    Argentine Patagonian provinces elect new governors

    Weretilneck had become governor of Río Negro in 2012 after Carlos Soria's assassination

    The Argentine Patagonian provinces of Río Negro and Neuquén have new governors-elect after Sunday's elections. Opposition candidate Rolando Figueroa brought Movimiento Popular Neuquino's rule to an end after four decades and former Río Negro Governor Alberto Weretilneck was elected back into office. Figueroa and Weretilneck currently hold seats on the federal Lower and Upper Houses respectively.

    The governor from the Argentine province of Rio Negro has decided to cross the line and join one of the leading opposition groups whose head is a strong presidential hopeful for October 2015. The move can be threatening to the government of President Cristina Fernandez if more disenchanted elected officials follow or their lawmakers also decide to cross the line and could jeopardize the government's majority in Congress.

    A senior lawmaker from the ruling coalition of Argentine President Cristina Kirchner said that the Peronist party in the province of Rio Negro “would stand by” Vice-Governor Alberto Weretilneck, scheduled to take office as provincial governor on Tuesday due to the death of former governor Carlos Soria.
