Do you have to live there to get the job ?

Why, do you fancy it? It's based in the Falklands, so I guess you'd have to move there if you wanted the job.

After I posted, I read the job description.

As I have said before in another post, I was seriously thinking of applying for the post of Customs and Excise Officer for the Falklands and S.Georgia when I was 19. Only young men would be accepted because of the rigour of the posting..Part of the time you were required to live in S,Georgia during the summer whaling season.

It seemed like a good adventure to a daft boy. I probably thought of myself as a Shackleton clone - hardly - the folly of youth !
In those days you were isolated...no way of getting out except by a long sea voyage and the posting was for 3 years.

I talked to someone who had done it and he said that the place stank of whale oil and penguin shit. Your only recreation was drink and playing cards.
That put me right off ! Application withdrawn. I believe that left only two applicants.

Anyway, I was waiting for the Fiji posting !

It would be pretty lonely stuck in South Georgia all summer, and definitely not the place to be if you enjoy parties and socialising like most 19 year olds. The bird watching must be pretty amazing though. Do you regret not going when you had the chance?

In a word....NO ! As I said, I was waiting for the Fiji posting which came up when I was 35 with kids at school, so that was too late.

I also turned down the Gilbert and Ellice Islands. I had read the book “A Pattern of Islands” but that was set in the late 19th century and times had changed.

The off putting details were that you had to take 1 year's supply of food, clothing and medication as the trading schooner only came every 6 months. If it missed the trip then it could be a year between supplies. If you took seriously ill, the nearest hospital was in Fiji...700 miles away.

Fair enough. That is pretty off putting. I wonder how many people live there? Whoever they are, you'd be stuck with them for 6 months, it could get pretty tense if they fell out.
