing all over again , only they don't help the poor , they buy them off with handouts and free football , while they rob the country blind and drive it into oblivion , whilst at the same time telling them everything is Britain's fault or the hold out's fault .
