Think, this is what's going to happen.

Macri will mention the Falklands, and the British will tell him that ONLY the Falkland Islanders have the right to determine their own future, in line with numerous UNGA resolutions and the UN charter, which Argentina conveniently forgets exist.

Then Macri will be told to 'foxtrot oscar' and the British will go and talk to someone who is actually important...like the janitor.

    I think he already has....

“Of course, our commitment to the rights of the Falkland Islanders is clear and will not change. We will continue to support them as they look to develop their economy.”

    Chuckle Chuckle....

PS...Meeting is only anticipated, nothing set in stone yet.

#4. Do you think that the 40 British companies in the delegation really care what a couple of thousand people in the Falklands think? They are there to do business - that is, to make money. What they will say is, “Sir Alan - this is your problem. Go and sort it out while we invest in Argentina.”

You are aware Think, that this is all for domestic consumption, and that any negotiations on specifics concerning the Islanders will require their attendance? Also that the oil offer on the table is based on the old cross border arrangement that Argentina abandoned and will involve the islands benefitting from oil on your side of the boundary?

“People sometimes ask me why Argentinians make such an endless fuss about the islands they call Las Malvinas. The answer is simple. The Falklands belong to Argentina. They just happen to have been seized, occupied, populated and defended by Britain. Because Argentina's claim is perfectly valid, its dispute with Britain will never go away”

“I am pleased we have agreed the Falkland Islands are free to set up flight connections with other countries in the region. A monthly stopover in Argentina will see a further arrangement similar to that which exists already.”

I can hear the gnashing of teeth from here :-)

    @7

The right to self determination is enshrined in the UN Charter, and numerous UNGA resolutions. The number of Falkland Islanders is irrelevant. Their rights will be protected.

But I can tell you what the UK population (65 million) care about...255 British servicemen who died to liberate the people of the Falklands from the Argentine Junta jackboot. They care about protecting the rights of the people of the Falklands.

I know you Argentinians think you can just sell out your principles for a few quick bucks, so therefore you believe that everyone else is the same, but that's not how it works in the UK.

These 40 businesses are there to see if they can do business in Argentina. If Argentina gets petulant then they can always take their business elsewhere. On the other hand Argentina is so, so, so very desperate for foreign investment.

In short and to make it simple for you...Argentina needs the UK for more than the UK needs Argentina.

So no the Falklands will NOT be discussed beyond the Argentine delegation being told yet again that there is NOTHING to discuss.

    @9 Marquitos Alejandrito

“Because Argentina's claim is perfectly valid, its dispute with Britain will never go away” So lies, fairy tiles, myths and totally mistaken interpretations of historical events make Argentina's claim ”perfectly valid”?

I DON'T THINK SO, NENE! Take your silly nonsense to the International Court of Justice.

”We're not going to leave aside our (Falklands/Malvinas) claim“ pointed out Macri ...

    A sovereignty claim without a case can only mean that the claim is w o r t h l e s s and illegitimate.

It is very important for the UK representatives to understand that Macri is not permanent, he has no backing in Congress, he could easily be followed by Cristina again or somebody just as bad or worse. This is because o the pain he has to inflict for Argentina to recover from the latest sacking of Argentina by the Peronists led by Cristina, this is very likely going to be the case.
UK must improve relations as much as possible but it should remember that when Macri has left, its borders with Argentina and its people on the Falklands will remain. UK must not do a deal which is not going to hold after Macri, it will only be a waste of time or even a danger to UK people and Royal Armed Forces. For example the agreements of Madrid have been forgotten.
Remember, Argentina is profoundly indoctrinating its young, so all Argentines are profoundly indoctrinated, Argentina has a tradition of not respecting international law. If Argentina implemented the Treaty of Arana Southern o 1850 and the Agreements of Madrid of 1990, there would be no problems in the South Atlantic to talk about.

FIG press conference 11am local time. Beginning to look as though the talking was done before Alan Duncan arrived in BA.

One more monthly flight to Argentina but the FIG are free to negotiate flights with any other country more often.

Sovereignty umbrella is reacknowledged by Argentina and the 1999 agreements reinstated (more or less).

Quite right Think - lots of gnashing :-)

@21. Thanks for the warning. But there's a “routine” here in Britain that can be amended as necessary. As in, Question “When can you tell that an argie is lying”? Answer “Its lips are moving”.

Go back to #12. See the reference to 255 British servicemen.

@7. Tell you what. “ Do you think that the 40 British companies in the delegation really care what a couple of thousand people in the Falklands think?” perhaps, perhaps not. Maybe one or more of the 255 British servicemen killed in the Falklands in '82 as they kicked the misbegotten argies out was a family member? Beyond that, 65 million people in Britain will “care” what business they do. The people of Britain can cripple or crucify any business. We aren't like argies. The words “honesty”, “responsibility”, “honour”, “commitment”, “integrity” will be strange to you. But Royal Navy destroyers, frigates and submarines have sailed to the Falkland Islands every year since 1982. Combat aircraft have been upgraded. Support aircraft have been upgraded. Chinook helicopters have been refurbished and returned to the Islands. “Business” comes second.

    Daily Telegraph 15/09/2016

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/09/13/mauricio-macri-says-argentina-to-hold-high-level-talks-with-uk-o/

    Please note these remarks:-

“On Wednesday Andrew Rosindell, the Tory MP and secretary of the Falkland Islands All-Party Parliamentary Group, hit back at Mr Macri by saying sovereignty would not be on the table at the talks.

He told The Telegraph: “They can say what they want to talk about as much as they like, but there are going to be no discussions at all about sovereignty of the islands.

“There will only be discussions about bilateral relations between Britain, the Falkland Islands and Argentina.”

Think& Marcos- You two can never seem to accept reality can you? There was NO need for any Falklands representation in BA last week:
1.Sov was and is not an agenda issue as far as FI and UK are concer ned- therefore it will NOT be discussed - not even with Macri in new York whatever he may publicly hint.
    2. The Flight to and from Brazil has been under economic study in the Islands for at least 3 years. Clearly it need a “green light” from Arg not to pressurize Brazil & Uruguay(the normal enroute stop) nor any airline. As neither Brazil, uruguay nor an airline would risk a weekly flight if it got a big lot of diplomatic and economic interference from Arg- not economic sense.
To get that green light - clearly we- the Islands(not UK) needed to offer BA something. That “something” had been long disussed with London and agreed and the stop line agreed.
Arg decided it could benefit from UK support in G20 etc - so each side gave a bit - and gained a bit. We got what we wanted with no consequences that in anyway impinge on Sov or weaken our existence - indeed the opposite. So 3 weeks out of 4 the flight goes OUTSIDE Arg control - one week in 4 it enters Arg control and lands at BA south and then north - makes no odds to us as who wants to get on and off there anyway?
Maybe a few of your 1982 vets who live in that area and north can come that way to the Islands - but it will be a much more expensive flight than the one your Govt subsidises from RGL by LATAM.
So just accept Facts and Reality- any serious topics discussed -eg Fisheries - FI will be there(at one time before your past Presidents went dolally- FI and Arg Fisheries teams met bilaterally on their own!. Minor issues - we will arrange in advance with UK and leave the actual face to face bit to them.

It is the 21st century now- an bit hard on neothanderals I guess? Think I have probably not spelt that right so will stand corrected!
