The postponement is a bit of a non- story.
It sounds like both sides are willing to do actual negotiations and resolve the issues as quickly as possible.

Fresh ideas and attitude, from a new law firm sounds like good idea.

    @1.

The rottingroadkillians will pay when they are absolutely compelled to and not a day before. They have to then secure the terms and then obtain legislative approval authorizing the settlement. Then they have to find someone stupid enough to finance the settlement with another tranche of bonds which will have to be coauthorized by separate legislative mandate and all this as commodity futures - the underpinning of any underwriting analysis - are falling through the floor.

Keep your mouth shut and people will be.less likely to perceive the extent of your Canuck ignorance.

My guess is that it will mostly be a down the road can kicking solution. The key issue will be Argentine recognition that the hold out debt carries seniority over the rescheduled debt. Then there will be a small cash payment because the hedgefunds have got to show their investors something. The remainder will be rescheduled over several years with perhaps some kind of accelator if the Argentine economy starts to improve. The Argentines should also negotiate the ability to pay some of the back interest on the rescheduled debt - enough to dissuade those debt holders from going to court to try to undo the deal with the hold outs. Of course, none of this is going to be easy for the Macri Government. There are bound to be accusations that they have sold out, just as there will be accusations of a Macri sell-out on the Falkland Islands following his meeting with Cameron. He is going to need to demonstrate that what ever deal he does with the hedge funds it has re-opened the doors to the international financial markets. To do that he could ask all lenders to come up with a small amount of new money. And that may well be the biggest test of his credibility to date.

  • Marti Llazo

Argento media today reporting that Macri's negotiations with the creditors are “not going well.” That is a coded way of saying “Argentina doesn't plan to offer to pay what is owed nor anything close to it.”

@5. I don't understand. Surely the hold-outs are capable of reading the argie announcements about its “reserves”. Anybody care whether argieland is broke? Pay the US$10 billion. Macri doesn't have much in the way of credibility so far. Didn't help trying to continue the Great Malvinas Lie. He should have you used his first weeks to tell argies the truth. For instance, the Kirchners have been lying and stealing for 12 years. The second Kirchner was twice as stupid as the first one. Argieland has been trying to impose itself on its neighbours, instead of living in harmony, because the government is scared. The Malvinas are really called the Falkland Islands and belong to Britain. Stand back and watch argie heads explode.

    Jan 22nd, 2016 - 05:04 pm - Link - Report abuse 0
  • Pontefractious

@7 All the creditors ultimately want to get paid. Sure the Argies have a lousy record, but Macri represents the best hope they have had in some time. So right now the best strategy is a bit of mutual back scratching that will improve prospects of payment down the road while at the same time helping to establish the credibility that Macri sorely needs. Whatever they do is not going to involve a lot of cash because, as you point out, there isn't any. Anything they do do in that regard is going to be smoke and mirrors. Then the creditors will have to sit back and wait and see if Macri has a) the ability and b) the wish to deliver. Hey, maybe he's no different to the rest of the trough-grovellers, but investors really only have the one choice.
As to the Falkland Islands, given the extent to which the Argentine population is brainwashed on this subject, Macri turning round and calling it like it really is would lead to massive erosion of support, which he cannot afford right now. So what he has done is identify a couple of targets eg getting the European Union to pressure the UK to enter into negotiations. Anyone with any sense knows that is never going to happen, so what he has cleverly done is taken the whole issue up a cul-de-sac from which hopefully it will never escape. As support for this analysis you will note that in reports of Macri's recent meeting with Cameron he is not quoted as having made a single statement or remark about the Falklands, something that would have been inconceivable under the previous regime. Macri wants to sideline the issue, just as he wants to sideline the debt issue, until he is in a better position to deal with it.

    Clueless rottingroadkillians.

    lol.

Singer already paid himself - both ways - by shorting the merval and driving it down and then reversing his position and driving it up.

    This is about more.

Now is the time to get a pound of flesh.

The hedgefunds know that the rottingroadkillians don't have and can't raise the cash.

News flash: Singer doesn't want what he's owed - he wants more, that's why Macaroni and Gay Pratt is spooked.

I'm curious what evidence there is of such an allegation. Even without the penalties, the amount lawfully owed is somewhere around US$9.88 billion. That's a lot of Gefilte fish.

How do you come to that conclusion ?

Where do you get your figures to support that in a two party system?

Obama was voted in by a majority twice - 2 terms, and regardless of NRA and Tea Party propaganda, there is public outcry against unrestricted gun ownership.

Polls??? - statistics are only as good as the questions - and who is asked. “Chronic” is a voice-Troll riding on your coat tails... but you are sucking up the adulation as he eggs you on.

I can approve of Captain Poppy over you, without being accountable for his every utterance. Not fair? Jealous? What (additional) childish insults are you going to send my way now?

    And they're both bullies.

Anyhoo, the USA is a center-right country. Always has been. Odumbo has moved more people into the right coulmn than we've seen in a long time with the vast majority of State Houses, Governors, US House and Senate being run with Republican Majorities.
He's done more moving people “right” than any Prez since Carter.
    Best thing he's done.
    Maybe the only good thing.

If Chronic is a Voice/Think/Marcos/Vestige persona at least it's one I occasionally agree with...the writing style is off to me though the other Think personas are pretty transparent. He can't hold them in line for long. Plus he's not smart.

You can stop trying to threaten me. I am not scared of you. I really don't care other than pointing out the fact that you have an anger management problem. You are so scary smart yet you are incapable of making an opposing point without calling others , gross, dump, so stupid it's scary, filthy looking....and, and, and it goes on.

I would call you Hitler, but no one is that evil. However, you have the same contempt to anyone who thinks different than you.

Why do you hate those who think different than you?

If you are as smart as your claims, make your point without insults. Though I believe you lack that intellectual capacity. And, Troy is correct, only your type would insult vets, like Donald and calling McCann a lose for bring a POW.

Don't know what “being Canadian” has to do with abhoring bullies - surely we should all feel that way, as individuals.

Looking objectively, I do not see ElaineB or Poppy as “bullies”, they are not.
They do seem to be bothered by your statements that lack compassion for the manipulated misguided dupes of Arg and Venzla.

US politics: Both Republicans and Democrats are more Right-wing than any of our politicians.

I think it's hard for Americans to see it from that perspective. One hopes for a strong America, but the vilification and rhetoric of opposing US parties is so destructive to mutual respect and unity, that it's depressing. I can't speak for Elaine and Poppy, but I suspect they feel the same way.

The vilification of the “other” whether it's the party, the 1%, the “fat cats on wall street” started during GW Bush's term by the Dems.
It got worse, much much worse, created Occupy this and that and the BLM under Odumbo.
He is divisive and violently opposed to working with “the others” it's his way or the hwy.

Hopefully the next Prez will change that.
This is not the USA I grew up in.
Frankly, I didn't even know people's politics and cared even less a decade ago.

As I've been saying for many years, Odumbo is Carter 2 when he's gone ( if he actually keeps his mouth shut after he's not Prez) things should get back to normal.
It is the reason people are tending to want a Non-Politician these days.

The USA has a great ability to course correct when we feel its necessary.
