Litigation, Litigation, do these Yanks think of nothing else? Its getting that way here, if something goes wrong sue. All the skeletons are coming out of the closet now.If there is blame there is a claim, no wonder we pay so much in insurance.

I think many Americans are aware of how much you Brits resent American liberty. Because you are ruled by an oppressive state does not mean that Americans should be also.

And many Americans are aware of how much you Brits want to be American yourselves and resent the life circumstances that mandate that you cannot be so.

Hepatitis, what planet are you on? Are you still stuck in your 25 year time warp? Have you been taking illegal substances or are you just a regular cretin?

Lol @HepaTroll. “They hate our freedom!”

And since when is it impossible to become American? I know several people who have become US citizens and more who have gone to work there and could apply for citizenship if they wanted.

The Troll has exceeded her inane postings with this one. YOU probably want to be American---please leave the rest of us out of this one.

Envy your freedom ? Freedom to get shot by your out-of -control police ?

Freedom to be unable to have free medical treatment.?

Equal opportunity except if you are black !

In the U.S. we have some incredibly greedy lawyers. Into the stratosphere greed. Their ambition regarding the size of their wallet would be downright inspiring if it wasn't so putrid.

If you had as bad an impression of American carriers as I do and how they treat their customers like absolute cattle, you might be feeling a bit better about United Airlines being taken to the cleaners. The cost of which they will pass on to their customers by some ingenious trick or another.

Dr. Dao stands to gain at a minimum 10M dollars, maybe even 50M, and that is after the lawyer's cut.

But maybe he will start to think, “Wait a minute, some Brit might call me a sue crazy idiot. I better not take the 10 million”.

    Here's another hypothetical situation:

Mr. British Person stands to gain 10 million dollars. Make it pounds, your money is pounds, right?

But some Yank tells Mr. British Person, “If you take that money, you're a big horse's arse.”

Mr. British Person then thinks, “Gee, I really care about what that Yank thinks, I'm not going to take the 10 million pounds”.

    @Bushpilot
If he really stands to gain $50m or even $10m that is exactly the problem, since it's totally disproportionate to the injury.

The whole story is ridiculous; the airline should have offered enough compensation to get someone to leave voluntarily, and this guy should have left the plane when he was asked to by the police. I hope this doesn't make airlines afraid to use force to remove actually belligerent passengers in the future.

And as you say, the cost will just be passed on to the passengers, and if he does sue the city of Chicago it will be passed on to taxpayers. The threat of malpractice lawsuits is one of the reasons for the absurd and astronomical costs of medical care in the US; it's not really the corporations who suffer from these huge awards, it's all their other customers. That's not to say lawsuits are always a bad thing, since the threat of them forces corporations to take the safety of their customers seriously, but they seem to have got really out of hand in America.
