Iran’s charge d'affairs in Buenos Aires Ahmad Reza Kheirmand denied the existence of the “parallel diplomacy” denounced by deceased AMIA special prosecutor Alberto Nisman who accused the Kirchnerite administration of plotting to cover up the 1994 attack on the Jewish community centre.

“There is no kind of parallel diplomacy,” Kheirmand stated in an interview with Perfil newspaper. He also pointed out that Muslim community leader Alejandro ‘Yussuf’ Khalil, accused by Nisman of being involved in that plot, “has no authorization to negotiate.”

Kheirmand also rejected Nisman’s claims that the Memorandum of Understanding, signed in 2013 between Buenos Aires and Tehran for a joint probe on the AMIA bombing, was part of a deal to trade grains for Iranian oil.

He stressed that the Memorandum was a way for the two countries to “cooperate for the truth.”

“We have had diplomatic relations with Argentina for the past 110 years (…) When diplomacy works well, there is no need for parallel channels,” Kheirmand stated.
