John Prescott, who was deputy prime minister when Britain went to war with Iraq in 2003, says the invasion by UK and US forces was “illegal”. Writing in the Sunday Mirror, he said he would live with the “catastrophic decision” for the rest of his life.

Lord Prescott said he now agreed “with great sadness and anger” with former UN secretary general Kofi Annan that the war was illegal. At the time Mexico and Chile were non permanent members of the Security Council and refused to vote in support of the war despite “friendly calls” from the two coalition leaders which later turned into strong pressure and open warnings about “consequences”.

The ex deputy prime minister also praised Labor's Jeremy Corbyn for apologizing on the party's behalf.

Lord Prescott also said Prime Minister Tony Blair's statement that “I am with you, whatever” in a message to US President George W Bush before the invasion in March 2003, was “devastating”.

“A day doesn't go by when I don't think of the decision we made to go to war. Of the British troops who gave their lives or suffered injuries for their country. Of the 175,000 civilians who died from the Pandora's Box we opened by removing Saddam Hussein,” he went on.

Lord Prescott said he was “pleased Jeremy Corbyn has apologized on behalf of the Labour Party to the relatives of those who died and suffered injury”. He also expressed his own “fullest apology”, especially to the families of British personnel who died.

The former deputy PM said the Chilcot report had gone into great detail about what went wrong, but he wanted to identify “certain lessons we must learn”.

“My first concern was the way Tony Blair ran Cabinet. We were given too little paper documentation to make decisions,” he wrote.

No documentation was provided to justify Attorney-general Lord Goldsmith's opinion that action against Iraq was legal, he added.

The report by the UK's Iraq War inquiry ,chaired by Sir John Chilcot, was published last week. It said estimates of the threat posed by Iraqi weapons of mass destruction were presented with a certainty which was not justified.

British troops suffered from inadequate preparation and equipment and plans for the aftermath of the war were “wholly inadequate”, it concluded.

It also said the 2003 invasion was not the “last resort” action presented to MPs and the public, and there was no “imminent threat” from Saddam Hussein.

Mr. Blair apologized for any mistakes made but not the decision to go to war.

Am no Tony Blair supporter but “I am with you whatever” could mean a range of intended commitment from merely moral support to actual military involvement.
Prescott is just blowing with the wind as usual.

Indeed, blowing lots of wind, and if he feels so sad and angry about it, he should resign his peerage, afterall it was only bestowed on him because of his former position as Deputy Prime Minister. Let him be accountable and do the good thing - resign!

Prescott is a nothing trying to justify himself. Often called “Two Jags” because his corruption allowed him to own and run two Jaguar cars. Best known for banging his secretary on his office desk. He's always been ultra gabby.

Who decides whether a war is “illegal”? Where are the “rules” written? Anybody recall the part of the UN Charter that enshrines the freedom of action of sovereign states? How come there wasn't worldwide condemnation of argieland's “illegal” attack on the Falkland Islands? How come argieland got away with saying “It wasn't us”? Argieland has incredible double standards. It illegally invaded the Falkland Islands in 1832. It illegally installed a military garrison and tried to set up a penal colony on British territory. And yet, for some convoluted reason, it sees the British expulsion of those invaders as some sort of justification for a “claim” to sovereignty. It tried again in 1982. What a shame that Britain acted with restraint. Should have shelled Buenos Aires. Still, next time!
