The UK doesn't give a darn about self-determination.

If they did, they would be declaring Taiwan a republic today and setting up embassies with them. The UK doesn't because it doesn't care if the Taiwanese want or not to be part of China. They are scared of the Chinese.

With the exception of their war on Germany, the UK has never defeated any opponent of significance. Their entire empire was built fighting against hunter-gatherers, they never dared invade real countries, just went to far off islands and isolated continents whose people had not the benefit of the technology trade of 5000 years in Asia-Africa-Europe.

Taiwan self-determination? The UK just says “we don't care!”

    Off topic.

Your post regarding Taiwan and China has nothing to do with Britain, the glorious Falkland Islands, nor Argentina.

It does, why do the Falklanders need to “report back” to London? I thought they had total freedom, outside of military and geopolitical matters (which of course is a bit ironic to say you are living the “self-determination” dream, when you are dragged by a far off capital in and out of international treaties, organizations, and arrangements and you have no power whatsoever to do what is best for you).

The FIA is not a Government department, and so there was no “reporting back”. Just keeping friends informed.

What is an “Anglo country” fidelito?

  • Fidel_CasTroll

Anglo is a historically accepted racial category in Argentina, for anyone who is non-Argentine White of a nation where English is the predominant language. In those terms, it is similar to the Hispanic Race in the USA, but Anglo in Argentina is much older than Hispanic and has been used since at least the 1840s, maybe earlier.

During the immigration boom of the 19th and 20th centuries, the English, Welsh, Irish, Scots, and others that came were all under the category “Anglo-Argentines”.

Later the term was expanded in the 1930s and 1940s to include any person who is non-White Argentine of any former British colony, whose household has English as a heritage or first language.

    Simple.

So Anglos are people like Barack Obama, Bono of U2, the Falkland Islanders, Ken Jeong, Donald Trump, Wayne Rooney, Bob Marley, etc. Usually we include Haitians and Quebequois as Anglos, as well as those from the Guyanas and Suriname.

Indians are an open question, but probably most people would lean to a no.

I don't see where the racism is in that.

So if I tell an Japanese or Chinese they are Asian I am insulting them?

Or Kenyan, Nigerian they are African?

Or Egyptian or Moroccan they are Arab?

    I don't get it.

Wow, that's a lot of wrong for just a few comments.

Try going to India and saying the empire was built by fighting hunter-gatherers. Or go to China, or to France or nearly any other European country and say Britain has never defeated any opponent of significance.

And you're welcome to call Irishmen and Quebecois Anglos if you enjoy getting punched in the face. But why on earth do you include Haitians and people from Suriname and French Guiana? You do realise the later is actually part of France?

Actually never mind. Since you hate all foreigners, why don't you just start calling them all Anglos, including Chileans, Brazilians, and Bolivians?

Biological race as the basis for characterising a government? French-speaking Haitians and Québécois as 'anglo' ? What a curiously distorted and inconsistent 19th-century Weltanschauung these argies have. It is no wonder that they remain a pariah state. (No podemos olvidar que el país de las 'cabecitas negras' es el más racista del hemisperio).

Argentina: It is not just their technology that is anachronistic.

Don't you Anglos call Pele (african) a Latin?

Don't you Anglos call Evo Morales (Amerindian) a Latin?

Don't you Anglos call Giselle (Caucasian) a Latin?

Don't you Anglos call Alberto Fujimori (Asian) a Latin?

I don't get it, why is Latin valid but Anglo invalid?

And what is the big deal, have I or anyone here cried foul over the term “Latin America”?

    OFF TOPIC

Your bigotry is made very apparent as you try to classify people into races and ethnicities for your convenience and the purpose of identifying a group for persecution and prejudicial remarks.

It's also quite irrelevant to anyone outside your circle of like-minded bigots.

Certainly, it is irrelevant to this article and subject.

    Back on topic:

Much praise to the Falkland Islanders for their qualities of industriousness and fortitude that have led to their economic success and ensured their values are not compromised or their freedoms threatened by the hostile aspirations of others.

    @TTT

I don't classify people like that. The truth is you hate anything that isn't exactly like you. Either you feel excluded from society or you are scared of it. I have told you many times that you are wasting your life glued to the computer in your parent's basement. It warps the reality. Life is great if you get out and embrace it.

What did you think of that pedophile ring uncovered in Mendoza? I remember you saying that didn't happen in Argentina, only in foreign countries.

    @fidelito

”Don't you Anglos call Pele (african) a Latin?” Don't you Anglos call Evo Morales (Amerindian) a Latin?“

A: from what I read in the English-language press, Pele is Brazilian and Evo is called Bolivian.

Let us invite fidelito to continue. His assertion that Haiti is ”anglo“ is not just splendid entertainment, but a fascinating insight into the state of education in Argentina.

And even though it's stupidly off-topic, let's remember that fidelito insisted that NGOs in Haiti and these other presumably ”anglo” countries are really really really all just government organisations.

I don't know if all those people get called Latinos. I think the term is more used in the USA for obvious reasons. Do you call Spanish people Latino too or is it only for Latin Americans?

And people are objecting mostly because of your overly broad definition; it's supposed to be English speakers, why are you including French people?

Also because neither of those terms describes a race, they are cultural and linguistic groups if anything.

    Dec 12th, 2016 - 08:52 pm - Link - Report abuse +5
  • Marti Llazo

Fidelito, Latin America is so named because the predominant official languages are Latinate/Romance languages, or in the case of Argentina, dialects of Spanish. In the earlier and arguably more correct use of the term, “latino” was generally intended to refer to those whose origin nations spoke Romance/Latinate languages. In the 19th century there were French movements (the French being “Latins” under the contemporary understanding) that attempted to unify Latinate/Romance language speakers and their respective nations under various flavours of pan-Latinism. To rule the world, of course. This, despite the evaporation of any semblance of competence on the part of the Romance language speakers and their nations by 1898.

And then along came Argentina's hero (and Perón's muse), Mussolini, who revived these 19th-century notions and tried to make pan-latinismo into a racial superiority gimmick. You still see evidence of the residue in modern Argentine culture.

    C'mon, “resilience” was Think/voice's term.

I would suggest that on the part of the Argies, “endurance” or even better, “resignation” are far more appropriate words.

There's plenty on here that is mockable but I don't think that was one of those things. People in Argentina don't have much else to celebrate after all.

Though it does show again just how obsessed they are with the Falklands. Must be the brain washing.

    DT

No, I am not mocking them.

“Resilience” would imply that the Argies have successfully defied their adversaries or their own politicians who consistently betray them, and not been broken.

I would say that Think/voice is deliberately trying to give the wrong impression.

“Endurance” is more accurate - they live through it, powerlessly absorbing all the abuse aimed their way.

“Resignation” on their part, is a tragically recurring theme.
They are resigned to their fate. We often hear that it doesn't matter who they vote for, they feel they'll still get screwed.

It's tragic, but let's not allow the likes of “Think/voice” to romanticize the trials visited upon these unfortunate people.

I will concede however, it IS with hope that they turfed the thieving harpy EVITA K and elected Macri, with a mandate to clean house of corruption, and initiate a competent economic plan.

    Good luck to them.

It's ironic that Think/voice from ??? and Enrique from Canada would be delighted to see their prophecies of his economic failure, fulfilled.
