    The reason why Lula does not remove himself from the presidential race, despite the fact that he is as good as barred from it due to his conviction in the lower and the appellate courts, and which make him a 'ficha suja' (as per the “Lei da Ficha Limpa”) is because he wants to create as much instability as he can, politically, socially and economically, until he is finally forced to admit poublicly that he cannot run. And that is the a.hole who says he defends Brazil and its people..

    REF: “Meirelles to announce his presidential bid”:

    WHY NOT?

    Afterall, innumerable political parties of ill-repute are already spreading their wings by creating more numbers of political parties of doubtful reputation and effectively are:
    - admitting the convicted political crooks as members
    - protecting & promoting them as candidates
    - inventing laws to increase their immunity
    - Collor, Maluf [to name just a FEW], etc not only enjoy their titles but also the privileges which go with the titles

    IF FHC got himself elected based on the Plano Real, why not Meirelles based on getting (the PT's high) inflation rate under control again ?

    @JB:

    REF: “inflation rate under control”:

    If not highly likely; quite likely [even without much of a track-record] he does have a slim chance. The opposing candidates may not exactly mind if they believe that he'll “deliver the goods”. After all, they too benefit in a thriving economy by stealing even more without the population “feeling the pinch”!

    “Lula does not remove himself from the presidential race...because he wants to create as much instability as he can...”

    Wrong!

    Lula does have intention to run, win the election and become Brazil's next president. That is his compromise with the electors, who entrusted him in the past and are entrusting him again.

    As a result, it's not up to Lula to abandon the fight -- that would be a huge disappointment to the millions of electors who are waiting for nothing else but to cast a ballot with his name.

    No sir. It will be up to the members of the judiciary to assume the responsibility of depriving the electors of their preferred candidate -- someone they know well from his previous terms in office.

    That be the man.

    @EM
    IF “Lula does not remove himself...wants to create as much instability as he can...”

    Right !
    Lula's intentions can be whatever he wants them to be....but he can't run - unless the ”lei da Ficha Limpa” is abolished (despite being supported by the PT in 2010/11) - so it's unlikely he'll win anything, except a striped uniform.
    Lula carries on with his populist rhetoric, criticizing all the institutions, diividing society into 'us and them', and instigating the MST to create havoc - in the cities as well as the rural areas - as if he were an honourable and honest man ; he is a dirty, filthy 'petista', whose dream is to turn Brazil into another Venezuela.
    On the other hand, if he did run, he could well lose...that would be a huge delight for the millions who have had enough of the PT and corruption. His popularity has been greatly diminished in many regions (as seen by his 'tours' and 'caravans'), and is nothing like what it used to be.
    Reekie, the fact Lula has been deprived of the right to be a candidate, is simply because he himself forfeited that right when he headed the largest corruption scheme(s) Brazil has ever known....and you're right, people are starting to realize who Lula really is, “someone they know well from his previous terms in office”...
