The Conservative Government will never discuss the future of Gibraltar’s sovereignty against the wishes of its people, UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond told the House of Commons this week.

Mr. Hammond was responding to a question just a fortnight after his visit to Madrid, where he met his Spanish counterpart José Manuel García-Margallo.

“I am encouraged to hear that London and Madrid are talking about better relations over Gibraltar,” said Tory MP Henry Smith.

“I seek assurances from [Mr. Hammond], however, that there will never be any discussions over the future of Gibraltar’s sovereignty so long as the people of Gibraltar wish to remain loyal to this country.”

Mr. Hammond replied: “That is our position, and I confirm that it will remain our position so long as there is a Conservative Government.” The Foreign Secretary was echoing comments he made in Madrid after his meeting with García-Margallo.
