Forget staying in over priced Edinburgh and go to Glasgow. The shopping, music, theatres and art scene is better.

It's always a good idea to drop by underprivileged countries. Just to see how the poor live. Free this, free that. Because they can't afford it. Scotchland is a lot like argieland. It has a corrupt, nationalist 'government'. It gives stuff free to maintain its popularity. It claims things to which it has no rights. Best of all, it relies on others to do things it can't do.

@1. Glasgow has a 'folk area'. They call it 'The Gorbals'. Best known as a gritty and rough area. Much like Scotchland.

    Edinburgh's overrated in my opinion.

London on new years eve is far, far more spectacular

I see Paulies idiot cousin is holding forth again at #3.

Yes I do visit England on occasions. Some nice areas and people, others are dreadful and full of Conq. clones.

I agree with the sentiments at #7

    Apparently according to the news,
you will need a TICKET to enter parts of London for the fireworks,

Another government initiative to tax the people,.

    stay at home,
    warmer , cleaner , friendlier , happier,
Free tea / Coffee / sandwiches / a little music,
and no chance of being ripped of or mugged.

My father got his degree from Edinburgh University in the early 50's. He always spoke warmly of the place. Ian Rankin writes affectionately ( and wryly ) about the city as well. Those prices though...

@10 Yes, for the first time this year they are selling tickets for a place on the embankment to watch the fireworks. 100,000 tickets for £10, and why not? Last year 250,000 turned up and most has to be turned away. This is not another tax on the people, the fireworks have to be paid for every single year and until now it has been the people of London. This year some of the cost is being born by the people that want the prime positions by the river, a lot come from overseas and all over the country. Everyone who doesn't want to stand in the cold can watch it for free on T.V., or if they don't want to pay, in many of the open parks, trafalgar square etc., or, like me, a friends roof terrace (though I won't be this year). Last year after the ballet at the ROH it was an absolute scrum in London and we have decided to celebrate at home this year.

@11 I loved Edinburgh but don't know Glasgow well enough to comment.

Don't see England here, but again, with people like Conq. it couldn't get in the top 100.

As usual, conq. is living in the Victorian era where his vision of Empire and greatness lies.
